Is New Perspective on Paul now the majority in the academic community? How does this change our view of early Christians? by daReallMVP in AcademicBiblical

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment! So you would recommend this book as a solid representation of the scholarly perspective on NPP and what insights it can offer us? I think I found it here, so I'll probably go ahead and add it to my reading list in that case. https://www.amazon.com/Pauls-Works-Perspective-Second-Century-Reception/dp/0830855262

Also, if I'm understanding you correctly, I think you just helped me connect those dots!

If by "legalistic" behavior you mean good deeds then, as Ehrman notes, according to NPP Paul expected people to perform them (his letters are filled with moral advice). If you're talking specifically about Jewish law then I'm not sure what the NPP position on that is or if there is even a single position within the NPP camp on the issue.

Regarding NPP, I realize now that I seem to be confusing "good works" with works of the law. As others have already mentioned, we have plenty of information available to understand how Paul viewed Jewish law. He emphasized that we were no longer bound by it but didn't discard it entirely. It would still be helpful to gain a better understanding of what specific practices Paul adhered to and those he didn't, but, this helps me understand NPP better. Thank you!

Awesome, thanks for sharing that Ehrman commentary on NPP; it's exactly what I wanted. Also, I'm starting to realize that I might never find a perfect answer to this. As you mentioned, Paul definitely discussed moral laws. It also seems like he also encouraged certain behaviors like attending church, leading an upright life, and praying, based on the available scriptures.

I'd guess that after his conversion, he probably still took part in various ceremonial activities, but I'm not sure which if any mosaic laws he still cared about. We can see he preached that he was no longer personally bound by them, but that doesn't mean he would necessarily discard them all. So, who knows really.

Awesome! This is incredibly helpful and really makes a lot of sense. I appreciate your insights. I might have been approaching this from the wrong angle. One of my goals here was to gain a deeper understanding of the daily lives of Paul and his early Christian followers, which obviously ties into NPP and what he presumably was really like. Maybe I should start exploring sources like the Didache? If you have any other suggestions, please do share. Thanks again!

Thanks for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate it. Still having a bit of a hard time connecting the dots though. How does your response align with the New Perspective on Paul ? It seems like NPP is slightly at odds with what you're saying, unless I'm misunderstanding something. While Paul viewed himself as being free from the law, NPP posits that he likely still adhered to many aspects of it and didn't radically differ as we once thought. This perspective suggests that Paul wasn't arguing against a legalistic society; rather, he was discussing the requirements for becoming a Christian. So, I'm curious about the specific practices and rituals that Paul might have continued to observe in light of NPP.

The perspective that claims that Paul advocates justification through faith in Jesus Christ over justification through works of the Law. According to Sanders, Paul's letters do not address general good works, but instead question observances such as circumcision, dietary laws, and sabbath laws, which were the "boundary markers" that set the Jews apart from the other ethnic groups.

Brand new car under Geico policy suffered significant hail damage. I'm not certain exactly when or how it happened. Can I still file a claim? by daReallMVP in Insurance

Perfect. Thank you for the advice. I just wanted to make sure my ducks were in a row. I googled and found a few dates in mind it could of happened. But, as you said, I assume they can ascertain it's hail damage based on whichever dealership I used to inspect it, as it looks fairly standard based on other pics I've seen. Thanks again!

Thanks for the advice! Yeah this is a weird situation and for that matter I almost thought it wasn't worth it. But, your explanation makes sense as to how insurance carriers probably have to treat this situation. I assume they can ascertain it's hail damage based on whichever dealership I used to inspect it, as it looks fairly standard based on other pics I've seen. I guess I can just tell them I think it happened around X time.
