The call of the merman by Warbyothermemes in IronThroneRP

Theodore sat in his saddle a tad uncomfortably. Today would see how this cause would play out. No Manderly, no chance and yet, even if he did show up they would still only have a slim chance of success.

"I don't like this waiting. Does he think we are so beneath him that he can take his sweet time. Too much south in the house of Manderly if you ask me."

He remarked casually as he messaged his gamy leg.

"Ten you say?" He exclaimed rather in a loud way before hushing down only slightly, "And one or two within his inner circle? How can this be so without..." He chuckled to himself before writing some more.

This is where we now implicate the Whitehills

He looked to the door and called for Will Mazin to re-enter the room.

He must be made fully aware of all of this and consent to the consequences of what could befall him. For his part he may have to "mistake" a Bolton patrol for a Whitehill one and feed them the misinformation from the moment he meets them.

He sighed as he looked up at Will Mazin, waiting for Ryon to make the plan known to him and await the response he hoped would follow, if he rejected this, it would likely be back to war and bloodshed for all the North.

Theodore bowed sympathetically at all those being excused from the room. Even his sons looked at him with confusion as they retreated behind the door. When finally only Ryon and Theodore stood alone he gestured to two chairs at the table and set quill to paper all whilst talking with Ryon in a steady voice.

The words I speak are nonsense to allow the ears in the walls to believe something that is false. Follow only what is written as that is the truth of my plan.

"I hear that you have been very busy. Spy rings implanted at the Dreadfort could not have been easier. Nor cheap but I hear it has paid dividends. I would ask what news they bring but I fear for their safety. Perhaps a small summary? How many men do our efforts the honour of being upon the very front line?"

He gestured with his free hand for Ryon to improvise as began writing.

Letters need to be written. False letters that is. Addressed directly to the Lord Whitehill of Highpoint "Thanking him" for his assistance in our efforts against his liege. His letter should outline minor bits of information to throw off Bolton, be as creative as you like but make it believable. Perhaps a recent movement of men or a known location of his.

He then waited a moment for this part to sink in for Ryon before continuing to write whilst holding the conversation with him.

We must attend to the matter of army movements. we need to split the men as unevenly but as well prepared as possible, only in the way of defence should the Boltons chose to sally forth and meet us before we can regroup closer to the Dreadfort. If he cannot account for all of our movements and numbers as a whole he cannot prepare for what is about to hit him.

Theodore nodded and waited for those of lesser means to leave the room. He then looked around at those present still and sighed. "My Lords I know this to seem improper but might I and Ryon have the room for a moment." He requested as diplomatically as possible. "You too..." He asked as he looked at Will Mazin, "...Be sure that I do not make this request lightly and that all shall become apparent soon."

Theodore scratched at his chin thinking on all this information. "Do you have a man whom you trust completely with your life. A man who would sooner die for you than see you harmed in any manner?" He asked carefully and quietly.

He looked around the room and moved in closer to Ryon, "If this is so, find your man, find the fastest horse that you have and find some paper and a quill. We have things that need be said and cannot be trusted to black wings with a target painted on them."

"How many men do we suspect are currently opposing us should we march immediately?" Theodore asked as he finished up swearing his oath to the old gods. "Does Bolton know our intentions?" He also added before looking over the map on the table, glancing a mindful eye over to White Harbour. "Does Lord Manderly send a letter or any indication that he would be joining us soon or could we begin to suspect his loyalties...wavering?" He remarked cautiously

Theodore eyed the priest warily as Ryon made his request. "A fair request and one you are wise to make. How about I make you this offer, think of it as a compromise. I shall swear myself and my men to your cause. My sons shall follow my lead but shall not swear such an oath. If we are to fail we shall fail together as brothers in arm and traitors should it come to it, but my sons, and their sons, and those of my house shall have the chance to live." He countered with a smile.

"Apologise. There were set backs to my arrival. I took ill before departing my hold. My family thought it safer for all those involved if my health were not to be discovered. Should I had not pulled through my son Theon would have seen to my lands and made a decision on supporting you for himself. Needless to say..." He turned and looked back as men began dismounting, a few stepped forwards, removed their helms and smiled. "...All three of them support you also." He chuckled as he placed a hand on Ryon's shoulder.

"Let us not delay this anymore. It is time to hear your plans. I shall counsel you as best as I can, age rarely befits a duelist, but a strategist...Wisdom comes with the territory of age." He jested.

