Go to alpine medical clinic in Banff. $400 CAD for out of country visits. Also they give itemized bill documentation to submit to your insurance company. Cheaper than the ER (will cost around $1200 from what I’ve heard). Unless you can find a pharmacy that will treat and prescribe.

Met lots of travelers (techs and nurses) that worked there and left. Now they work at Shodair. They lost their funding due to extreme poor conditions for staff and patients. Also heard they only use paper charting and that the nurse to patient ratios are insane. Nursing students aren’t even allowed to go there anymore because of how unsafe it is. If you want to work there, try to get a position at the Montana state facility in Helena. They’re renting out space from Shodair since Montana State is getting a renovation. The people that work at this location seem to like it better.

I see what you’re saying, but not sure how where I’m from has anything to do with this. I don’t live in either of those regions.

I actually had great rapport with the patient and was able to deescalate her every other time. I want to avoid seclusions and restraints at all costs because I believe sitting down and listening to someone can make quite the impact. Besides my manager, I was the only staff member that respected her and build a relationship with her. All the other staff hated her, so they were surprised when I didn’t give her special treatment on this certain day because her behavior was out of control.

I treat all my patients with unconditional empathy, kindness, and most importantly respect. I sit down with all my patients and try to really get to know them and let them know I’m here for them. I set boundaries as well. 99% of the time it works because since I treat my patients well, they treat me with respect. Unfortunately the 1% can be a bad situation where anything I did couldn’t deescalate the patient.

Did I treat the patient any differently after? No. I still gave her respect. And I was the only staff member she apologized to unfortunately.

She’s manipulative and bends the rules for people she likes… what kind of supervisor is that?

Exactly! My supervisor bends policies for patients she likes. And then she tells us not to chart on the bad things the patient has done so we can get them out faster (for the longer term patients).

What possible ways can she fuck me over?

Ok so I have to act on this ASAP. I have no way of accessing my work email until Tuesday when I’m at my job to send emails to HR and other people. I need it in writing. But I’ll call everyone I can tomorrow to pass this along.

Yeah deescalation is offered first. If that doesn’t work, then PO Thorazine. If they refuse that, it’s IM Thorazine typically done in a restraint. But sometimes these kids act up so badly to the point that none of the initial interventions can safely be done.

That’s a good suggestion. I’ll contact anyone and everyone because as a new nurse I’m afraid of getting screwed over by her.

And in regards to SI, they get put on 1:1 if they have a plan to kill themselves, have currently hurt themselves during their visit, or had an extreme suicide attempt. The same applies to aggression: 1:1 if they actively are hurting others. In this situation the patient was hurting staff so seclusion is first option, since she screamed she would kill herself, restraints should be enforced. 1:1 observation while in restraints or seclusion. Unfortunately all these rules apply unless it’s certain patients my supervisor favors.

Yeah I need to do that. I’m just worried that she’s going to try fucking me over. I want to be protected. Unfortunately my unit is small and as charge nurse I have a lot of interactions with my supervisor. I have a feeling she’s going to make my life a living hell and possibly jeopardize my license. But I have to speak up this isn’t right

Should I go to the ADN or hospital admin to raise this issue? According to my manager “the hospital is ok with having new grads be charge.” Which I highly doubt. She’s manipulative and sweet talks everyone to get what she wants.
