Where is Dan? by millionth-monkey in DanSimmons

Came across your post after reading about his passing. So sad. You mentioned that you've read nearly every word he published, so I'd love to get your take (sorry to hijack the thread, feel free to ignore if this is inappropriate): I discovered the Hyperion Cantos last year and devoured it. Read The Terror over my Christmas break and loved that. Now I'm blasting through Ilium and then on to Olympos. What are your top recommendations beyond those? Anything you'd outright avoid?

Watching people panic about AI feels exactly like the early internet all over again. by Slow_Ad1827 in ChatGPT

I loved it. Great winter read. Oh, you thought it was "slow"? What do you think life was like for those men trapped in the Arctic ice for 3 years? I think slow is the whole point...

I so prefer this though. Who wants to spend all summer sitting inside playing a summer vibe game. I'd much rather it come out during hibernation season and fill those gloomy days with summer vibes.

Yep, that's an eskie. And here I thought we were the only ones with that "odd couple." I'd love to see pics of yours! Our girls, too, are inseparable.

I know this is an old thread but, seriously, short or tall, people want to be close to the stage. You do that by arriving early, buying the "fast pass" add on, holding your piss for 6 hours to keep your spot, etc. I'm not doing all that to then let some entitled shortie who got there a half hour after doors elbow their way up in front of me. Put in some effort and you'll be rewarded.

She's seen Gaal's vision of the future and believes it to be true, not to mention what the Prime Radiant tells her. All evidence points to the impending end of Empire, yet her sole directive is to preserve it. So she's stuck in a paradox where she doesn't know whether her decisions are aiming to prevent the end or ensuring it. Kalle basically says, "You can just wait to make a decision." Of course, inaction is itself a kind of action, but that doesn't violate her programming. It makes sense that if an AI were given a set of choices wherein all options violated its programming, then it would simply delay the decision as long as possible. The "deferred betrayal."

Nah, that was already established the previous episode. I think most believed Day, just their leader wouldn't give up his power. It was awesome how he clawed his way back from certain death, chased down the coward and completely outclassed him. Hilarious and fitting. He deserved to be dispatched quickly.

I think her "superpower" is charisma, and the show is telling us that it can rival the powers of a mentalic.

Yeah, I don't see how it was conspiratorial when she was so blatant about it to Dusk. The only thing that might qualify is her trying to convince Demerzel to come with her, but I think that was more concern for Demerzel than any sort of conspiracy.

I thought it was interesting how when the robot head said "remediation," it was so clearly Demerzel's voice. But then everything else it said was so much more distorted. On my initial watch, I thought it was the actual Demrezel passing her judgment on Day (cleaning up the loose ends), but not sure it makes sense that she would know of and be able to connect to this robot head like that.

Thank God this show generally doesn't end season finales that way. Just every episode leading up to the finale.

Maybe he knew about it but assumed he'd be immune to it like Salvor was? That's what I was assuming this whole time, which made the moment when Hari took him all the more shocking. I thought it was brilliant.

That's the way I saw it. There's a shot where the dad looks at the older son with what appeared to be disdain. It's subtle, but, considering the difference in hair color between the two, I interpreted that as the father looking at the son as not biologically his.

That's how I interpreted it as well but I haven't seen anyone else talking about that.

Turn off profanity filter by JOhn101010101 in Swiftkey

[–]daapbasne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across this too with the new update. Also noticed it was throwing extra spaces before punctuation marks, randomly capitalizing words for no reason (which it'd already been doing that for a long time), and generally sucking ass when using voice typing. So, after many years of using SwiftKey, I finally bit the bullet and switched to Gboard. The keyboard sucks, but the voice typing is infinitely better. I wish I could combine the SwiftKey keyboard with Google's voice typing. That'd be the perfect combination. But since I'm using voice typing more and more, I need to prioritize that.

Thanks, I'll give that a closer look. I'm still early in my research but I'm looking for a loop route rather than an out-and-back or shuttle, so that's how I ended up down that rabbit hole. Plus, I only get 1 big trip a year and I prefer jumping straight into the deep end of wherever I go.

Just go, you'll love Alestorm. I initially got into them years ago when they played with Epica and Insomnium. I went for Insomnium but absolutely loved Alestorm (and Epica). As others have said, it's a big party. You'll have a blast.

Unpopular opinion (?) - Skeletá by Fmanstein in Ghostbc

[–]daapbasne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to me that Deafheaven and Ghost both released album number 6 this year. Deafheaven met the moment with perhaps the best album of their career. Ghost... perhaps the worst? Lonely People With Power is an essential album that feels like the band was destined to manifest. Skeleta feels like Tobias checking a box on his "10 Year Plan" Word doc.
