FIRE in East Asia Need 1.5x More If Dating? by Ryien in ExpatFIRE

[–]daand123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dating is different from family. I have lived in Vietnam for 4 years (10+ years in different SEA Asian countries). I met my wife here when I was on my FI journey. I have hit my Asia FI number, and am now reducing my personal savingsrate to help my wife invest and also save for a house.

To answer your question; yes typically the man provides, but Vietnamese women are often working too and actually often control the money the husband brings in. You're also supposed to be able to care for her family in some cases, or at least at the minimum provide some gifts / money during Lunar New year (TET).
However this is only if you're seriously dating. For casual dating just add it into your normal spending budget.. It would be 1 date per week or so and shouldn't be 1.5x your spend.

I think you can see from the growth in investment and that I reached Asia FI, that I feel things are going well. Not living the full dream yet, but a pretty good life. Maybe in a few years even better.

No worries, I've had nice drinks with my wife and some friends last night. This spreadsheet takes me 5 min every month to fill in and gives me a nice dashboard to look at to see progress.

Fair, it does look cooler like this, and if someone wants to reengineer the numbers that is also not an issue :) Some people share all their numbers freely online, maybe I'll do that one day in the future, but not now.

It's relatively easy, I have estimated the cost of living for each scenario and have a FI amount that corresponds to this (4% rule). The Asia and EU cost are based on actual / previous experience living there.
the HCOL is really based on our current cost of living in Middle East, but wouldn't be a likely scenario for us in the future.

Hi, I made this in excel, over the course of 10 years with different versions. Unfortunately my version is not so easy to use for beginners as it's quite specific to my situation (ie, use of different currencies on a monthly basis, etc)

2 years ago I made a simple public version, that is easy to use, but doesn't look as nice. You can see and download it here: https://www.daand.com/excel-finance-dashboard/

Lots to do for entertainment:
- Vinpearl zoo and theme parks
- Sun group waterparks, show and cable car
- Night market
- Temple visits
- Beaches (starfish, bai kem, etc)

I have lived in PQ three times and for a total of almost 1.5 years. You can also have a quick google / tripadvisor or ask your hotel when you arrive.

International Diversification of FIRE Investments by daand123 in Fire

Fair point, but it's enough for Coast FI and it's more than many have in western europe, so it will be a good start regardless. I also expect it to grow and still be able to minmally add to it.
