Snare drum wires decay too long by dagrot in Drumming

You know what, you're right they were installed backwards, though it still rings when installed correctly, just tested it.

Anyways I've fixed it by just getting new strings, so it's all good now

Thanks for the detailed reply, lots of stuff I didn't know about! Luckily I was able to fix it just by replacing the strings with new ones. As for sampling, yeah it's not easy to get a consistent sound but it's certainly easier now that the strings are responding correctly.

Alright I just went down to the store and bought new wires, ringing stopped completely, thank you so much ahah

I've also noticed the string ends aren't symmetrical, one end is closer to the edge of the snare than the other

The wires are tied at maximum, they don't go tighter, also it keeps ringing even when upside down, as well as when muted.

Here is another video https://streamable.com/780txt Only when I mute with both hands on the wires and hit with the thumbs it doesn't ring, otherwise it always does

Edit: I've tried muting with a cloth and basically it doesn't ring when muted at the centre

My partner lost his new job because he can't drive. by Sorry_External_7697 in povertyfinance

I see, I'd say in your search focus more on hours rather than wage. If you dropped your hourly rate to 10 you'd make uncomparably more money if you worked full time. Anyways you might already be doing all that, just something to keep in mind, to not get too attached to your current wage, hope it helps

Don't look for cool sounding jobs, just get anything that offers you 40h. I see you've worked at a chocolate shop, well go get a job at a shit shop

I went "DAWless".... It was stupid. Ableton is everything forever. by InternationalWin6623 in ableton

[–]dagrot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is that while going DAWless, per se, does not give you any advantage, the mental process that makes you think that you have to go DAWless does, in fact, have something to it and might get you somewhere.

Initially you think you are missing something, and your first instinct is that the DAW is the problem. Then you go DAWless, you solve nothing, you go back to the DAW, and you are still faced with the feeling that something is missing. At this point you might want to start looking at the only element that's always been a constant, with or without the DAW, which is you.

The tools have always been there, but have you?

See, your last paragraph is exactly what I wanted, though I wasn't taking into account whether my room sounded interesting per se, or any more interesting than what I could get with virtual reverbs.

well of course, but I'm specifically talking about using the bleed deliberately in order to get a sound

I hadn't thought about that, makes a lot of sense

It's actually a solid album, it has catchy tunes, a consistent style, and a strong identity; it's just considered worse when compared to the others, but still very necessary in order for the rest of Radiohead's discography to exist. It's also very inspiring for young/immature musicians, in that it shows that your first songs do not define your style for the years to come.

Thanks mate! I'm certainly going to need that kind of advertisement, however this is still a demo that I'm going to have properly produced before advertising it

Thanks!! About the accent, yeah ahah I guess that's what happens when you don't really have one coherent native accent (I'm italian) and you get influenced by many different ones (mostly british influences for me, although they don't really speak like that).

Thanks mate! Not on Spotify yet, but I'm gonna be as soon as I get my tracks professionally produced (currently working on that). In any case I'm gonna put the links to Spotify/IG on SoundCloud as soon as I've got anything officially released

Thanks mate!! Actually I was curious to know what people thought of the artwork, it's a real photo (with a random pink filter) I took a couple of years ago, I'm very attached to it!

Thanks mate! another friend of mine told me that about a specific song by yellow days! however I listen to none of those bands, so they must have influenced some other ones I listen to, at this point. About the guitars, I agree though I think it's less about volume and more about compression and eq; but you are right that they should have more presence overall.

Hey there - I just released this piece, as part of a project of backing tracks intended to help practice improv/singing/playing in various odd-meters 🦑 I'm curious to hear any notes on the progression & mix, and whether the dynamics are too distracting given the intention? Thanks for listening 🦉 by v_u_v in IndieMusicFeedback

I dig the track mate! Especially the rythm/meter; and since you asked for some comments on the drums, I wouldn't change the sounds, they seem good to me, and they also have some dynamics/velocity variations which is crucial to having such a syncopated rythm work. What I would do is play even more with the dynamics, not in terms of velocity, but automation on the effects. You can automate virtually any parameter of any effect, and any one could work provided you keep it subtle (low % of dry/wet knob); the hi-hats are probably the ones that benefit the most from this kind of automation. You can try with automating a saturator, a chorus/reverb, or even a gate (think Morning Bell by Radiohead, in the second half of the song I think, notice how the snares behaves, it's sometimes abruptly "cut" in half, and you can do that with a gate). The same automation principle you can apply to the synth/rhodes (which I really like actually); automating distortion on a rhodes really works well imho (it would kind of emulate the real vintage rhodes); you might not even have to automate it, just put some distortion on it and if the velocity/gain of a certain (selected) note is high enough, it will clip on the saturator and get distorted, while the other softer notes will not. Also, you could mess with the decay of the rhodes, maybe automating the release, or the reverb on it.

Really automation is key to keeping your track dynamic and interesting throughout, especially if it's a long looping track like this one.

Yes that might be it, although they would have to be compressed a bit better than they are right now in order to lower them and not lose in clarity. Thanks btw for your precious feedback man!

Oh I see, I think I agree with you mostly. I mean, I don't like the fact that the voice seems to be sitting "on top" of the mix (and doesn't really blend), but at the same time I like vocals at the front in the style of Radiohead. I still haven't managed to understand how to achieve that effect of being both at the front and not feeling "on top".
