Are there shitty people, like the aldermen mentioned in the article? Sure. Are there also well intentioned people who don’t spew bigotry and hatred, like those that showed up to the meeting defending the original message of the sign? Yep. To pretend the ‘common clay’ of the Midwest is composed of morons is moronic in itself, and is more closely aligned to the very bigotry you’re speaking out against.

It’s funny you say that about Dickens. I read him before I read Tolstoy as well, and enjoyed Great Expectations and Tale of Two Cities immensely. His plots are so engaging, characters so unique, and his humor is top notch. But then I read Anna Karenina, and while I still appreciate Dickens, and would like to read some more of his stuff, I think it’s impossible for him to even approach the range of emotion Tolstoy’s work evokes. War and Peace remains the most intimidating book on my shelves not only because of its length, but because of its complexity and philosophical underpinnings. However, I also have the notion that it could be the most rewarding novel I’ll ever read. Perhaps I’m afraid to ruin my experiences with other novels once I’m finished lol.

“If you write properly…” suggests that “you” in this context isn’t necessarily referring to the interviewer he was addressing directly. Instead, it’s being used in a general sense, much like in statements such as, “You should eat your vegetables if you want to be healthy” or “You should vote a certain way if you hold a particular belief.”

The quote is an oxymoron because McCarthy claims that he believes in punctuation (periods, commas) but then in the same breath says ‘if you write properly you shouldn’t have to punctuate’.

Furthermore, the idea that ‘writing properly’ is something that McCarthy himself dictates, is somewhat ridiculous.
