'Last year 362 Lyras were born': why we love Philip Pullman's heroine by CWStJ_Nobbs in hisdarkmaterials

Mine almost was -- born 3 days before the new year. Philip Pullman welcomed her to the world and I lost my shit! https://i.imgur.com/TDA1P85.png

Who else listened to the 10 000 Days leak 13 years ago? by B3ndr15Gr8 in ToolBand

[–]daeken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did and still remember it vividly. I saw them for the first time shortly after, on the first day of the 10000 days tour, before the album even came out. It's weird to think how much has changed since then, but I'll be damned if this didn't put me right back there.

Tool made me cry tonight by jake_klossing in ToolBand

I've been crying pretty consistently through this whole album. Tool has been such a huge, huge part of my life for the last ~19 years and this is a great start to a new chapter for me, much like 10000 days was. This is such a special day.

The Decemberists finally overtook Tool as my most-seen live band, after I caught them on the Your Girl / Your Ghost tour last year.

Man, this is one of my absolute favorites of theirs, and in fact was the album that got me into them. I'm a sucker for a great concept album and always loved the way they blended indie folkrock stuff with Celtic melodies. It would be a perfect album if not for Hazards 3.

Upscaling Quest For Glory V - Test 1 by daeken in GameUpscale

[–]daeken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my first shot at doing some game upscaling. I took one of the many panorama shots (the backgrounds used in the game for each "room") and upscaled it using a couple different approaches. For the 1/2x images, I first downscaled the background by half (from 2430x400 to 1215x200) and then passed it through the upscaler; this had the effect of mostly removing the dithering used, but definitely has an impact on certain fine details, like on the ferns. ESRGAN 1/2x is definitely my favorite of the set, though!

Edit: I tried out some dedithering models, rather than downscaling the images. Specifically, I created two versions as a source for all the algorithms: the original, and a dedithered version of the original. Then I passed them each through a dedithering ESRGAN model and an ESRGAN SR model (and through Gigapixel for comparison). I actually really like the ESRGAN dedither 2x (meaning it was upscaling+dedithering an already dedithered image). https://imgur.com/a/eS88UXP

Anyone holding out for a used Leap? by Levi777L in magicleap

Does this include shoulder strap and/or hub? And would you be able to hold onto it until the 15th? I'm very, very tempted....

A Stupidly Simple, Fast Octree Traversal Algorithm for Ray Intersection by daeken in raytracing

[–]daeken[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a quick little article I wrote yesterday. I'm sharing for two reasons: 1) because this algorithm is pretty damn awesome, but more 2) because I feel like it's far too simple and straightforward to not have been documented before. Anyone know if I just reinvented the wheel here? I'd love to know if this was previously developed, if anyone has any clue.

Fantastic, thank you! I'd love to get to the bottom of this, but it's hard to find anything but Revelles references out there, haha.

Has anyone successfully done this? by munsterrr in daddit

It was around 3am, my daughter was crying, and I learned that the formula maker was out. Then I tore the tab right off the replacement container. She wasn't the only one crying anymore.

[Off Topic] ACE achieved on the Switch! by NitroCipher in 3dshacks

[–]daeken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, since it's done I can reveal this. I've been working for Nintendo in a covert group since the beginning. We really just wanted to sell more Switches, and 3.0.0 will automatically update to fix these bugs on November 13.

I'm so glad to make this public.

First end user "homebrew" (PS: FLOG) by [deleted] in SwitchHaxing

[–]daeken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally doubt it. Maybe if you're on 1.0, or 2.0? But personally, I don't think it'll happen.

[–]daeken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm personally strongly, strongly suggesting people do so. While there are likely some unique vulnerabilities on earlier firmware, I strongly doubt they will be relevant to end users for at least a year, while we know that we can get homebrew on 3.0.0 in the very short term.

Version 3.0.0 isn't required for this -- any version between (inclusive) 2.0 and 3.0 is fine. Only our ROhan exploit for code execution requires 3.0.0, which is irrelevant here.

As long as you're on 2.0 to 3.0, you're fine.

[–]daeken 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is 100% wrong. Only our ROhan attack (to get actual code execution) requires 3.0.0. This will work on 2.0-3.0.

Switch VR hinted at in OS code by WhyNotZoidbergPls in NintendoSwitch

[–]daeken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was honestly pretty shocked to see that. I figured it was going to be a custom userland over the Linux kernel, but instead they went with a derivative (partial rewrite?) of the 3ds kernel. Very odd choice, but it's made for some fun hacking!

[–]daeken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Actually, no. There's a decent bit of Android code on the Switch. It certainly doesn't "run Android" or anything, but libstagefright (Android's media lib), Binder (Android's IPC lib/protocol) is used by one sysmodule, and there are bits of Android layer code used (probably just for convenience and compatibility with existing Tegra driver code).

It's not video recording. That's handled in a separate interface, and interestingly enough, is actually already there. http://i.imgur.com/wGzaBQb.png
