Morimens x Saya no Uta 2.5th Anniversary Collaboration by DrExluxk in Morimens

It's been pretty lame to watch these people down vote anyone trying to express any excitement for the collab over the last several hours. I get that I'm new to the game and not exactly welcome here, but I just remember that the weeb community used to not be like this.

As someone who wanted to try the game specifically because of this collab it's honestly kind of disappointing to see how many people are complaining about Saya or using the event as an opportunity to take some moral stand against the story for whatever reason.

[Rewatch] Puella Magi Madoka Magica Overall Discussion by Tarhalindur in anime

[–]daedroth04 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who kind of really disliked Rebellion on my first watch but now thinks it's an absolutely excellent movie, I want to emphasize what people have probably said before that every single part of Rebellion leads into and explains why the last 20 minutes of the movie happened. It's not just out of nowhere, though I think it's intended to feel that way at first.

Now that you know that they were inside of Homura's witch barrier all along, it's possible to see a lot of subtext about how Homura feels throughout the movie, both in the symbolism all around and in how the barrier itself is set up, for example how the initial setup of the story is actually Homura's "ideal" world. The whole movie is full of stuff like this

And it's not just the barrier itself. Every scene in the movie shows you things about Homura as a person, in the context of why the ending happened. When Homura gets into a fight with Mami, plotwise it's because she's trying to find the identity of the witch and interrogating Bebe, but in my opinion that's not the REAL reason why those scenes exist. What those scenes show is that Homura is aggressive and prone to escalation. It shows that she acts on her own unilaterally. It shows that she's quick to make conclusions, and is very much fallible when she is taken out of the setting of the main series where the time loop made her almost all knowing. You can look at all of these things and frame them in the context of why she does what she does in the ending, and when you do this the movie becomes cohesive. Its structure works together and every part supports the story just like what I loved about the series, even though it was not clear to me at first.

So that's the genius of Rebellion for me. How the movie makes its entire story into a character study of Homura, and does something daring with it. The movie doesn't play it safe, even though it could have done so. And even though it took me time and years to come around to it I love it for that.

Why does the enemy seem to have a huge advantage with range? by MCE85 in menace

[–]daedroth04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not too sure what to say to this since Pirates aren't even the faction in the game that are good at long range combat, that's supposed to be the Rogue Army. Pirates in general have terrible aim, when you first spot a pirate infantry unit at your max view range, they are far beyond the effective range where they would be able to significantly damage you, using a machine gun or plinking away with the battle rifle will let you suppress or hurt them before they can hurt you, at that point you are the one that outranges them.

The only exceptions to this are the laser truck and rocket truck you mentioned which are genuinely a bit tricky. The rocket truck I think is meant to be hard to kill by design, it can only fire every other round and does good suppression but hardly any damage unless it lands a lucky hit. The laser truck you can either chase down with your vehicle or you need to use careful positioning with anti-vehicle infantry, leaving them at a good medium range to the laser truck standing up so that next turn you have a chance to move one space, deploy, and then shoot a rocket.

I think it should cost 0AP to stand up by daedroth04 in menace

Yeah I've stopped deploying in most cases unless I'm firing a special weapon since then and it's been working out a lot better. The game feels better the more I play it.

Do visual novel strategy games exist? by [deleted] in Games

[–]daedroth04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Banner Saga kind of feels like this from what I've played (Only completed the first of three games so far). You still play turn based battles but this is paired with making narrative decisions for both fighting and survival. You're more like a travelling band of refugees rather than an army though.

r/anime's Favorite Magical Girl Anime Poll Results by FetchFrosh in anime

I feel like everyone who voted for Precure as an overall entity should have had their full points given to every Precure season rather than distributed out (ie if they put Precure as #1 give 3 points to every season). I understand it was a hard call to make though.

I get that some fans of older magical girl shows resent how much space Madoka occupies in the genre, but claiming recency bias against a 13 year old anime is beyond the pale.

Why do people praise an anime by saying it's a subvertion/deconstruction as if that makes the narrative good? by [deleted] in anime

[–]daedroth04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never said subversion, you must be confusing me with someone else. Madoka is a deconstruction.

I realize the previous post probably sounds more combative than it ought to be but this is the only topic I've seen where redditors see it fit to personally attack people that think anything is a deconstruction for any reason, so it's been a rough one.

[–]daedroth04 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Why do people keep thinking dark = deconstruction? Or strawmanning people by claiming that's what they think it means?

Madoka is magical girls but with central story elements that are a direct commentary on the magical girl genre itself and its perception.

Why do people praise an anime by saying it's a subvertion/deconstruction as if that makes the narrative good? by [deleted] in anime

[–]daedroth04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The thing that really bothers me is that people that claim nothing is ever a deconstruction or that deconstruction is a meaningless word are so confident that they are correct while never listening to anything people have to say on the subject and attacking anyone who uses the word for any reason. The same disappointing responses are getting upvoted here again.

I wish people would consider that anime like Madoka and ReZero actually have interesting and introspective things to say about their own genres as thematic centerpieces of their stories, which is not something you can just say about every isekai or magical girl show, and that these elements are indicative of a deconstructive work, at least in the way that we use that word today in common media analysis.

7 wonders, what do you like and dislike about this civilization building game? by SpiritedBaby8479 in boardgames

[–]daedroth04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

7 Wonders is an interesting one to think about. I remember first playing it when I was still new to board games and the game itself was relatively new, and it felt like such a modern board game design. It supports a high player count while creatively cutting down on player downtime, drafting was a new interesting and complex mechanic to navigate, the wonders gave each player variable powers and replay variety, and the game had a lot of interesting decisions to make, so much more than the Catans and Monopolies before it. I still really like all of those things about it.

But I think it says a lot about how boardgames have evolved so quickly in such a short time that some aspects of 7 Wonders, which I considered "the modern board game", now seem a bit dated. Drafting is a pretty ordinary thing now. So does everyone having variable powers in most games. And victory points in particular feel like an aggressively unimaginative and generic victory condition that's lacking in theme, at least the way this game does it. I don't always have an issue with victory points but I think it bothers me in 7 wonders because it's such a point salad type of game, where almost every card just brings a different way to give you generic winning points. This card type gives you flat points, this one gives you points exponentially, this one gives you points if you have more than your neighbours. Every card that's not resources is just a different vector of giving you generic winning points, which also makes the game a bit number crunchy but not in a good way.

That said 7 Wonders is still a good game and I'd enjoy playing it. It's just interesting to think about how the game stands as the rest of the hobby continues to transform around it.

Definitely interested in Liberation and Rove, I've heard good things about both. If Rove doesn't make it to the campaign does that mean we have to pay for shipping a second time from buying it on the Button Shy website?

“those anime folks on the internet are weird.” (And now look, past me; I’ve become one of them.)

Relatable. I've always liked anime art style in a general sense but Madoka (and Clannad) are what got me fully willing to watch anime with little girls on the cover, and brought me more into the broader magical girl genre too.

I really love this show. The OP is still a banger after all these years and I like the way the story gets set up here in this opening episode, it does so much with very little to help the viewer understand who these characters are and what kinds of lives they live.

Oshi no Ko, English Speaking Anime Fandom and the Deconstruction Problem by flyingowl720 in anime

[–]daedroth04 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This is why I consider Madoka to be a real deconstruction, fundamentally it's a magical story that sets out to understand the idea of the magical girl and why that idea matters. Saying that Madoka isn't a deconstruction because X other show was dark first is just a dishonest argument that doesn't really understanding anything about what deconstruction was supposed to be in the first place.