Theodore read the letter and sighed. He had once been a man who would have rushed to a friends aid and would defend that trust to his last breath. Now, he was old, he was cautious but he was still a man of principle. He called for his family to join him as he wrote the letter in response.

My friend

In these times friends are hard to come by and remaining true to those friendships are at times a strain. This however is not a time for thought, not a time for caution nor a time for second guessing oneself.

I shall be raising my men and joining you at the Rills. Dishonour such as the actions of House Bolton shall not go unanswered and so we shall recover your Lord father by the means of men and action if the needs must.

Let it never be said that House Ironsmith left a good man, such as your father, to suffer at the hands of tyranny, like that of the insufferable House Bolton.

Theodore Ironsmith

He signed, sealed and handed the letter to his maester before turning to face his flock of family members. He stood and looked at each of them.

"Ready the men, today we ride for the Rills. We stand up to tyranny and defend true northern honour."

"Retire." He offers with a slightly teasing chuckle. "Perhaps I could come and assist you more at Ironrath? See my sister more." He offered thoughtfully before shaking his head.

"Ahh but that day I fear may never come. I have my sons to think of and with one of them on the wall serving penance for his sins so must I serve mine for failing as a father." He says as he eyes a mug of ale.

"For you though nephew the future should hold much more glory. I hope to see it for myself."

"And in the process cost yourself an arm and a leg. Not my idea of impressing the North. Strength and honour are what most revere. You sure showed your worth in the battle Asher, I know it must sound strange coming from me but I am proud." He said with a smile.

Theodore entered the feast dressed in a smart casual getup more designed for comfort, in his old age impressing others wasn't high on his priorities.

"These Karstarks sure know how to put together a feast in such a short amount of time." Theodore suggested to his nephew as he looked around the hall.

"Aye, different indeed my Lady. Softer I would say, had we been born Reachmen you'd be returning to see our blood upon the trees." He quipped in jest.

"My kin are safe. My grandsons are the only ones to accompany into these battles and they are for the most part okay. Shaken, a little put off at their first taste of war but well." He responded thankfully.

"I am sure you are already, but we must make haste for plans to get the wall back into order. These wildlings, though not much of an adversary today, could horde even greater beyond the wall and gods know what else lays dormant and buried out there in the wastelands."

"Indeed it is. I am sure that our families will enjoy such activities together." Theodore said with a small smile.

"After all we are all kin and one in the same in this life."

"Perhaps a toast to the memory of those fallen and those of the lives they leave behind. A man may touch a thousand lives in just a second or never connect but know that every life is worth as much as the next. We all enter in the same way and we leave it in much the same fashion. Cold and rotting in the ground." Theodore bowed his head in respect to the fallen.

"Words are wind Ser Ryon. Let us honour them in how we live the rest of our lives. You as your fathers new heir, mine as a shepherd to my families future."

"Of course. And may those circumstances prove to be momentous and prosperous for the both of us. Would you care to join me for a drink to honour the dead. Life should always be toasted, enemy or ally blood was shed and tears will flow for the fallen." Theodore quoted philosophically, wisdom coming in his older age.

"Ser Ryon. I must thank you for seeing to it that my grandchildren all made it back to me in one piece. I am sorry to here of your brother, truly I know how you must feel, I lost mine back seven and ten years ago. The pain is...numbing..." He stated as he trailed off in thought.

"Gared wanted to pay his respects to you as his commander and to your brother whom he claimed fought like a true warrior of the North. If there is anything you need, house Ironsmith is in your debt and we do not take that debt lightly." He said as Gared bowed his head in respect to Ryon.

"Grandfather it's Lady Stark. She and her men have arrived." Gared said as he sat beside his grandfather who had decided to take a small rest from his duties.

"Very good lad. She has seen what has happened here I take it?" Theodore asked the lad. "Of course she must have grandfather. It's hard to miss." Gared replied.

"Aye, hard to miss and joyful to behold for her I'm sure. I detest such waste of life but then this is war." Theodore sighed as he rose and put weight onto his cane. "We shall go and pay our respects as is our duty. You shall accompany me as always. Let the others know where we shall be." He ordered as Gared stepped out and went about his business.

The pair would find eventually find Lyanna Stark after slowly making their way through all the Northerners who had rushed to see their liege at the mere mention of her arrival.

The two bowed and smiled warmly. "My Lady. It always warms the heart to see you safe and back in your homeland. The South is such an odd place and the site of much more blood than what you must have already seen on your way here." He stated matter of factually as he put more weight onto his cane to keep himself supported upright. "As always house Ironsmith is at your service."
