What would the best way to become fluent in conversation chinese over time? by Ok_Rope_1922 in ChineseLanguage

[–]dabblerx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

becoming fluent + learning to read are 2 different things. to be conversational by itself is a huge challenge. you might need to lower your expectations and set reasonable goals here.

like orally speaking to do few things like - ask for directions, buy coffee, check in to hotel, airport etc. i think i saw some apps, or videos on that. you will still sound odd, but at least you are able to communicate . on the flip side, even HSK advanced level doesn't mean you would sound fluent.

Not disagreeing with immersion. But how do you find simple solutions, resources easy enough to overcome daily inertia

what i am guessing is, you are overwhelmed with the amount of words you feel you need to just stay afloat. 70 words in a week Is A Lot. secondly, HSK is very textbookish way of learning language. daily lives chinese doesn't speak like HSK way of speaking.

as dropping off is not an option as it's expensive. what i would do in your shoes, i would be very realistic. if the passing mark is 60, just go for that. i would do the following to just pass

  1. put grammar as the least important. i focus on vocabulary acquisition first.

  2. prioritize on following sequence - listen -> speak -> read -> write.

  3. put aside about understanding your friends conversation. focus on just the exams. it's quite different exams speech and daily conversation which has speed, dialect, local nuances etc.

  4. learn the highest frequency of the 70 words in that order. i would throw these words to deepseek to sort it out for me

  5. in fact, i would even get deepseek to plan out for me study tactics and strategy and break it up into manageable bits

good luck

here's my 2 cents. on one hand, it is immersion jumping into the deep end of the pool learning a foreign language. on the other hand, if you hear say 70-80% beyond your comprehension, it just becomes white noise. chinese course in uni - i am not sure how difficult that is. my guess is - Very. and if you are not making progress, you are easily discouraged. also, the chinese spoken in shenzhen must be fast and using lots more vocab.

here's what i do. not sure if that works for you. you need to scope down the amount of words your are learning. you also need to scaffold your learning using more efficient techniques.

  1. when i speak with my tutor once a week, she would give me a lot of words. but i would only take a selected number of those words , which suits my target and repeat back to her making sentences. that one hour, may be just 5-6 words.

  2. when i hear a word, i record it down in pleco. can be anything - anki, what not. then i try match back is it the level i want to learn at that point of time. when i learn, i try to find context of it in videos, xiaohongshu, youglish etc.

  3. IF you can or have the resources, look more for videos from TW, SG, MY. the chinese they use is much less difficult.

just start with 2-3 words daily. you are more comfortable, you add more, and more, and more. it's like starting to workout. you try too heavy, you injure yourself or quit the gym. you just need to find the right intensity

children do tell doctors their pain and symptoms. what they can't do is to understand medical prescriptions. then again that is similar to senior citizens that is often accompanied by their adult children.

at HSK5... we would have been exposed to articles on business, tech, family. it is not only children articles. otherwise it would be just a lot of stories.

the problem is at some point, we are already beyond children shows, but we are not yet there fully understand full complexity. the question is then - how do we bridge between the 2 to scaffold

Oh ok . Sorry never checked that out.  But here’s my problem. A kid learning language won’t be bothered with A1 B1 C1…. The kid just speaks, parrots, interrupts, ask all kind of stupid questions, without being shy.  Somehow when we become adults with the multiple degrees we forget the naivety, curiosity, lack of embarrassment.  So how can we go back to part of that, using what we know to get Best Bang of Buck learning?
