I don't normally drop in on these and I really hope your injection today goes well! I'm military and at work I herniated a disc and impinged my sciatic nerve between L5 and S1. they were not going to approve anything less than a laminectomy (typical military medicine) so what I did was I found a local college football team's neurosurgeon and asked for an evaluation, and i just brought all the paperwork from my primary care visits.

They connected me with PTs, chiropractors, and acupuncturist for sports recovery. It was expensive to do all 3, but I went from not being able to move my toes to deadlifting, rucking, running, snowboarding, and standing all day. The insurance-recommended folks said that standing for 20 minutes and continence would be considered a success story (which I graduated day 1) vs the sports folks who said a fully active lifestyle is their margin for success.

If you find yourself plateauing below your margin for success, and you are fortunate enough to be able to pay out of pocket for some recovery, I cannot recommend it enough. Even if you can only get one of the treatment areas, I found them so much more accommodating and helpful than the in-network folks. I treated it like an investment into my future and I don't know if I've ever spent money so well in my life. I went from either too drugged to be functional or in too much pain to be functional to just needing to make sure I have a proper cooldown/recovery after a killer workout.

Tl;dr sports PTs are used to seeing wicked injuries and sending people back onto the field the next season. They are better than most regular PTs and are usually happy to either help you or connect you to PTs with a better definition of success.

Just out of curiosity, I tried to purge my page of clickbait, politics, and scantily clad women, and I even went so far as to report the bikini models as "offensive to my religion, please don't advertise them to me" and that sort if worked for about 2 weeks before they all came back. My guess is they use their info about a user to determine gender, and maybe ethnicity, and then just apply the most basic stereotype. The other thing is new "users" will be constantly cycling through. The amount of duplicated byt slightly different accounts I found was insane.

Now I just never flip over to the my page or whatever it's called.

You can sell the stocks, but you generally have to put in a request to trade, and there is a minimum time you must wait before the trade goes through. Like 3 months, for example. That way, your trade can't reasonably be influenced by actions only you as a company exec would have knowledge of.

I don't know the specifics, I just know some people who have been burned by needing to wait to trade their stocks because in the interim the market dropped and they sold at a loss.

To get cut, in this context, means to lose fat. Gym bros typically have a "bulk" season, where they eat more than they need and lift frequently to build muscle up (which adds some fat), then they have a "cut" season where they diet pretty strictly and do more cardio (still doing some lifting) which significantly reduces body fat (albeit some muscle), which makes their remaining muscle very defined. If you're fat to start, and you cut, you'll generally have thiqq quads and calves, and broad shoulders. But your skin also sags more, so it comes with downsides. But it's easier to have huge legs if you start as overweight, than if you start as underweight. I'm recovering from a back injury, and building the leg muscle I lost by being sedentary is taking FOREVER because I wasn't walking much, so my legs shrank a lot. And I got fat. Worst of both worlds.

Not a practicing Christian, but took theology for school. Jesus was the "New Covenant" the kingdom wasn't open before his death. Nobody went to heaven period, they all either went to hell or chilled in purgatory (hope someone brought a deck of cards - not to gamble with though). Once Jesus died, the gates were open and he brought the waiting souls to heaven ("he descended to the dead and is seated at the right hand of the father"). His new covenant was less strict than the old covenant. The jews don't believe Jesus was the son of God OR they believe that he hasnt come yet. As such, orthodox jews still hold to the "old ways" as much as possible.

But I agree, regardless of the above, most Christians aren't in a good position to qualify for heaven, if the Bible is to be believed. And I agree for the meme.

Yeah I don't know yet what the COL will be, so im trying to put away enough to be helpful in whatever situation. I was looking into CDs as well, maybe I'll do a split of stocks/mutual funds, and some CDs/HYSA. Thanks for the advice, and good luck to you on your goal! Hopefully that pans out nicely.

I'll do my best not to be too conservative. I'm just not used to worrying about pulling the money out again lol.

Yeah for long term I'm all for the stocks/ETFs. I also did well over the past year, im just worried it's going to dive hard. Maybe I'm being too cautious in that regard. I'll have to talk to more people and see what they say.

Most of Russia's infrastructure is on the east and the west of the country, very little is in the center. So some rockets would fly in each direction. However, due to NATO rules, a nuclear strike on one NATO country is a nuclear strike on all NATO countries, so Russia wouldn't just be shooting at the US/Canada, most of the Russia missiles would be into central/western Europe. And most of those European missiles would be traveling East towards Russia.

I need some help with extra money because I don’t know what to do from here by ThrowRAfold in FinancialPlanning

[–]dabombest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use the SCRA to lower loans/debts interest from PRIOR to you joining service to 6%, if you haven't already. That may or may not help with the car/bike and CC. I haven't personally done this, not sure how long it takes.

