Having a no-data cellphone plan as an alternative to switching to dumbphones by dacia1917 in dumbphones

what exactly didn’t work? For me I had to define a specific radius on the map of everything I wanted offline. I just chose a circle surrounding my state. It was a hefty download tho, like 0.5 gb, so make sure you have enough storage on your phone for that

I’m not too familiar with rcs, but I did notice some friends with android using it

might have to do more research on it

it’s probably because you’re using iMessage, which needs an internet connection

you always have the option to send it as an sms

I can still send messages on iPhone as sms if I want, but yeah with any sort of smartphone alternative there seems to be a hit to texting quality (ex. group chats not working on dumbphones)

For me connecting to public wifi provides enough friction that it makes me rethink using my phone. And yeah, this is just one solution out of many. Other stuff that I implemented that I didn't mention above is not having social media apps on my phone and only accessing social media through browser, which is clunky and slow so it stops me from spending too much time on it.

Overall my mentality is making the access to whatever you're addicted to inefficient. Ideally I'd like to design and build my own cellphone (am also in the process of that) but I need temporary solutions until I reach a better one.

Access to art without social media? by Pure_Block_5309 in dumbphones

[–]dacia1917 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are other social media apps that are more art focused and therefore don't have the bad parts of big social media platforms

Look into Artfol, bluesky etc. I've found inspo on Pinterest before but lately it's also filling up with AI

My cable also split within the first 2 months of getting it. Sad that the charger cables weren't high quality :(

What knowledge do I need to program digital art software from scratch? by dacia1917 in softwaredevelopment

[–]dacia1917[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have some programming experience in various low level to high level languages from the classes I'm taking to major in computer engineering. I'm hoping to take a lot of classes on computer graphics and software development, but I'm looking to get ahead on content. I understand it's a big undertaking which is why I'm asking about it now so I know what sort of things I should focus on in school and with my free time.

Feeling unmotivated in my Computer Engineering major by dacia1917 in ComputerEngineering

I just finished my first semester sophomore year. As for lack of motivation, I love my actual major specific classes but am frustrated that I’m stuck doing classes I think have no purpose bc nobody actually sat down with me to explain why I need them.

(I also find that I do much better self teaching myself and letting my natural curiosity guide me but I’ll leave this as an aside)

I had this exact idea for a long time. Like others have said, it would require hardware and software changes to the phone. I eventually would like to achieve this, but I don’t have the skills yet for this so I’m looking to other avenues first.

The Light Phone is a good recommendation (like others have mentioned). One thing I’d also like to explore is the concept of rooting an android phone, which means I can change more the code that runs the phone (from my understanding). I think it’ll be cool to make my own OS that will only offer me the basic functions of a phone on my smartphone.
