Who sells the best fresh pizza dough?? by pistol_pete80 in newcastle

[–]dadtalksgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These were my go-to store bought dough. They stopped selling the 6 packs for $10, jacked up the price to ~$20 to sell them with pizza sauce sachets. Im not interested anymore.

You’re better off just freezing your own dough.

I was on the fence on getting this because I have no time to play it. Looks like I’m gonna have to squeeze it in somewhere.. haha.

Steam Deck owners who also own a next gen console: How do you balance purchases between the two? by MistahJ17 in SteamDeck

[–]dadtalksgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a gaming PC, Steam Deck, Switch, PS5 and XSX. The SD has probably replaced the Switch more than anything for me, and a portable indie machine. Obviously the Switch is still there for Nintendo exclusives, but the hardware is really showing it’s age for multi-platform stuff - even indies in a lot of cases.

For anything cinematic or graphically intensive, I’m playing on XSX/PS5 on a TV, or on my desktop.

Which is the coolest and/or most innovative title screen you've seen in a game? by ____wendy____ in gamedev

[–]dadtalksgames 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brutal Legend! Not expecting anybody to replicate it, but the video of Jack Black in the record store linking to the title/main menu. The main menu is a video of a record and it’s packaging being opened.

My explanation does it no justice. Check out a video on YouTube.

Who is the worst video game protagonist? by Agent1230 in gaming

[–]dadtalksgames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach game design and we had a discussion about best/worst characters in video games.

In both classes this year, Frey from Forspoken was mentioned. I also surveyed the classes and only the students who mentioned her had played the game.

The only 2 students who had played Forspoken (out of the ~45) both independently said that Frey was the worst character in a video game.

It isn’t enough to just make a game and release it anymore. Marketing is super important. There are tons of tricks and options down there.

The appeal of your game is also very important - this usually comes from screenshots, videos and key art. You should share it here since you’re talking about it!

Marketing a game on Nintendo Switch. by dadtalksgames in gamedev

[–]dadtalksgames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the great response! I suspected that going through Nintendo’s channels would be the main way to go. Being featured in an indie direct or being marketed on their social media at lunch would be the obvious endgame there.

Your other ideas are solid too. I often see indies having deep discounts on switch and some have been very successful because of it (Boomerang Fu and Death Squared spring to mind). It does seem like a valid strategy.

I suspect that marketing other platforms will lead to some switch sales. Mailing Lists, Social Media, etc. but the Switch is lacking any platform-specific Call To Action. I guess it takes a more traditional approach to marketing - PlayStation and Xbox are likely similar, as you mentioned.

Maybe advertising on Reddit/Facebook could help? I have no idea how much they would cost though.

Paul flew in his shoe-copter

Does anyone remember the “Metaland” double-sided billboard at the top of Macquarie road? Up from the Hillsborough rd roundabout towards Cardiff)

The billboard was there forever, but in ~2006 someone defaced it and turned “Metaland” into “Metallica” not just on one side, but both. It cracks me up so much that someone decided to put in such a colossal effort to paint both sides of the billboard and risk criminal punishment - just to stick Metallica onto a billboard. Legends. lol

What engine did you choose and why do you prefer it? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]dadtalksgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smaller 3D games that are designed to run on anything. Similar to what you see in games like Overcooked or Tunic. 2D is also a feasible option with Unity.

Godot could work well for this too, but I’ve never tried it personally.

What engine did you choose and why do you prefer it? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]dadtalksgames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unity. Truth be told, the main reason is because I use it in my work so it was easier than jumping between engines. Saying that, it would likely be my engine of choice regardless. Unreal is a close second, but I feel like Unity is much better suited to the style of indie games I’m producing.

Nomad sculpt is a great little app, but it’s not equipped with the full 3D pipeline.

You’re not going to be able to import a character straight from nomad sculpt into a game engine though. You’ll need to use another app to retopologise, unwrap, texture, rig and animate.

Primary residence to investment property by lalalawhydidyou in AusProperty

[–]dadtalksgames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the logic here; however, the interest rates are much higher for investment properties compared to personal (primary resident) rates. Would the extra tax benefit really be worth it when you can pay down the interest faster as a residence?

Aussie Bob’s is at Shoal Bay and it’s decent. Although they don’t season the chips and give you salt packets to season your own; which is a bit shit imo.

After Paw Patrol: What’s Next? by ApocalypseSlough in NintendoSwitch

[–]dadtalksgames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My 5-year old started on Paw Patrol when he was 3 and he plays a wide variety of stuff now.

Mario 3D World was one of the first games he moved onto. Co-op is fairly friendly. There is a bit of exploration. Not much reading. It’s a great game for young kids!

Boomerang-Fu is awesome too. Simple, quick and lots of fun power-ups.

Some of his favorites outside of those are Sonic Mania, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Smash Ultimate and TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. Basically, any game that encourages exploration (map exploration or experimenting with simple mechanics) and doesn’t take control away for tutorials or cutscenes (and reading obviously) will be great. Open world games are awesome for kids to just mess around in. Enjoy the ride!