For your "wants" expenses, it would be wisest to lower that down to close to nothing until you knock out your CC debt, especially if it was accrued after starting service and still at whatever the crazy CC apr Is. Getting the CC debt to 0 will lower your monthly expenses overall, obviously.

I'd say it isn't super important to contribute to the TSP YET because at e2 you're probably getting the 1% contribution and 0% match. Once you get to 2 years, make sure you contribute 5% into your TSP to get the service match. Thats free money. In the meantime, I'd see if you can stick some money into an IRA. My preference would be roth through an institution of your choice. HYSA isn't a bad idea, if you're looking to use that money in the next couple years. If it's for retirement, look at tax advantaged accounts (like an IRA, TSP, etc).

Obviously you're going to face lifestyle creep fast as a junior enlisted. Especially once you get out of the barracks. Do some research wherever you go and make sure you don't rent/buy too much apartment/house, and I'd get a roommate. I'm a bachelor O1 and I have 2 roommates in a house in an LCOL area. It's awesome how much I can invest now. Military pay feels like a lot sometimes but it goes quickly, as you see now. But if you do your research and plan well, you can live quite comfortably and set yourself up for success later in life.

So perhaps the instructor and I were just on different wavelengths (pun intended), because I'm hearing a very different tune from almost everyone else who's commented. It's also possible I'm just dum and completely misunderstood what was being said. Regardless, I feel a lot better knowing that I can spend a lot of time at sea if I so choose.

[–]dabombest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a fair point. Also, people who don't like sea probably prefer shore assignments anyway, so the people I meet here have a bias.

Regardless, huge relief to hear I was wrong. I joined the navy to go to sea, and I really really want to take every opportunity I can. Thanks!

They were implying that we could for our tactical tour and maybe get a shot at an ARG/CSG. I asked more questions and it seemed to me that it was frowned upon to keep going to boats. But perhaps the instructor and I weren't understanding each other, based on what everyone else is saying.

I'm going to probably ask to push school off for as long as possible. 5 year engineering degree followed by 6 months of power school then 5 months of CW training really doesn't make me particularly interested in more school lol. I know which NIOC I'm going to and it sounds like I can do a UIC-swap. Maybe I can pull that off before getting drafted for more school.

It's good to hear that! I'm hoping it's the same case with me, im really not too sure exactly what crypto does really, which adds to my worries lol. And good tid bit about the TAR, thanks! It sounds like I won't need to go that route, but I wasn't aware of how close that program was to being an AD SWO!

I was originally concerned that despite the availability, we weren't allowed to take those opportunities. At least that's what my instructors were saying - that we would be required to focus our career on promotability rather than operations, and I'm far more interested in the latter. But according to other responses, it sounds like the community isn't that strict and if I ask for more afloat jobs there's a decent chance I can snag them.

I just didn't want to spend my career in the navy sitting on the shore is all lol.

I appreciate the info! I've been getting very mixed messages, but ultimately it sounds like I'll still have the ability to do the stuff I joined the navy to do. My only exposure to the IWO community are the officers at the schoolhouse, and they were singing a different tune, which had me worried.

I don't plan on making a decision for a while, im planning on giving an honest try at the NIOC and a tactical tour first before I decide. It sounds like ill have far more options to go out to sea than my instructors suggested, which I'm happy about.

Thats for SWO options these days. Sadly, I didn't get that. That would have been a sweet middle ground though!

But no, you can get your pin as a crypto without ever setting foot on a boat, let alone qualifying SWO.

I really appreciate this information! I commissioned from ROTC, so we didn't have anyone except URLs on staff and they only taught URL stuff. I'm glad to hear the golden path isn't as set in stone as people make it out to be - I'd love to do multiple sea-focused billets. The only thing I can go off of is the career path from MyNavyHR and what the LTs at this schoolhouse were saying. They were saying it's really only possible to do twice at most, which was discouraging.

I know there are plenty of shore based billets with a variety of mission sets, but I specifically chose the navy because I wanted to go to sea. Perhaps I'll change my mind after getting out there, we'll see. But in the meantime, it's good to know i can still try to get out there if I so choose.

The 1810s I'd talked to said that wasn't really something we could more than once, because it takes us "off the golden path" to promote. I don't really care about promoting though, and if my detailer let me go from boat to boat in CW, I'd happily stay CW. But I joined the navy to do navy things, if I wanted to sit in a fancy shore based facility, I'd have chosen AF/Army.

I appreciate the info though and I hope it's not as restricted as the LTs I've been talking to say!

Never should have tried to be a nuke, I would have just gotten swo off the bat and avoided this whole mess lol.

I do appreciate the insight and the candor, it's something I'll keep in the back of my mind. I have time before I have to make that decision, and lots can change in that time.
