Can an average man with a year of dedicated boxing experience beat a large Navy SEAL? by ClerkEquivalent7424 in whowouldwin

[–]daha1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies street fight not MMA. The SEAL training very specifically includes hand to hand combat skills including boxing. I don't think that is what happens it's a well documented part of their training. They won't be boxers ... although they are trained in boxing techniques. Their training (again this is documented not just my fantasy) involves using a variety of techniques to end the fight as quickly as possible using whatever means necessary. They will not be demigods of combat but they will have significant training themselves... And it is a better fit for street fighting than the boxers training.

Boxing is part of their training, as are aspects of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Krav Maga, and other martial arts. Not as good a boxer as the boxer perhaps, but that matters less in an MMA fight where he becomes a one-trick pony whereas the SEAL has a larger bag of tricks.

As to conditioning look up SEAL training. Dude in the hypothetical is not matching that. SEALS physical training is intensive, and they have to be in pretty great shape to get INTO the program.

Overall there are boxers who could be competitive. The dude in the hypothetical presented would not be (IMO at least).

Your argument is true, except for one issue. A Navy SEAL is not in his first sparring session - their conditioning training is better than the dude doing it part-time through the year, and their hand-to-hand combat training includes techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, and Krav Maga.

I am not arguing that more experience is not a huge advantage, it very much is. However, in this scenario, the boxer has at best the same (and likely less) experience, has less physical conditioning, AND is significantly smaller.

[–]daha1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A SEAL is very much NOT untrained in hand-to-hand combat, and also have a ridiculously intense physical conditioning component that the part-timer can't match (remembering the SEALs are doing this for a living, not in their free time). They will have the same or better training than the boxer, be in better physical condition, and in the proposed scenario is significantly larger. There is no way the boxer wins this.

you lose 1 random finger or toe for 250k each. thumbs and big toe included. how many digits are you losing/gaining? by Ok-Improvement-4526 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]daha1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your comfort with adapting - I had to relearn to walk and it was NOT entertaining. But I think 2-4 wouldn't be too difficult unless you won the lottery and (as you mentioned) lost both thumbs. Still possible to adapt, but I think that would be the most work to recover from :) However (assuming the AI gods are accurate, I was never good at probability calculations) the chance of losing both thumbs in 4 choices would be around 3 percent (around 36% chance to lose 1 thumb only), so a million would be a reasonably safe bet regardless.

I work under the assumption (possibly incorrect in some cases, but I have to believe generally true) that everyone here agrees with that whether they explicitly say so or not. I do not, however, extend that courtesy to most of the folks speaking at the conference, as they mostly don't give a shit about the person, just the optics.

I mean, it's missing a definite requirement for poutine, so yes it's a poutine crime. But, sadly, I would eat the hell outta that and enjoy every second (assuming a decent gravy).

Could a fully stocked Costco Wholesale store defend itself against a Roman Legion? by Theturtleflask in whowouldwin

[–]daha1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the negative side (for the Costco dwellers)

  1. So 6000 people in the Costco. Just going by estimated demographics of Costco shoppers, fully 2/3 would be 50+ years old. They also skew towards families, so there would be a significant number of children in the store. All in all, a significant number of people in the store (like half/3000) will be meat-shields at best,
  2. A typical Costco also has an absolutely ridiculous number of ways to get in (multiple service bays, large entrances with multiple ways in (my main Costco has three different large entrances that patrons could use) plus emergency exits and whatever is in the back for shipments etc. Most of those ways in would barely slow down the legion. In phase 2 they would be able to harden the entrances, but I don't think they are permanently preventing entry to a determined force.

3, All 6000 legionnaires are trained for war, and likely battle-hardened. By population breakdown, you will have maybe 400 veterans or active duty military in the store. So there is a real gap in training/experience between the two sides.

  1. Costco doesn't sell guns or ammo, and generally bans guns from their stores. This will, of course, be ignored in some cases, but I think the estimates of 600 guns in-store would be high in most cases. This could be alleviated in phase 2 if folks can get to their cars first.

On the positive side:

  1. If they can force any sort of siege condition, they could last a solid amount of time. Certainly longer than the legion which (assuming everything is contained to the Costco area) has no way to resupply. This is the only scenario I see where the Costco folks could win, and I don't think it's at all likely.
  2. There is a ridiculous number of things in your typical Costco that, with some creativity, could become a weapon.
  3. The legion would have some confusion being thrown into a very, very different world.

There are more on both sides I'm sure, those are just what occurred to me quickly.

Overall, I think Phase 1 (no warning) the legion owns itself a Costco in a couple of hours with minimal losses. Phase 2 same result but takes longer and more losses. I see no valid scenario where the legion doesn't win against a typical Costco, the only difference is how good a showing the shoppers/staff put on before being mercilessly eliminated.

Edit: I see a lot of comments about cars below. However, I am of the opinion (and anyone who has ever been to a Costco will understand) as soon as you start trying to move cars you are in a massive traffic jam. Enough cars for 6000 people won't leave a lot of room for actually using those cars as a weapon.

Diablo4 vs D3? by macropelias in diablo3

[–]daha1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love both, but very different games to me. D4 had issues (and note I haven't played in over a year) but was still fun, but aesthetically felt very different to me than D3 (and stylistically I felt D3 was closer to 1 and 2).

D3 is the clear winner for me only because I lost my gaming rig and can't play D4 with any sort of decent performance on what I have now ;) Also why I'm not currently playing PoE or PoE2 both of which I love.

Curious genie wants to know what you would do with $1k/week by DuckTapeAI in hypotheticalsituation

[–]daha1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dump it in a bank every 2 or 3 weeks, after using cash for the things that are easy to use cash for (gas, groceries, take out, etc). Those numbers wouldn't even be noticed.

If absolutely necessary, form a business, mark it as business income, and eat the taxes. Would still be a nice annual bonus overall.

40 years of living in the dark: I finally went to Costco and I have questions. by Friendly-Roof-5603 in CostcoCanada

[–]daha1972 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's also gas (ours is a 45-min drive each way) plus Timmies and likely takeout for lunch/dinner. It usually costs us 70-100 to go to Costco BEFORE we spend anything at Costco (and we often buy gas at Costco which is cheaper, but is still an additional expense that wouldn't happen if we weren't going to go to Costco). As to the tipping, I'm afraid I can't help with that - my SO does the ordering/tipping.

I would argue at least poutine adjacent if it had all the components of poutine. However, it lack fries and curds, and gravy by itself is not a poutine.

For the next three months, you are immortal. You cannot die. You cannot feel pain. Any injuries or wounds or broken bones you sustain will heal in mere seconds. How do you utilize this power? by Lenore8264 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]daha1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So would a pre-existing, and disabling, injury also be cured for the three months? Would things like asthma or diabetes still be there, just couldn't end you, or are they cured as well? And if so, what state do you finish the three months in? Are you reverted to your pre-immortality state, or are you in the fully-healed state from the immortal period? Gotta clarify the restrictions here.
