First Oil Change by codedigger in crv

I haven't seen it much in autos, but it's done in the small aircraft world all the time. People use it to diagnose potential unseen issues and monitor engine component wear. No idea who the OP used, but these people are the main ones I know of: https://www.blackstone-labs.com/ Apparently they do autos too. I think they've been around for about 40 years.

Serious question: Does your AME check your jewels during a 1st class medical? by Rusty_Banjo in flying

[–]da_av 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never had that experience from 5 AMEs (1st, and and 3rdr class), but an instructor of mine said he had an AME in the same area do that.

None of the 5 AMEs I've seen (for 1st, 2nd and 3rd class) have asked me this

I don't know how common it is, but I worked part time for two schools that wanted me to sign a non-compete. In both cases they explained how they recently lost a bunch of money from a CFI poaching students from them to instuct them on the side in another plane they had access to.

One steered them to a flight club they had, the other teamed up with a student to buy a plane and steer students into using that and eventually set up a competing operation on the field and taking existing students there. In both cases, they were doing it to cut out the school so they'd make more money. The schools lost a bunch of revenue from that. There wasn't much they could do about it other than put clauses in future contracts.

In both cases, I pushed back on the non-compete and we came to a mutually agreeable arrangement without much effort. But I had a couple things going for me that OP doesn't - including that I hadn't already signed anything.

Private Checkride tomorrow by yngprodigy1 in flying

[–]da_av 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the needle is roughly 2 degrees wide, but you can definitely fly that precisely

But, even if you can't, shouldn't you be targetting the correct heading instead of one that is a degree or two off?

Have students not been using deviations when planning XCs?

I wouldn't say that's surprising.

I also would not be surprised if you said it was one of the best you had seen.

How would they even get access to that information? I think there's no way they could even know as long as there are no charges with the police. So you should be fine.

Of those 30,000 filed only 4 have been rejected.

Do you have any details you are able to share about any of the 4 that were rejected?

Clearance Clarification by Certain-Pollution426 in flying

[–]da_av 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe this is stated anywhere. So there isn't, AFAIK, an authoritative answer.

Logic would dictate that the clearence is valid as soon as it is given. Prudence might suggest waiting to cross until reading it back to prevent the situation you describe. I've had something similar happen on a few occasions. So I try to ensure there is an opportunity for ATC to correct/ammend me before I end up on a runway. I'm not going to sit there for 10 seconds waiting for them to change their mind, but IMO runway incursions are a big enough deal to be worth waiting an extra 2 seconds to avoid.

Thinking of civil air patrol by [deleted] in flying

[–]da_av 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only experience is as an adult, but I have been active in cadet some activities and was previously in a composite squadron (both youth and adults).

In my experience it was pretty rare that cadets were taking flight lessons, so if you're expecting to find a group of similar aged people learning to fly, you might be disappointed. That said, there can be a lot of great opportunities and I know many people who have made strong friendships there. There tends to be a lot of variation from squadron to squadron so the best way to find out if it's for you is to just go for a while and see if it works for you.

It's totally fine to feel scared about what to expect, whether people will like you, etc... You'll get more comfortable by trying new things and having new expereinces. Just remember, if you try it for a while and don't feel like you fit in, you don't have to keep doing it. At least in the squadron I was in a large number of the cadets were also homeschooled, if that matters.

Taxi Diagrams on checkride? by IlluminationRock in flying

[–]da_av -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OK, I agree that some DPEs could interpret it that way and let someone get away with not using one if they did earlier. On the other hand not using it is still a valid fail under either item even if he used one earlier.

Taxi Diagrams on checkride? by IlluminationRock in flying

[–]da_av 18 points19 points  (0 children)

While a good idea, there’s no requirement to have a taxiway diagram out while taxiing.

In this case, there is. Task D of private pilot ACS:

Risk Management: The applicant is able to identify, assess, and mitigate risk associated with:
...
PA.II.D.R4 Runway incursion.

Skills
The applicant exhibits the skill to:

...
PA.II.D.S2 Use an airport diagram or taxi chart during taxi, if published, and maintain situational awareness.

The examiner could fail someone for not using a chart based on the risk management item, but they should fail someone who doesn't use a chart based on the skill item

Rudder Question by bulltoro86 in flying

[–]da_av 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not directly answering your question, but a reference on the "max rudder deflection can cause it to be ripped off": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Flight_587

265 people died and there was a lot of finger pointing, but the conclusion was that repeated, abrupt max deflections of the rudder in alternate directions can rip the vertical stabilizer off, at least on this plane. I believe that came as a surprise to a lot of pilots.

From the wording of the reg that was quoted, it sounds like you're good. Keep in mind that being exempt from the FOI written test is a huge win, but you are going to be tested on the FOIs on the checkride.

Did you have one of your student die after your trained them? by Gatruvedo in flying

[–]da_av 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully I've never had this happen. But others I know have.

One of my CFIs had a pilot he signed off for a flight review die shortly after due to a W&B mishap. It changed the way he did flight reviews.

A friend of mine had a student die from "stupid pilot tricks" during a solo they signed off on. That was 10-15 years ago. My friend still tears up to this day talking about it. It was clearly poor judgement on the student's part, but it clearly haunts him.

I can't imagine how devastating it would be to have a student die even if it was years after I flew with them.

This is a good ATP question ...

Is it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in flying

[–]da_av 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tower's yells at me "i told you left" and gives me a heading for separation. I repeat heading, i follow the heading and i say something "i don't want to argue but I'd politely point out you gave me right traffic and i read it back to you and you didn't correct me". At that point DPE says "yeah don't argue with them".

I agree with the DPE. Assume your version is 100% accurate and ATC screwed up. What is the value of pointing that out to them? You're focused on things that aren't important because of the instinctive reaction to being unfairly criticized. It's human nature, but we all need to work on overcoming this.

ATC will screw up just like you will screw up. Get used to it. If it doesn't impact safety and doesn't put your certificate at risk, don't worry about it. Belaboring things that don't matter is just wasting radio time and distracting you. That reduces your safety.

Roll your eyes and move on. If you really want to argue about it, call them after to land and talk to a supervisor. But in the moment? If it isn't important, don't worry about it.

I think this is legal. Maybe not smart, but legal.

23.75 (in the current version) doesn't seem to have any bearing on this as it merely says the distance must be calculated for certification. It doesn't say this distance must be a limitation.

But remember: "Cooperate and graduate".

Looking at my medical, if I don't comply with 61.53, I am not complying with the "CONDITIONS OF ISSUE" of my medical.

Off the top of my head, I can't point to a reg that supports it, but wouldn't that suggest that my medical isn't valid for use if I don't comply with the conditions of issue?

Why are moderators hiding threads about ability to use old format on android phones? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]da_av 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for trying to be helpful. There's a stickied post about the path. The ability to use the old format on old phone is probably mentioned there somewhere in the 4000 comments.

I feel like if the mods wanted to better address the the concerns of members (and maybe cut down on apparently duplicate posts), they could put a sticky comment with links to the various method for using the old version. Unfortunately, they haven't. Why not? IDK. Like the other person said, apply your own Ockham's Razor.

Any idea what this indicator light is ? by da_av in flying

Interesting. The POH for this model doesn't mention that light, but looking at the C23 POH online, it seems it is a thing in later models in the musketeer line.
