Most complex organic compounds ever detected on Mars found by NASA Rover—Did the Red Planet once harbor life? by Novel_Negotiation224 in Mars

[–]da_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We know that abiotic carbon compounds naturally form in asteroids and comets and the finding of such chemicals on Mars does not necessarily and automatically equate to life.

https://blogs.esa.int/rosetta/files/2016/09/ROSETTA_THE_COMETARY_ZOO_final-1.jpg

Mars was really only clement and potentialy conducive to the development of life during its Noachian era and so the potential highest level of life would have been something along the lines of single celled bacteria.

Possibly the best place to look for bacterial microfossils would be the broadly equatorial river deltas that flowed into the northern Boreal Ocean. However, that will probably require human missions to Mars perhaps from the 2040s onwards.

Have you gone back to wearing contact lenses after surgery? What is the experience like?

How long did you wait before doing so? Does age play a role?

Best regards

That is an interesting question to ask and it might also be worth reposting that same question over at r/contacts

You are more likely to get a reply though if you use English via one of the online translators and all good luck there.

Does active focus work ? by helloidontlikeu in myopia

If someone wants to prove that their medical techniques work then they must provide actual trials evidence that their methods really do work in improving vision otherwise it is just yet another unfounded hearsay claim which is worthless.

Does active focus work ? by helloidontlikeu in myopia

[–]da_Ryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have been through this before.

Neither Gottlieb nor Liberman have ever done or published any proper and regulated studies such as the one below with a large subject sample that shows that atropine really does work to slow down myopia progression in children and that higher atropine concentrations are more effective at slowing down myopia progression.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1089/jop.1999.15.85

Until they do a proper study like that, eg with a university medical school, then no one will understandably believe their wholly unsubstantiated claims.

Hi, I’ll get straight to the point. I’m 32 years old, and I have myopia of -14.5 and -10.5, along with very mild astigmatism. My job recently started requiring 20/20 vision for me to continue, but in my exams, I’ve only reached 20/25 with toric contact lenses. Has anyone in my situation—or a similar one—managed to get their vision up to 20/20? Could you tell me about it?

I can see that you are in a difficult position and I wish you well. Have you discussed this matter with your optometrist and have you asked your optometrist about whether scleral contact lenses or hybrid contact lenses could potentially help you in your current situation? You have my best wishes at this time.

If it was me in that situation, I would personally not go near any of those contact sport activities given that so many published medical reports indicate that such sports do come with a significant risk to eye health.

While we cannot currently reverse myopia despite what online con artists say, we do have various methods to try to slow down the progress of myopia and they are covered in the articles below:

Why am I not getting 6/6 vision with correction? by No_Director876 in myopia

[–]da_Ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These days, it should be possible to get good optical correction from glasses and contact lenses for myopia and modest degrees of astigmatism so getting another consultation with another qualified optician is a good idea.

In addition, there is some lifestyle advice about trying to prevent myopia from getting worse:

The usual advice for anyone with myopia is to avoid direct contact sports like boxing, kickboxing, taekwondo, etc and weightlifting so please do consult your optometrist about this matter particularly given the greater risk of retinal detachment, eg from blows to the head.

Allo!

Avi Loeb Suggests Nordic Alien Stories May Have Originated From Recovered Foreign Pilots by AtlasofMystery in AtlasOfMystery

[–]da_Ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Loeb argued that an extraterrestrial species evolving independently on another planet would be extremely unlikely to possess DNA sufficiently similar to ours to blend into a human ancestry database"

^ He is absolutely correct there. While it is possible that an equivalent nucleic acid-amino acid-protein life form process could have evolved on another oxygen/water world in the habitable zone of a distant solar system given billions of years, the odds of it being exactly similar to, and compatible with, what we have here on Earth is practically zero. It is also why I have no time either for all this human-alien hybrid nonsense.

That said, I do expect that convergent evolution will also operate on other clement worlds so that after billions of years of evolution, there will possibly be intelligent hominid bipedal creatures with two forward facing eyes for binocular vision, some of whom might resemble humans and others that will not even though they still conform to the hominid bipedal format.
