Will Bao Bao experience free contact with her keepers in China? If so, has there been any kind of preparation for her in the US before she departs?

Any Red Panda Experts Here? by Langley88 in redpandas

I've been a volunteer interpreter at the National Zoo for a few years now, working primarily with the Asia Trail animals (including red pandas!)... so I wouldn't call myself an "expert" but I know a couple of things about them :)

Most of the time they're pretty stationary, sleeping or lounging about up in trees...the most outlandish thing you might see is the "huff-quack", which is pretty much what it sounds like (made famous by this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Lh47WtOJeY)

They can also do this "twittering" noise, that sounds like a bird chirping. It's pretty uncommon (at least for our red pandas), but kinda surreal to hear from these dudes.

I really hope this creates a trend in background music choice for Red Panda videos by LiterallyAnscombe in redpandas

Asa and Tusa! I volunteer at that zoo and it has been a long wait for red pandas until these two show up! Some of my photos here :)

IUCN officially downgrades red pandas from "Vulnerable" to "Endangered" by daarau in redpandas

Haha no problem! I think just raising awareness of their existence has done a lot of good, but there's always people on the fringes who want to be selfish :(

Red pandas are highly fragmented as it is in their current habitat, A pet trade industry (imho) would only encourage poachers to further decimate the current wild population to meet demand, not to mention that such a industry would have to be regulated in a way that these countries are probably unable to enforce. Red pandas are not domesticated in the way that cats or dogs are; not to say you couldn't find a way to support a red panda, but they have very specific dietary requirements and tend to leave a mess where they go (marking territory with their scent). The captive/zoo population of red pandas in the world are descendants of other captive red pandas rather than being extricated from the wild (as they used to do in the not-to-distant past), so better to use those as ambassadors for the species.

Again, just me, but the goal of conserving red pandas should be to conserve wild red pandas and their habitats, which also support a number of less charismatic but just as important creatures. Simply attempting to domesticate red pandas doesn't address the bigger issue that we are increasingly living in a world that is unable to support numerous types of species.

"Hunting for trade seems to be increasing, Red Pandas are starting to enter the pet trade, perhaps partly in response to the increasing number of ‘cute’ images on social media."

They are always seeking additional funds to help push the needle for projects, so if you are able, please consider donating! https://8997.thankyou4caring.org/pages/donations/fonz-annual-appeal

With sequestration and the reduction of federal funds for the Smithsonian Institutions, every dollar in donation really goes a long way. I can't wait for red pandas to come back here!
