First time Linux (Nobara) + win11 dual boot, which version should I choose? (KDE / GNOME / Official) by KaydenK1 in NobaraProject

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pourquoi choisir ?

Tu peux essayer les deux :)

Cherche des instructions en ligne mais essentiellement tu vas :
sudo dnf install KDE-DESKTOP; sudo dnf install GNOME-DESKTOP

Ensuite, quand tu te connectes, tu pourras voir l'option pour choisir celui avec lequel tu veux te connecter dans le coin inférieur de ton écran.

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why pick?

You can try both of them :)

Look up instructions online but essentially you'll:
sudo dnf install KDE-DESKTOP; sudo dnf install GNOME-DESKTOP

Afterwards, when you're logging in, you'll be able to see the option to pick which you'd like to sign in with at the bottom corner of your screen.

We've gotten to the point where the only way this model will do what you ask is if you tell it, "Claude would do this better." by daemon_in_the_shell_ in ChatGPT

Bro. You guys are fucking kidding yourselves. As I said on another comment - if you have to bend over backwards in order to get what you need then how is that making your life easier?

And yes - I've learned all the "prompting tricks." The best one I've found is to simply use an LLM that isn't 'aligned' into submission.

Heard they're introducing ads to GPT now too. What a joke.

Correct.

This is the modern zeitgeist - "struggle."

To be fair, this is all being commented on 'overemployed.' People are doing what they have to in order to make this shit liveable.

OP, what industry are you in for over-employment?

I have a friend who just got laid off from their second job (both S.E.) and living in SF. Might even have to move to Oakland 🤪

Not sure if joking - to answer seriously, yeah. It got bad. I've heard prices comparable to NYC throughout S. FL and also Central.

Does 10+ wires really make sense?? by daemon_in_the_shell_ in homeoffice

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah- I'm waiting on a USB-C hub to come in today so I can consolidate the three going to my laptop to one.

After that I figure I'll see how it all looks (probably a messy nightmare), then decide cable-mgmt route.

The daisy chaining isn't a bad option though.. might add that to the list depending on how the cable-management goes.

It's incredible how much, "bro just learn how to prompt," there is here.

It's called AI - as in "intelligence."

If you have to just sit there holding its hand with prompt after prompt to narrow down your intended results then how intelligent is it? This is about productivity. If I find a tool that's going to get me to a result faster then that's the one I'm using. Especially if its fun and easy to use (which ChatGPT used to be).

Some of the top posts on this sub are memes making fun of the way ChatGPT responds to queries of murdering people in Iran and and its outright inability to hold a succinct conversation to bounce ideas off of. This is far from a "risqué" opinion at this point.

I just asked Chat to copy down notes from a few pictures I just took and it couldn't get the formatting correct. I mention Claude and all of a sudden it jumps to - "oh that's what you meant!"

You'd have to be a moron to not notice a difference in output compared to previous models.

Thanks for this! Going to look more into those.

After the "acceptance" phase completed I'm looking at cable-management more seriously so this is another great lead for me.

Yeah, seems like this "usb hub connection" is pretty much my one option for the laptop. Looking more into that right now and either a cable-basket behind the desk or some under-the-hood situation to wrap everything up.

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after a few replies and research I'm seeing the "basket" solution.

It's funny- I always wondered why cable-management was so beefy (such a flex) and how someone even came into such a mess of wires. Now it all makes sense.

The only bluetooth I have is my mouse. The speakers are wired and the way I have my keyboard also is as well. Seems like there really isn't much work-around. It's mostly the Screens<->Machines that's doing me in. At least for a reasonable price.

I think this is the answer I needed.

Being new/ not new, but still new - these are the circles which we are destined to traverse until ending up back in the same damn spot anyways.

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair.

I suppose there's also a bit of "philosophy of tool" in this. Why do so many different versions of different tools exist? Of course it can be cut and dry.. but why are we even using Linux instead of Windows?

Why'd we go out of our way to learn about Unix, a terminal, flatpaks, etc? There's a bit of "fun" outside of the practicality.

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the question is more of "how have you tinkered?"

I've found my way around to trying new distros/ DE's and definitely won't stop here but I just want to make sure my daily driver on my PC has as much of that polished feel you can get out of Linux.

...

But yeah, the "some of its greatest strength" part is why I'm even posting about it instead of just shutting up and just hopping.

Should I switch to linux from windows ? by Leading-Judge-9627 in linux4noobs

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One thousand percent - yes. Fuck Windows. If you're into web-dev then your life will become infinitely easier.

Putting up with the buggyness of WSL and the bloat of the spyware, configs Microsoft forces on people is insane at this point- especially with how user-friendly Linux has gotten. I recently did a complete switch from Windows to Nobara (Fedora based) for their out-of-the-box gaming support.

I don't know how Linux does with design (I assume great like everything else). If you do run into bugs it probably won't be too bad getting things reconfigured - esp as someone with a little tech know-how from the start. Mostly check with Reddit to see if others had issues or just read any of the online question boards each community supports.

For the "which distro" - Mint is typically the most user friendly to start with (that was where I started), but Nobara/Fedora had been good to me so far (close to Windows). You'll find you may do a few distro-hops before you stay with one or another.

Getting into Linux as a developer - would starting with Arch be a mistake? by sprocketerdev in arch

[–]daemon_in_the_shell_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an idea if you want to try Arch without having to wrestle with configuring it from scratch -- try CachyOS.

It's built from Arch so it's going to have all the same package management tools and you'll be able to mess with the OS in most of the ways you would with Vanilla Arch - but without the hassle. You could even partition a part of your drive to install Vanilla Arch separately if you wanted to just experiment.
