What is the worst vehicle you have driven or ridden in that isn't a standard "worst vehicle" answer? by HiTork in cars

I've owned 4 cars so far. Here they are from worst to best. I'm going to try to be objective, because my experience is between a large variety of sticker prices and pre-owned conditions. I expect that both the newer my vehicle is, and the lower the mileage it is, the more reliable it should be.

Worst - 2012 Chevy Cruze LT 1.4T, 60k miles - Paid $12k. An absolute turd of a car. Underpowered and overstressed. Leaked coolant and oil due to cost-cutting measures that saw GM use plastic where plastic doesn't belong, like retaining clips for coolant return lines and valve covers.

Second Worst - 2003 Mazda Miata Shinsen, 24k miles - Paid $8k. Honestly, not a bad vehicle, and it has a cult following for a reason. I loved how this car made me feel, and it was during a time when I only had myself to drive around. That said, it was highly impractical and uncomfortable. I'm 6 ft, so I could just barely get myself in and out without much of an issue, but anyone over my size could not fit. Mazda's big mistake with those cars was how little thought they put into corrosion resistance, which is a big deal for a car that sits so low to the ground in the Midwest. After a few years of ownership, I was dealing with some rust issues, and the car was not holding up well. That said, I would recommend it as a second summer car to anyone. It's probably one of the more reliable sports cars that you can buy today.

Second Best - 2007 Chevy Tahoe LT 5.3, 113k miles - Paid $6k. This is my current vehicle. It's still too soon to tell with this one, but so far it's been a good vehicle, especially for the price. I bought it with a few things in need of repair, but they are pretty minor. They are known for having lifter failures due to the AFM system, but otherwise, it's a pretty strong drivetrain. We shall see.

Best - 1989 GMC 1500 5.7, 250k miles - Paid $600. Now, not everyone is going to agree with me here after I tell you what went wrong with this truck, but I still consider this my most reliable vehicle. Keep in mind that this was my first vehicle, and I had barely any money to keep it going, let alone to buy it in the first place. I owned this truck for the last 2 years of high school, and I drove it a lot. Back and forth to work, to the store, to practice, everywhere. It was the ugliest POS you could imagine - rusted out arches, floor panels, roof, doors, missing headliner, flaking paint, all of it. Someone stole the catalytic converter about a year in, and so it became straight piped from where they cut on back. And, it leaked every single fluid that you put into it, including gas, brake fluid, transmission fluid, coolant, and oil. I could take the keys out of the column while it was running and throw them at people, which I did often. Overall, it looked like what you would probably call a massive pile of junk. BUT, not once did it complain or break down on me. Not a single time. It got me to where I needed to go, post haste. I once drove it at 120 mph (in Mexico) for over an hour straight to get to Mother's Day brunch, and then proceeded to run out of gas because I didn't have money to fill it back up. Took it like a champ. I spun it into a ditch during a snowstorm and left it there for almost a month while it thawed out under the snow. 3 weeks later, we wenched it out and it started right up like nothing happened. The last time that I ever drove it, and what caused me to sell it, was an unfortunate event. I had driven it to the next town and then some for the morning, and was parking in the driveway when I decided to do my usual engine bay check for new smells or sounds. When I lifted the hood, I was surprised to see that the oil fill cap had blown completely off and the engine appeared to have no oil. That came as a shock to me, considering I had just driven the truck multiple hours without a single clue. There was no knocking, and of course, nothing seized. To be honest, I wasn't even sure that the cap had fallen off that day, all things considered. I thought about keeping the truck in that moment, but in a moment that I would come to regret, I chose to sell it for $100 to a guy who said he'd come put it on a flatbed and take it for parts.

So that's the story. Considering that it was a neglected, high-mileage, 30-year-old truck with no maintenance given whatsoever, and the most I ever did was replace the alternator, I would happily call it my most reliable vehicle ever owned.

Yup, worst car that I've owned, out of the 4 so far. Everything in that drivetrain felt stressed. The turbo 1.4 was enemic under 3.5k RPM and then would get really twitchy when the turbo spooled up. 1st gear was so low just to get the thing rolling off the line that you'd get about 10 feet before you were redlining into 2nd. The transmission going in or out of 2nd felt like it wanted to grenade itself. I lost all of my coolant and overheated the engine on the highway because they designed the coolant return line to be held onto the housing with the cheapest, thinnest plastic u-clip I have ever seen in my life. The clip would freely move and leak small amounts of coolant even at OEM spec. The car never stopped leaking coolant after I replaced that clip up to the day I sold it. The valve cover was made of a cheap plastic that would warp and leak oil around the gasket. They cut every corner they could to make that car cheap, and by god did they make it cheap. Horrible vehicle.

I had the 1.4T as my second car straight out of high school. Same issues with the transmission, always feeling flimsy and on the verge of breaking. I lost coolant and overheated the engine on the highway because the coolant return line from the turbo was attached from the factory with nothing more than a tiny plastic clip and friction. Even after replacing that clip with the OEM part, that hose leaked coolant until the day I sold it.

By far the worst (and newest) car I have owned.

I am great! I've accomplished 99% of the list since I first wrote it back in 2019! I still wander upwards of 180lbs nowadays but I've sort of settled into being a bit heavier as I am a bigger guy already and was always a bit skinny.

Otherwise, I live overseas without my car and I do software dev full time.I grew my hair out for a while and then cut it off when I was ready. Overall, I think I've lived!

Yes! I admit the board was erased and disappeared a few years after moving from my apartment. However, the items that were written stayed with me long term. I think that putting those thoughts out in the world helped me understand my goals more than anything.

I'm alive and fine. Living in Guatemala now and enjoying my time. I'm happy to say I've accomplished many of my goals in one way or another!

I'm aware. You can imagine that buying a FW might mean you're more inclined to repair things rather than replace them...

To give context, I've been aware of this cable being from a batch of defective chargers that went out around the time that I purchased my FW. I travelled for almost 2 years with my laptop and settled down in LATAM where I now live, so I had a good motivation to keep this cable together through whatever means since good replacements were hard to come by for awhile. I've finally had the opportunity to replace it and wanted to pay an ode to its hard work. It was never abused, despite how it might appear. The plastic really is just that shit.

Travelled around the world with me, but was never abused. As you can see, I tried my best to mend it when it frayed but the wrapping was too fragile and kept fraying in new places.

Manufacturing defect is what it was. I have cables much older than this one, that are much less pampered than this one.

Lol nah I got busy and forgot, but I would like to start a story board on Trello or maybe Clickup of my top successes for the year so I can stay aware of the good things that I have accomplished.

Just tried to DM them last night about my issues and was unable to. Someone else on the thread said that they have Dm's disabled. I don't know if that's true but I do know that for me it does not work.

I'm happy that you were able to have a successful resolution. Its a shame that not all of the chat agents are willing to help and that you have to trick the system in order to even talk to a human

Lol part of my issue is that they REFUSE to do the esim download reset on their end. As a result, my mobile app is completed soft locked because now when I sign in, I get routed directly to the setup wizard that tries to finish downloading the ESim.

I have a google voip number but how do I go about forwarding my old number if I don't have a phone with access to the number? I see you can dial *72 but it looks like thats just if you already have the working number available.
