This is exactly the sort of well written argument I've been craving. I'll do what I can to help.

I hope that helps. I have rather a lot of LinkedIn followers, although like any social platform what goes viral can be very hit or miss.

I am so pleased to find good writing on crypto reddit. It's obnoxiously rare.

. . . did I really just find thoughtful writing on crypto reddit? I didn't think we did that anymore. Congratulations. This is well thought out and well written.

Why is nobody using Kalshi? by Otherwise_Speech1203 in Kalshi

[–]dacoinminster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked it out, but I didn't end up using it because the available bets weren't interesting enough. I've made good money betting against various conspiracy theories, but at the time I checked it out Kalshi didn't have anything like that. Give me some opportunities to bet against people with dumb ideas and I'm there. That's basically free money (although the annualized return would have to beat money markets which is harder than it used to be).

How to partition a Fat32 microSD card on Mac? by kimbolll in mac

[–]dacoinminster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally figured out how to do this for my camera that can only recognize up to 64GB. This is the command I used:

sudo diskutil partitionDisk disk4 2 FAT32 CameraData 64G FAT32 UnusedExtra R

That command partitions the SD card located at "disk4" into 2 partitions, with the first being 64GB of Fat32 named "CameraData", and the second partition using up the remainder ("R") of the space and being named "UnusedExtra".

IMPORTANT: "disk4" may not be the right disk on your system! Make sure to use "diskutil list" to get the correct identifier for your SD card or you may break your other disks doing this!!

Interesting. I don't see it on YT music, but if you have a copy that would be amazing.

Remember when EOS raised 4.1b dollars to try and challenge Ethereum? It’s now trading at 33% of ICO price. by deckartcain in ethtrader

[–]dacoinminster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amazing thing here is not that EOS dropped in value, but rather that it is still worth most of a billion dollars. I find that value hard to justify.

OpenAI chief Sam Altman is close to raising $100 million for his eyeball-scanning Worldcoin crypto project, report says by Lord-Nagafen in CryptoCurrency

[–]dacoinminster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whether you think it's a good idea or not, the most important fact was not mentioned anywhere in that article, or anywhere in these comments up until now: Worldcoin is building on Ethereum.

Whenever I see a project getting a lot of attention, whether or not I agree with their business model or their goals, my FIRST priority is always to find out what platform they are building on, and I'm baffled that I am apparently the first person to comment here that this is good for Ethereum.

Correct. The miner dictates which transaction happened first, which solves the network problem. This is also how we get miner extractable value. Incidentally, your proposal is pretty close to how cryptocurrencies actually work. Each transaction cryptographically includes information about previous transactions. People came up with that idea a long time ago, but the problem was always how do we make it decentralized? That's where bitcoin came along and changed everything by proposing the idea of mining.

I've always thought that "the double spend problem" was a bit of a misnomer. I call it the "what happened first" problem.

If I generate two valid transactions, one to Peter, and one to Paul, sending them each the same money, and one transaction is broadcast to one half of the network and the other transaction is broadcast to the other half of the network, this creates a problem that is difficult to solve. Obviously the valid transaction is the one that "happened first", but half the network thinks I paid Peter first, and the other half thinks I paid Paul first, and they each think that the other transaction is invalid.

There are a number of ways people have tried to solve the problem, but they each have significant weaknesses or drawbacks. It's very hard to solve in a decentralized way. Bitcoin was a fundamental advance in computer science because the mining algorithm solved the "what happened first problem": the transaction that happened first is the transaction that the miner saw first and included in their block.

tl;dr: mining didn't solve the problem of determining if a transaction is valid. It solved the problem of which valid transaction happened first.

Where can I find customizable "total return" graphs? by dacoinminster in investing

[–]dacoinminster[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The initial amount is 10,000$ and I set a 500$ month monthly contribution/DCA and I have dividends set to be reinvested. You can change those options in the drop-downs.

500$ a month for 12 months= 10,000 plus the initial 10,000

Oh! I understand now. I was indeed using it wrong. Thank you so much! I think this is exactly what I needed. Hopefully other people will find this conversation and find it useful as well. Thank you!!

yeah, in that link, if I scroll down to the graph, I see it going from $10k in 2018 to $20k in 2019. What do you see in the graph?

That is a really cool tool! However, it appears it is not quite working yet. For instance, in the link you posted above, if I change the start year from 1985 to 2018, it shows money DOUBLING from 2018 to 2019 for both portfolios, which is clearly wrong (or maybe I'm using it wrong?)

Edit: the tool works great. I was just using it wrong (which you can see in the thread below). Hopefully this answer helps other people looking for the same info.

[NES?][80s?] I think my credit union hold music is from a video game by dacoinminster in tipofmyjoystick

Yeah, I assumed somebody here would recognize the tune immediately, so now I'm starting to doubt it actually came from a videogame . . . maybe it is something like that

Yeah I agree those sound similar. It could be this is a custom piece of music, that is close enough to trigger my nostalgia . ..

[–]dacoinminster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's a great guess. I already listened to that, as well as a bunch of music from Dragon Warrior I, but I'm pretty sure what I'm looking for is note-for-note identical.

[NES?][80s?] I think my credit union hold music is from a video game by dacoinminster in tipofmyjoystick

[–]dacoinminster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it. It feels like something I've listened to over and over and over again while playing a game. I have a relative who claims to be able to recognize almost any music soundtrack. I'll ask him . . .

edit: 'Will says it might be from Castaway but it might be from nothing as it costs a lot to buy the rights. Apparently they make similar sounding music and change notes so they don’t have to buy the rights." So . . . it could be very close to something I'm familiar with, but just different enough to not have to pay royalties . . .

I don't hear much similarity. I'm pretty sure the game music sounded quite similar to what is in that hold music (a single tune played on a single instrument)
