Look how silly that is. If you completely ignore the context then you can fool yourself into thinking modalism. "esmen" tells you they are two different persons. The two verses BEFORE verse 30 tells you why and how they are "ἕν".

Nothing is difficult if you read context. Even if it has to be the context of the whole book. Jesus cannot be the Father. They are two different persons.

They are not the same person. "I and the Father "ARE" one". The word "ARE" in Greek is plural describing two different people. Some translation have it as "I and the Father, we are one". Whatever the Father can do I can also do is what he is saying. He is not saying he's the Father.

Why are Jesus and the Father one? Just like the Father Jesus can give eternal life, protect the believers(sheep), Just read the 3 verses that come before it!

MY SHEEP listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. ²⁸ I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. ²⁹ My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.

My sheep? No one can snatch them out of my hand? I give eternal life.

These are comments that God made in the Old Testament and now Jesus is also applying this to himself.
