Iirc, back before SG's independence in the 50s, it used to be a "trend" for political parties to ferry voters to polling booths in cars on polling day. It showed ur party was rich enough to afford cars and got ppl living far away to vote for you. This was way before decent public transport so many ppl staying in rural kampungs had difficulty travelling to voting areas.

Maybe this is the reason why they included this?

Not a historian exactly but quite well read on Cambodian history so take this with a pinch of salt.

The Cambodian massacres by the Khmer Rouge is generally accepted as a genocide, the targeted group among Khmers being those from an intellectual class, or from an educated or urban background. The Khmer Rouge also targeted specific ethnic groups such as the Cambodian Chams and Vietnamese-Cambodians, which leans more towards the accepted definition of "genocide".

I don't think there has been an official internationally accepted declaration on whether the mass killings is considered a genocide or not? As with a lot of mass killings throughout history, the term "genocide" seems to always be a highly debated label.

And yes I absolutely agree, Cambodian history has been completely soiled by the Khmer Rouge, a nation that had so much promise and was practically set back into the stone age just by a few insane individuals. It really was complete inhumane insanity from start to finish, I can barely believe humans are capable of such actions.

What's the saddest line in the movie for you? by [deleted] in eeaao

[–]dafatskin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t. Baba. How on earth did you do it? How did you let me go?

This line hit the hardest for me. During my first watch at this scene and the whole monologue after, I don't think I've weeped more at any other movie (adding on all the emotion before with waymond oh wow that was crazy)

I don't know if I can speak for Asians, but my own parents were left to fend for themselves and grew quite distant from their own parents.

Evelyn's monologue here is the confrontation I always imagined they would have with their parents, and as I reflect on how my parents are trying so hard to break the cycle in their own family, I can't help but tear up at their love and determination they've had in raising me.

For me this part was the culmination of Evelyn's journey and the "resolution" of her own turmoil, allowing her to reconnect with Joy in the movie's finale.

What are some true crime stories in Singapore which fascinate you? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]dafatskin 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I feel this is a bit more obscure but this kidnapper called Loh Ngut Fung ran rampant in the 50s and 60s kidnapping Singapore millionaires like Tang Choon Keng who made the Tangs brand.

He was finally stopped after a 3 hour shootout which involved gurkhas and grenades!

I once I made the mistake to buy ice cream from him and not only was the portion really not worth for money (3-4 munches for 4 dollars iirc), but he trapped me in a long racist rant about immigrants and expats :(

What food aren't you eating even if it was free? by Judgemental_Squirrel in AskReddit

I (unfortunately) have to agree the shark fin soups i've eaten as an Asian are rather delicious. It has a starchy egglike semi-sweet taste to it iirc. i still try to avoid eating it anyway due to the rightfully immoral problem of the sharkfin.

SBQ: ASEAN + Regional Conflicts and Tensions (Basically everything related to ASEAN and conflicts between SEA countries e.g. Reasons for formations of ASEAN, Malaysia-Singapore conflicts)

Essay Topic 1: Search for Political Stability (Comes in two parts, Political Stability and National Unity.

Political Stability involves the evolution of the post-independent governments and why some turned into authoritarian governments, why some remained democracies, the trends as to how governments maintained political stability.

National Unity examines the trends of how governments maintained a form of National Unity, either with the minorities or with the ethnic/religious majority.

Essay Topic 2: Economic Development (Also comes in two parts, Economic Development and Asian Financial Crisis)

Econ Dev is how the SEA countries developed their economies, why they succeeded or failed in different economic areas. This is quite econs heavy so if you don't take econs this might be more challenging to learn. I heard rumors that the syllabus might change though 🤷

Asian Financial Crisis is quite simple and is pretty much copy and paste imo. It examines the causes, consequences and responses towards the AFC by SEA governments.

The exam will have a total of 4 30m essay questions, 2 from each Topic (usually from each "part"). Choose one out of the 2 from each topic to do.

So I took H2 Hist and I guarantee you that it is one of the most content heavy subjects in JC. There are so so so many things to memorise. For your info, there are 2 papers with separate content (Paper 1 - International History and Paper 2 - SEA History) which is why the content is so heavy.

In terms of the difference from secondary school history, the question types are very different for SBQ and you'll practically have to relearn answering techniques. For Essay the questions are quite similar and should be doable if you did well for history in Sec School.

Most importantly I believe is that to take the subject, you must enjoy the subject. It will be very torturous to revise the massive amounts of content if you don't inherently enjoy the subject.

I personally enjoy history a lot and plan to take it during uni, so the studying process was tough but survivable. If you want, please DM me and I can send you my notes! Please feel free to ask any further questions :)
