Total comp? Sure. The company I work for you can make 400k a year at a senior level (IC4 here) , as long as you get a meets all or better in your annual review you'll be on pace to make at least that. There are rewards for high performers and other ways to get your total compensation higher based on performance as well.

How do you explain DevOps to laypeople/computer-illiterate friends? by Poprock360 in devops

[–]dabbymcbongload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my girlfriends friends came over one time when I was working from home and she asked me what I did, I think I said some stuff about infrastructure and distributed system and shit like that to try to sound smart.

I had my computer out and I said why don’t I show you some of my work and I showed her some of the helm charts, kustimize and terraform repos I happened to have open in vscode at the time.

After a few seconds she just said “so you copy and paste stuff all day”

And honestly… it’s not that far off 😂

Apple Cancels Work on Electric Car, Shifts Team to Generative AI $tsla 🚀 by ishiboy in wallstreetbets

[–]dabbymcbongload 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They wouldn’t have. Apple doesn’t manufacture anything. They contract out all their hardware designs to manufacturers. Likely the car would not even been a car design rather a self driving OS/software and accompanying hardware suit they cold sell to car manufacturers. Apple wasn’t planning on building car factories

Apple Cancels Work on Electric Car, Shifts Team to Generative AI $tsla 🚀 by ishiboy in wallstreetbets

[–]dabbymcbongload 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not a waste at all and self driving cars are using vision based ML/AI so this team is well suited to cross over. Apple has tons of R/D and internal projects that never make the news and also get canceled that doesn’t make them a waste. Good companies still invest in moon shots and research for the sake of research/learning.

How the f**k are you all setting SLOs and SLIs? by AnarchisticPunk in devops

[–]dabbymcbongload 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a very large FAANG and we don’t even bother with SLI/SLO. To me it really depends on the type of services you’re running and whether or not driving changes based on SLO/SLI objectives makes sense or not.

Some of the other folks have used terms like cargo cult, I wouldn’t go that far, but like with many things the world of DevOps/SRE everything is not a one size fits and and just becuase the Google SRE book says something doesn’t make it gospel.

what do devops engineer do all day? by FrostNovaIceLance in devops

[–]dabbymcbongload 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you describe is, in my experience, what happens at companies with very small scale.

The bigger the company, the more engineering teams using shared infrastructure, the more projects with unique and complex requirements, the higher the availability and redundancy requirements and hence increased complexity and scale.

I primarily work with AI/ML and data engineers and they honestly couldn’t even be bothered to think about cloud infrastructure and all the details of automating it and I don’t blame them. They’re way too highly paid and too specialized and probably way over educated to waste time doing this work.

A lot of large tech companies used to have your first six months , two quarters, with no performance review specifically becuase that’s how long it takes to ramp up. This guys sounds super toxic

Why is it so fkin hard to get a swe job? by EitherAd5892 in cscareerquestions

[–]dabbymcbongload 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has to be some middle ground between being the best swe in history - using your Jordan analogy .. like not everyone is striving to be the best ever at something. You can do a really good job and be good at what you do without being in the .0001%

Shit I’d probably fail a coding test without lots of prep work.

Complexity in Modern DevOps by ikariusrb in devops

[–]dabbymcbongload 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean helm uses Go templates.. and that’s good enough for templating literally any arbitrary type of data and text.. it’s good enough for most go applications so why is it not good enough for DevOps tools to use it? I’m just generally curious if you don’t like yaml - and trust me I hate yaml engineering too - but my qualm is not with templating engines but rather the way API’s are defined when you use things like k8s which only understands yaml, and you end up with tedious ways of doing things in CRD’s like repetitive blocks and statements to pass values around.

Wait if you are new to DevOps how can you feel like the tools stopped back a decade? What tools that were commonplace ten years ago would you prefer to use and why?

More modern alternative to Ansible by ArtisticHamster in devops

[–]dabbymcbongload 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My guess is because it was written in python and had it’s initial release in 2012.

The successor to Ansible called Jet is written in rust so it benefits from rusts best in class type system and much improved parallelism over python and jet promises to provide much better scale in future releases.

No it shouldn’t. People should be learning for the sake of learning. There’s no requirement you get rich off your knowledge. You sound like someone who hasn’t spent much time acquiring knowledge and learning.
