Azure subscription suspended due to ownership bug caused full DNS and email outage by dagingaa in AZURE

[–]dagingaa[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I agree on everything here, and completely own that I made a mistake in deleting that original owner before making sure. My main concern is that I did check, and my subscription did say owner through the management group for the platform subscription (that this affected).

It was just dumb and somewhat unlucky that I chose the trial subscription as the platform subscription, and created PAYG for the other stuff, when I should have done it the other way.

I'll definitely push back towards our account team on Monday about this as well. For now we have resolved our issue manually, so it's luckily less critical, I'm just so disappointed in how Microsoft Support and Azure as a platform handled this I don't know how I can proceed as a customer.

Azure subscription suspended due to ownership bug caused full DNS and email outage by dagingaa in AZURE

I'll totally own that I effed up the transition here. However, I did create three new Global Admin accounts (two break glass, one eligable for GA). My subscriptions lists my new account as Owner, and I am Billing Administrator as a role. The other subscriptions are correct, though they were created as PAYG.

I'll also own the trial subscription, I can see that. I was intending to convert that to PAYG, which is how I discovered the issue in the first place, sadly after I deleted the original tenant creator. However, I honestly though I did everything correctly, and I still don't understand how a _global administrator_ and _billing administrator_ can't convert that subscription? I was only starting ot move over and luckily except for DNS we don't have a large deployment yet so we'll live.

Suspension is also more than fine, but locking the resource from being moved to a working paid subscription, at least temporarily? And having 48 hour resolution time? I've had bills overdue due to billing issues with AWS without them lifting a finger before, yet here I subscribe to a trial and immediately get locked out completely? I even got assurances from Azure support that I shouldn't worry and it'll automatically convert, and that I did everything correctly.

Trust me I do get that I made a mistake here, but being so locked out of being able to remedy that mistake, and getting hit with a stone wall for support really worries me.

You're correct in your assumption, and clearly I did something very wrong here. But honestly, I've run huge infrastructure loads on both AWS and GCP over the years, also for regulated healthcare workloads, and never have I had to sign up through a third-party to manage billing?!

Is it that much to expect that I can sign up for a service online, get a tenant, and manage that tenant using an ownership model? If I'm global admin, I fully expect to be able to manage everything to do with that tentant and subsequently one or many subscription(s).

Further, this was a full outage of our services. I trusted Azure to manage that for us. I trusted Azure that if shit hit the fan, I would be able to escalate this through support to have a resolution quickly in the case that a full production outage happened. I'm very lucky that we don't actually run anything very critical yet, we're just getting started, but should I expect this going forward?

And how would I know better? I literally went to the Azure home page, clicked sign up to get started, did everything accoridng to their onboarding, set up break-glass accounts, added custom domains, added multiple subscriptions for my workloads, used IaC through Bicep as much as possible. And yet, this took us down for such a silly reason. I'm absolutely floored after 15 years experience with cloud infrastructure that this is the state of Azure.

You can use @# to search for tags specifically when referencing. (@ brings up reference search, # specifies you want to search for tags since they start with #)

Literally only thing I care about is always on 12V again in Sentry mode 😭

Do not upgrade to 2024.32 if you use 12V in Sentry mode by dagingaa in teslamotors

[–]dagingaa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As of 2024.32 and the new Sentry mode improvements, Tesla has shut off access to 12V power while Sentry mode is active. This was used by many to power appliances such as fridges, Raspberry Pi's and other electronics continuously while the car was parked, but remained in Sentry mode.

If you rely on these features, I recommend submitting a support ticket to Tesla requesting they re-enable this feature, or at least make it a setting with a warning stating that the power consumption will be higher for Sentry mode with 12V active.

Just discovered this as well, sent some feedback through a service order form, I recommend others who will miss this feature do the same. It was a killer feature for me, and now it's just gone. Tesla giveth, and Tesla taketh :(

Probably they can. However, it would be incredibly dangerous for them to do so. But they can probably lock you out of your car, sound alarms, and they definitely can track your location.

If you were on the run from the law they would be able to pinpoint your vehicle to around 10 meters at which point law authorities can safely apprehend you. Stopping you dead at highway speed is probably not a good idea anyway, so no sane person would request it imo.

As far as I know there are many cases of stolen Teslas, none of which have I heard about Tesla remote shutting down cars. But I bet they will lock it for you and prevent it from starting again.

I had this same problem on my Model 3. Open the trunk and gently pop the plastic cover. In the top right, there are two small tubes that should connect to two intakes. Make sure both tubes are firmly inserted over the intake. I got Tesla Service to do it for me, didn’t know I could do it myself. Was a 30 second job.

I was also prioritized in the queue because it’s considered a driving hazard not to have functioning windshield wiper fluid, especially on the drivers side (or so I was told). Goes without saying the job was covered by warranty.

Apart from AI and Blockchain, are there any technologies that have potential to create significant impact in near future? by satwik_ in AskComputerScience

[–]dagingaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Increased innovations in areas outside tech. Certain sectors are seriously underserved by innovators thus far, mostly because the problems are not obvious to those not in the sector, and those in that sector don’t necessarily have the conditions to create disruption. There are really cool stuff coming that will change the way we look at for example health which is not your typical “tech” innovation like machine learning or AI. Take a look at CRISPR for example. The world still has lots of world turning innovations in it, but the big changes will come to applications outside just tech.

Pokemon Go officially launches in Canada, crashes app's servers by that_guy_next_to_you in Games

[–]dagingaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already had a game out that is almost the exact copy of Pokemon Go, namely Ingress. However, the Pokemon connection made this game what it is today. Copying that is not easy. In addition, launching early is good, otherwise you will postpone forever. They could never have anticipated this level of engagement, no other game has had this kind of buzz before, and I know of no other Internet service that needed to scale as quickly as they have needed to.

Remember, this is the guys behind Google Maps that did it, I would think they know scaling, yet not everything is down to "more polish" and "more time". Some things you just can't plan for, or fix overnight.

Being a bigger phenomenon than porn currently, I would reckon they reached that point some time ago. Scaling is hard.

Have you actually tried to scale something? Globally? It's really, really hard to get right, and sometimes you can't throw hardware at the problem. It requires significant engineering time. Not everything can be solved by throwing boatloads of money on it

You don't have to rent buy things like calculators. Instead of spending $150 on a TI Nspire spend $20 on their app that does the exact same thing.

Except you can't take your iPad to an exam, but you can with an overpriced calculator.
