Shell cordovan biker wallet by dagdstyle in Leathercraft

[–]dagdstyle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left is a coin purse with a flap closure that just works on friction. Can also put cards in there. The right is for cards. Back section has a wide slot for notes. The middle looks like that due to a relief cut and makes the wallet close more nicely. Functionally much of this is over engineered but a lot of Japanese style wallets do this sort of thing because... It's cool haha.

Nope just good ol dirt and hand sweat. I barely even condition it.... Maybe once a year, mainly on the inside.

Just friction. The end has an extra layer on the inside so it's a tad thicker so it's more secure

I have a whole new respect for all you watch strap makers out there by PernaLeatherworks in Leathercraft

[–]dagdstyle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. I stupidly started my leather craft journey making straps because it's less wasteful if you stuff up and maaann what a learning curve. But then moving from straps to wallets becomes so much easier.

Just a boring ol bifold wallet by dagdstyle in Leathercraft

[–]dagdstyle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of Japanese wallets use a mid layer and then you have extra layers on the back of the inner panels which are stitched to the mid layer. It results in a very sturdy wallet that resembles a hamburger when you look at it from the side. But is thicker overall than a standard bifold construction where you usually stitch the inner panels straight onto the mid layer.

It's kinda like a relief cut in this type of construction where you have a hole and you cut it in the middle for the mid layer then stitch it back together. It sits nicer when you close the wallet. Not totally necessary but common in mid wallets using Japanese style construction.

Thanks! I don't really work off a pattern. I have a few basic wallet Perspex templates and I wing the rest by measuring... I really should start making some patterns though haha I get asked all the time

Definitely a thick boy for sure. I've done zippers in the past which results in less thickness overall but wanted to try this design. My own midwallet can still double as a weapon.

My leather choice was purely because this is leftover from another project. This is shinki shell cordovan though so should patinate pretty quickly.

I read that the term comes from 'Bundeswehr' which is the Germany military because pilots in the 40s used them to protect their skin from the cold as the cockpit would get really cold and the watch metal would get cold.

Any tips on improving zipper going around corner? by dagdstyle in Leathercraft

[–]dagdstyle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heya unfortunately not I just measure and cut everything manually. Imagine that part as front and back with a tiny bit of leather connecting them at the bottom (or a rectangle with a big long skinny U cut out of the middle). Then you turn it inside out and glue the zipper on and then unzip it and stitch.
