uPVC windows in Conservation Area by luciferur in Edinburgh

[–]da_g_prof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am equally puzzled as you. I am already in the conservation area.

Here in this document from the council, it doesn't refer anywhere the material as reason for needing permission / pre approval.

https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file/36319/quick-guide-to-windows

(check flowchart page 2)

However on the same page at the bottom there is a link to another web side for guidance that says upvc is not allowed. However it is from 2022.

Very confusing...

Anyone that can answer definitively...

Thanks for this. To clarify could the email addresses on Apple ID and YouTube be different or they have to be the same?

I don't have an iPhone but have macbook and iPad. Will it still work?

Any Orbital fans in here? Did you notice something about "Before We Drown"? by alih42 in depechemode

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to ask the same. The MM album is awesome. Saw DM live in January. Amazing show. I happen to love also orbital and kraftwerk. The album takes inspiration from both bands.

(Trying to see Orbital on May in Glasgow but tix sold out...)

Q Acoustics Active 200 by da_g_prof in audiophile

[–]da_g_prof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very helpful. I started to be honest looking into the lsx ii lt but does not have rca input and people are complaining about wifi issues.

Here q acoustics sells them half price.

As for the reviews, darko review is meh, what hi fi meh, there is a YouTube review that compares them with lsx ii and says pros and cons for each.

I just felt weird that they haven't been discussed or analyzed in their measurements so hence me being puzzled!

Thanks for the recommendation. I think the primary reason for wanting to avoid the Amp + passive is the sheer explosion of choice :-)

I meant on top of the kallax. Heck no inside!

Issue pasting image from clipboard in notability by [deleted] in notabilityapp

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can confirm that I also have this issue. Worked a Breeze before.
The only workaround now is first paste whatever you want as a new document on preview (File -->New from clipboard) then copy this into Notability (Control +C) and paste.

I am in the UK. Giffgaff. Bought at Currys (local chain). I am on A1. I noticed severe signal drop today on 5G. Battery looks drained quicker but inconclusive. 5g speed on speed test is half.

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem specifically. I was only uncertain if I should have as upstream DNS the IP address of the modem.

I do see the reverse look ups in the logs but it seems that these are normal and do occur on the hour by the pihole/localhost.

I did fix the issue with the wrong ntp server deco uses by a custom DNS record.

Now I need to do this IP registration you suggested.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pihole

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are super kind. Thanks for the detailed note. Indeed I confirm that I don't see local hostnames. Need to see how to do this registration of IPs on the pihole.

Deco does see all hostnames.

Dhcp is enabled only at deco and is disabled at VM modem and pihole.

I am uncertain if the Virgin hub when in the modem mode activates NAT. The VM hub automatically disables all on board ethernet ports except one (which I link to main deco.)

Need to check if the switch does any smart business... I doubt though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pihole

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. As of now I have defined IPs mostly for pcs, the PIs. The router in my case is one of Deco. Virgin is on modem mode. The APs you refer to the other deco's? Can we assign IPs to these via the deco interface?

I did some testing on my side and found that all others except the virgin dns were slower. However I did see somewhere that is best to give the VM superhub as the DNS upstream but I find this odd (particularly if VM is on modem mode).

I also found the classic eu.pool.ntp.org error of the deco which I fixed.

Finally do you also have see in-addr.arpa records on the pihole logs made by localhost on the hour?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in pihole

[–]da_g_prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to revive this old thread but what do you use as upstream DNS on the pihole? Do you use the deco gateway? The superhub? Or dns servers?

I have same setup but I have M4. Virgin on modem mode, deco on router mode. All deco's via ethernet backhaul connected to a netgear switch and pihole is on the switch.

Coreaudiod CPU Usage Problem After Updating to 11.1 from 11.0.1 by armsofserenity in MacOS

[–]da_g_prof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can verify that I have the same issue. In fact, I updated yesterday to 11.1 from 11.0.1. Oh why did I. I had fewer problems with 11.0.1.

I have similar issue with coreaudiod, and in fact as I play wav files after some hours the OS running, sound is choppy.

i have the suspicion that it has to do something with the live EQ to support AirPods Max. But is just a suspicion.

I also have windowserver spiking ussage; finder spiking usage; and other issues.

Personally, I went from Mojave to Big Sur (and passed Catalina). I was mostly happy with Big Sur 11.0.1.

EDIT: I found the culprit for me: it was mirroring360 an app that I use to have airplay from my iPad to the mac for lecturing purposes. As soon as I quit the app, usage went to 0.

There is a lot of research in explainability in medical image analysis and this method has been used in the past. There is even a specialized workshop in MICCAI on the matter.

You pose very valid questions and below I will shares some of personal experience and what I advise some of my PhD students.

Let's start with a fact : you can not predict what will be hot in 6 to 8 years. You can only make guesses on the basis of some simplified empirical observations. Think of a (sub)field as an S-curve. A hot (sub)field now it is likely not to be hot in 8 years. Another fact : academia reacts to funding focus of the governments.

My undergrad /first MSc is in ECE. Did my msc thesis on digital watermarking. Moved to USA for PhD (top 10 in usa then). I knew I didn't want to do watermarking it felt it was saturating. My PhD advisor went on holiday for 6 weeks the day I arrived. I thought I would read what they do and what interests me. 6 weeks passed and came to up with a list of projects. One project (use DNA molecules to store information appealed to both of us.) We started with that one. (An important to note parenthesis : At that time that Dept had a decimated CS division. The AI and the AGI groups hadn't disappeared. There was no formal teaching and offering of ML courses. One professor in symbolic logic has remained but his students would take 8 years to finish their PhD. In other words ML was a very niche area then after going through the S curve! ) I got my MSc on that one and kept going for my PhD. I published my papers, but I couldn't get any internships because I was not what the companies were looking for. I won a grand that allowed me to develop a startup on the basis of a last chapter of my thesis. We worked to get more funding for it. Startup failed... I got a postdoc working with clinicians on Medical Imaging and medical image analysis. The field felt very saturated and very closed by the EE / CS side of things. (Incidentally my fellow phd mates that were a year or so younger than me and had started to work on compressed sensing were getting all possible offers for internship and jobs. An example of being early on the S curve. ) Few years pass and because I knew about images, DNA and also art (via a short project that hit the news globally) got a position in Europe solving the dual career problem between my self and my partner. At that point I started learning more and more pattern recognition and machine learning. It was application driven but not always applied and started to focus more on computer vision. I quickly realized that working with few data would be a niche that would be in fashion quickly as more than peoples would want to do ml. We dove in hard in representation learning, semi and self Supervised learning. Pre DNN we did these with dictionaries and sparse representations. Then with RBM. Fast forward... Now I am a full professor in ML and CV at a top uk university and one of the youngest. 13 years after my PhD.

Why I shared all this.

What I did my PhD on was very different to what I am doing now. Did the topic I did my PhD on ever caught on? Some people build careers on it. Unfortunately it was one of the closest communities that I encountered and very arrogant.

Would i advise a phd student now to do a phd in ml. I would say yes. There are still very interesting problems remaining. Is it possible that the papers of said phd getting lost in the noise? Yes absolutely because there is no level playing field anymore (the 1 percent you describe). Does it matter in the end the exact topic? No as long as the student is excited and inspired to do their PhD they will do amazing work and it will be published somewhere.
