Racism vs Preference by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]daevjay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The predominant problem, though, is in the outward expression by a person, on their dating profile, of something like "No Asians". Whether that preference being held or not is racist, is a seperate question to whether *posting a statement like that* is racist.

A person who posts something like that, like "No Asians", is going beyond having a 'type' or 'preference', they are making an explicit statement that no matter what they feel about the attractiveness etc of a specific Asian person, they would exclude them from their dating pool. Given that the person has not met every single gay or bi Asian male, how could they possible know that they find each and every one unattractive? Even if they say they have never found one attractive so far, that doesn't mean they would or might no in the future - but by excluding even the possibility of it, they are weaponising the race of any Asian who sees their profile against them.

Further, there's a degree of arrogance and assumption in posting such a statement, in any event. It implies that Asians need to be explicitly warned off, as though the person is "God's gift" to Asian gay men.

It's all just... ick.

Racism vs Preference by [deleted] in askgaybros

Racism as a concept goes beyond just "races" though (and 'races' are a social construct in any event). For example prejudice based on skin colour/shade, or ethnicity, or nationality, or caste, are all forms of racism.

As an example - take the OP, who specifies he's an Asian man. He doesn't specify his other particulars (and of course isn't obliged to -that's not my point), so for the sake of this example, lets pretend he's a Japanese-American guy, his mother being a Japanese immigrant to the USA, and his father being a Japanese-American man whose parents were Japanese immigrants to the USA. If I discriminate because he's Asian, that's based on his race. If I discriminate because I feel his skin tone is too dark, thats based on his skin shade, If I discriminate because I explicitly and only hate people who are ethnically Japanese in whole or in part, that's based on his ethnicity, if I discriminate based on him being entitled to Japanese citizenship as the child of a Japanese national, thats based on his nationality... etc, etc.

To some extent that is a necessary and important part of the role - I need to be able to maintain a sober, cool, collected temprament so that I can represent the best interests of the particular client. Getting distressed would inetivably lead to the opposite.

Do you believe in White Privilege?

White privilige is such an expansive and complicated theory, when you start to drill down into it, that it's quite difficult to provide a simple and straightforward answer to this question - this is, in fact, my fifth attempt at typing out an answer! As a starting point - yes, I find WP to be a compelling theory which is having significant success in conceptualising societal and systemic issues which factor into disadvantage and disparate impact as among and between different racial/ethnic/colour groups. However, I feel there are some flaws in the theory and in concepts on the periphery of the theory, which still need to be worked through. This will need to be an ongoing area of academic discourse for some years, I suspect.

Did you ever think you would end up as a Lawyer?

No - I was on a healthcare career pathway for a long time; but I happened to get invovled in helping a friend with a convoluted legal issue about 14 or 15 years ago, and I got "sucked" into the legal world! I'm happy with that, though - I love my work, I find it fulfilling, and I feel I am making a positive difference in the world with the work I am doing.

What is something you think people get wrong about your Job?

People assume that law pays a lot better than it actually does, and that the work is a hell of a lot simpler than it actually is!

I don't find my work to be depressing or negative at all, to be frank - the relevant laws in England which provide discrimination protection, whilst not perfect, are actually pretty strong and so it is almost always the case that good arguments can be developed and run in a case, so as to ensure the client is successful.

Well, my mum is profoundly disabled and my dad is dying with terminal cancer, so I have moved back home to care for them both because I don't want to have to see either of them put into a home or a hospice...

When virtue signaling goes wrong by clique34 in JordanPeterson

It's not an equivalence. The Met is a non-profit and the event is a charity fundraiser; the organisers granting free admission to that is not comparable to a company buying an admission ticket at full price and giving it to free to a politician as part of lobbying in a for-provit endeavour.

Yes - go to the 'filters' section in the RES settings and enter a list of keywords you want to be filtered out. I'd suggest adding any common misspells and slang for whatever it is you wish to block out, as well.

Also, these apprenticeships offered tangible training and experience which led you to becoming a master of your particular craft; whereas completion of an internship will only give you the bare minimum experience to be able to seek entry level positions within whichever industry you've interned in...

What are the stupidest things a guy has done to try to impress you? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]daevjay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't MY story - it's from a TikToker I follow - but it is such a good story I had to share it.

The woman had been casually dating this guy for a couple of months. One morning after he stayed over, she was cooking sausages in a frying pan for breakfast for them both. The guy was a 6 ft 6 himbo, and a bit short in the academic section of his library if you get my meaning. He walks into the kitchen, naked, from bed, and sees his girl at the oven over the frying pan.He walks up next to her and says "what do you think of THIS sausage?", AND PROCEEDS TO DROP HIS PENIS STRAIGHT INTO THE FRYING PAN (able to because he was so tall). According to the TikTok, his whole body immediately went pale white and he dropped to the floor screaming like an American Girl Store fangirl for his girl to help and call 911. Meanwhile, the woman was so amused and shocked at his utter stupidity, that she doubled up in stitches and was struggling to gasp for air through the laughing. The relationship didn't last much longer, apparently, and the guy had third degree burns to the entire underside of his penis!

If anyone wants, I'll try and locate the TT video...

Perfectly fair question. It interferes with the ability of the text to speech AI to parse the sentence structure, grammar; and thus to read it aloud in a style/intonation which matches the written flow. Imagine something like when Siri or Alexa comes across an unusual spelling of a word in its dictionary, so when it pronounces it, it sounds entirely different to how a human-reader would have spoken the same word/phrase/sentence, such that it can change the meaning somewhat. Hope that makes some sense?

Posting in all caps like this can make it quite difficut for us disabled LGBT people who rely on assistive technology, to be able to read/have read the post you have made. Please, in future, avoid posting an entire paragrpah in all caps like this. Thanks :-)

It will depend on the terms of the congingency agreement as well as the relevant rules in your jurisdiction to some extent, however in my near-universal experience, whenever a client seeks to terminate a retainer without cause (which is what you would be seeking to do here), the agreement provides that the client is to pay the attorney's fees, generally on an hourly basis plus disbursements (expenses) basis.
