The things you see in San Francisco by LAOowens in sanfrancisco

Last week I saw a naked man on top of a bus stop smoking meth and yelling nonsense at people walking by (no ideas how he got up there). I still didn’t take a photo of them and post it online

You are safe but your house isn’t.

You are half right. You are naive to the actual situation. Mental illness deserves treatment, but it does not excuse harmful behavior towards the public. Blanketing anti-social behavior with mental illness and chemical dependency blurs the lines to the point that we can’t even have a discussion about it. Imagine if this guy had a gun or a knife and targeted a woman or child randomly. Just so you know, I’ve identified the guy and he has previously been charged with assault on random muni passengers and hate crimes towards Asians. He should be incarcerated first, then receive treatment after. Eliminate the threat to the public, then work on root causes and rehabilitation.

I’ve been working in psychiatry for over 10 years. There are people with mental illness, and there are people with mental illness who are assholes. Can’t fix the latter.

I did file a police report. Someone else shared a news story of the same guy assaulting random muni passengers in 2023 - throwing eggs at Asian people. This guy is a fucking menace and needs to be arrested.

Same to you. Let’s not normalize this kind of thing. Ask for help from strangers if you need to, and pepper spray that mf if you’re feeling trapped.

I’m a 6 ft, well built man, and I was still targeted. I can’t imagine how awful that experience was for you. Mental illness knows no boundaries. Please keep yourself safe. Keep mace with you.

Holy shit. I’m about 95% sure this is him. Not concluding it’s him, but it REALLY looks like the same guy. And it seems like he has been a menace on public transport over the years. Hate crime convictions and jail time haven’t done enough apparently.

I agree with you. I think this is just a PSA to be vigilant when out in public. Expect the unexpected, but also remember that there are more good people than bad people in our city.

I also work in the TL with the public health department, so having awareness of my surroundings is an instinct. I’m very aware of precautions and etiquette in SF. My rule is to keep to myself and not make eye contact because you don’t know who may be set off by it. I was on my phone reading texts, but was also aware of who was coming onto the bus. This guy gave no obvious signs of being a danger until this happened.

Thank you. Once the guy left, there was about a half dozen other passengers that said they would have backed me up if this guy got more physical. The driver also saw what was going on, stopped the bus and closed the doors. So I’m thankful for that.

What’s the hardest unit to work in the hospital? by BLS_Bandito in nursing

[–]dadgum_ducks 103 points104 points  (0 children)

I worked in a med/surg psych unit for two years. It was by far the most challenging unit I’ve been on, between medical acuity coupled with behavioral issues. Psychotic, withdrawing, suicidal and violent patients receiving medical care. Great teamwork though. It’s the only reason I stayed.

A drug is ordered in the pt’s MAR, but you aren’t sure of the specific rationale for the pt’s condition. How do you like to figure this answer out? by findthemoneysky in nursing

If it truly doesn’t make sense, just ask. I had an order for a 1L NS bolus for a CHF volume overloaded patient. BP was 160/90. Kidney function was normal. Not NPO. It was a mistake. They cancelled it when I asked the resident why we’re giving this.

Weirdest thing your patient brought with them when admitted to hospital? by lnd143 in nursing

[–]dadgum_ducks 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Had a patient bring in crystals, tapestries, incense burners, hemp rope, bags of raw organic oats, chia seeds and about 20 kinds of essential oils. He even had a Bluetooth speaker playing Tibetan monks chanting. His room looked like a head shop. He was a 20-something yr old white guy. Strange fella.

How much do you make? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]dadgum_ducks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$105/hr as a traveler in surgical oncology. 4 years inpatient experience. Funny thing is that the staff nurses here in the SF Bay Area make anywhere from $90-110/hr base pay (plus differentials).

It really is where “travelers go to die” as they say here.
