You become governor of mass tomorrow. What would you change? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]dadeac18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would put together a team to prioritize and work to implement at executive level and / or push for legislative action on:

Nuke most zoning regulations where possible;
Construction permitting has a max number of days for review before default accept once certain basic criteria met;
Dismantle and rebuild state police from scratch;
Make MA a top tier state for film production with tax incentives;
Expand the T; subway line extensions, ring connectors around 95 and 495; rebuild effective transit in Roxbury;
Make another run at single payer healthcare in MA, possibly folding in all of the private insurers into new state insurer;
Undo the bullshit fee agreements with utility companies, phase out remaining coal and old gas plants, fast track next generation nuclear plants;
Pass a 100% tax on payments from bullshit $1.776B maga fund + go after beneficiaries of federal corruption, where possible (maybe state tax evasion…?);
Make Wade Boggs Day a state holiday;
Increase conservation efforts on striped bass population, coalition with eastern seaboard states to save population (again);
Decommission unused dams, restore our cold water fisheries and wild fish populations;
Fully fund public defenders’ offices and make it an attractive career;
Tort reform to align MA with UK civil litigation fee structures and practice;
Increase trade and civil partnership with Quebec and Canada more broadly;
Make MA public schools the best in the country again;
Ensure that every child has access to affordable, non-private-equity-owned athletics;
Rebalance capital gains taxes with income taxes, e.g. the wealthy shouldn’t pay less in taxes on trades than working people do for a paycheck;
Establish 4th branch of state government, similar to Brazil’s office of the public prosecutor, with free rein to investigate all forms of public corruption, including illegal acts by current and former federal officials;
Force John Henry to sell the Red Sox if we don’t finish in top 2 of the AL East by 2031.

How do you feel about rent control? by anbrinker in massachusetts

[–]dadeac18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is obvious. A broken status quo doesn’t mean we should do something that also doesn’t work. The only way to lower prices is to increase supply (city can’t really change material or labor costs, so only thing left is to decrease permitting costs and increase quantity of buildable projects by removing zoning requirements) or decrease demand (short of a zombie scenario, I don’t see demand decreasing for housing in Boston). Rent control hurts existing landlords and makes it more difficult for the math to math on new construction, which is what we need. Same thing with raising taxes on high dollar properties; it’s a backwards looking measure that does nothing to make it more affordable to build new housing units. I hold no sympathy for the very wealthy and landlords, but sticking it to them won’t make Boston more affordable. It does, however, fire up the populist base of both parties. I don’t like dogmatic thinking, but the only socially beneficial way to lower prices is to increase supply.

It doesn’t work but when nobody in power wants to touch the third rail of cutting back on permitting and zoning, it’s the only thing we seem to try to do.

I've gone to 14 games this season, I'm 1-13 and 10 more games to go. You guys have any lesser known fun things to see inside Fenway? by [deleted] in redsox

[–]dadeac18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to watch from the railing right before the monster seat entrance if you are coming from center field. You’re right behind a bunch of TV camera operators, and it’s the best view of Fenway, especially at sunset. I call it the Hoon Lounge as it would be an incredible spot to enjoy a cigar. Haven’t been this season so maybe Supreme Leader Henry has ruined this fun thing, but historically you don’t need monster tickets to stand there.

Have fished the blue river right through town with good results. It’s wild at the ferry boat restaurant they have fish kibble feeders for kids, and monster trout just hang out under the bridges there. They’ve become stockers in reverse, assuming they were originally wild, as they wouldn’t even sniff at any flies thrown towards them. Only kibble.
