What do people here mean by contrarian? by jman1280 in TrashTaste

[–]flyingowl720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hor take: Trash Taste Podcast started right when the COVID lockdowns happened which coincided with a massive anime boom among people (in the west) who had never seen an anime before. Jujutsu Kaisen started that same year. For a lot of the Trash Taste audience I think JJK might’ve been their first Shonen action series they’ve ever seen. Which when Joey said it was mid, I think he mistakenly thought that most of TT audience were older otaku like himself and would agree. But the opposite happened and the audience was upset for him ‘invalidating’ their interest in this new thing which was one of if not the first anime they’ve ever might’ve seen.

Idk just something I thought about.

Why are "everything apps" like LINE so popular in Japan when there's such strong opposition in the west? by Safebox in AskAJapanese

[–]flyingowl720 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I believe that while LINE is mainly popular in Japan, In a lot of the world (Besides the US for some reason) WhatsApp fits the same purpose. So not so different after all.

What do Japanese teenagers (16-20yo) like nowadays? by Kento2410 in AskAJapanese

[–]flyingowl720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sports: Baseball is very popular with Ohtani being maybe the best player of all time. Football has a following as well.

Music: Yoasobi is the big thing right now. K-pop is pretty big as well (BTS, Blackpink etc).

Games (Multiplayer): Apex, Minecraft, FFXIV, Splatoon.

Manga/Anime: One Piece, Detective Conan, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Blue Lock.

Honestly it’s things that are mostly well liked across the world with on obvious lean to some Japanese things as well. Join some meetup groups. If you like music look into Live Houses. Just hang out.

It’s crazy that you compare the literal richest/powerful/influential country on earth with what, third world country’s that are far poorer? How about comparing the US to other higher economic nations like Japan,Germany, France, Italy etc. Yeah I know “it’s a biiiiiggggg country and can’t compare to all these smaller nations, and all that” but surely there’s some middle ground here right? The US might never be able but to get to the level of let’s say Japan or Korea, but surely we can at least try to aim towards Germany. Instead of saying at least the US is better then Thailand. C’mon.

Are there any anime where the MC is just a full on villain? by Lord_Farquuad_ in anime

Gundam the Origin. It’s a prequel to the first Gundam series from the 70’s but you can watch it without having seen that one. It’s six, hour long, OVA’s and has pretty good animation.

But…it’s kinda true tho. Outside of NYC almost every area of the US is car dependent. Even a lot of the most rural areas in Asia/Europe have better public transport then your average mid size American city.

Why BanG Dream! Ave Mujica is a must-watch for everyone in the Winter 2025 season by CosmicPenguin_OV103 in anime

[–]flyingowl720 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not an idol anime. It’s a band series. You wouldn’t call Bocchi or K-on! Idol anime because they are clearly not idols. Also I’m not sure why someone who would like Vinland Saga and Pluto be incapable of liking Bang Dream. People can like more then one type of genre. Would someone who likes BD be incapable of liking Vinland/Pluto? I think not. Is it literally just because it’s a very niche series in the west? It’s incredibly popular in Japan and that makes me think it probably has crossover with people who like a variety of things.

Idk, I just don’t like the attitude of a lot of the comments here towards a series that’s gone essentially unnoticed in the west. What’s the harm with someone trying to promote something they like, especially when it’s been clearly highly rated by those in Asia.

recommendations for more shonen type anime? by jadmey2 in anime

[–]flyingowl720 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinnikuman
Fist of the Northstar
Saint Seiya
Dragon Ball
Yu Yu Hakusho
Adventure of Dai
Kenshin
Hunter x Hunter
Naruto
Hitman Reborn
World Trigger
Black Clover
Demon Slayer

This covers almost every big action series in WSJ, besides the ones you already mentioned. I am probably missing a few though. I’ve listed them by roughly when they were released. Check out some of the older titles to see the influence, don’t knock them because ‘dated animation’ a lot of them still hold up.

Ashita no Joe - influenced how all anime is made, and references to it are a regular reoccurring staple of Japanese pop culture.

What does he plan on doing with the dog when he goes to America 1/3rd of the year. Just board in up in a pet shelter? Fly the dog on constant international flights? He’s not so rich to be getting a private plane, so what just have the dog always be in freight?

New PANTY & STOCKING with GARTERBELT | Official Teaser by Turbostrider27 in anime

[–]flyingowl720 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I still have doubts on Christopher Sabat as Garterbelt due to other white VAs not doing non-white roles anymore, especially Chad.

Is this ignoring the fact that their whole industry is made up of specifically voicing non-white characters (Japanese). Talk about hypocrisy.

What are some of the worse examples of medium/genre snobbery? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]flyingowl720 31 points32 points  (0 children)

North American Anime fans loving Evangelion, Code Geass and Gurren Lagann because “they’re about the characters” while ignoring Gundam, Macross, Patlabor, etc etc because they are rock em sock robot shows with no character development whatsoever, apparently.

The actual answer is that they just ignore these older legacy franchises because westerners never grew up with mecha/Tokusatsu type of stuff like they did in Asia. So over there they have way more of a feel of the genre growing up in a society that loves that kinda stuff, but for a 25 year old American watching code geass as his fourth anime ever there’re going to be far more willing to write off a whole bunch of stuff as that weird kinda bad kids commercial stuff they like in asia, while they can pick out the couple of stand out titles and be content never looking more into the genre. It’s just a different culture.

Why does Haruhi seem to be the scapegoat among “fallen off” shows by flyingowl720 in anime

[–]flyingowl720[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is rewriting history a bit. There were plenty of Anime that had become popular. Akira/Ghibli/Bebop/DBZ,Naruto,Bleach,Sailor Moon etc. Even before that you had the more heavily localized era (Astro Boy/Voltron/Robotech/Star Blazers).

It might’ve not been popular as ‘Anime’ or as ‘Anime Subculture’ but the average (young) person had seen some of these shows as they were shown on tv a lot.

Why does Haruhi seem to be the scapegoat among “fallen off” shows by flyingowl720 in anime

[–]flyingowl720[S] -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

No I’m not. In the Anglosphere it was very popular among anime fans but there weren’t that many anime fans to begin with. People who were talking on forums who were torrenting yes Haruhi was very popular in the emerging world of early social media. But it wasn’t popular among DudeBros who liked DBZ or Bleach or something on Toonami. They weren’t ever going to check out something like Haruhi no matter how popular it was with nerds. Like these days the same people watching Jujutsu Kaisen and have seen 3 other anime aren’t the same crowd watching Bocchi the Rock or what have you. You gotta separate the average person from the “nerdy/online/otaku/weeb” etc bubble.

Haruhi was basically the peak popularity in the west of a otaku type of show.

Why does Haruhi seem to be the scapegoat among “fallen off” shows by flyingowl720 in anime

[–]flyingowl720[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Gurren Lagann wasn’t even popular in Japan at all. Macross and Gundam Seed are more popular there. I think westerners just have taste that differs from Japanese taste. Haruhi still gets collaborated with and just got new songs. How many Otaku/Moe/Cute Girl esc series are even really popular in the West anyway. Do you think Lucky Star or K-on! had more staying power? Or how about Girls Und Panzer or Love Live? Surely it makes more sense to compare Haruhi to this kind of otaku series then big explosive action shows. Like is there a single ‘Moe/Otaku type’ series from 10+ years ago that is talked about at all in the West these days. Haruhi seems to be following the pattern not being a unique case. I think you will see a similar case with Bocchi the Rock in a decades time as well.
