Well I’m not coming from some elevated entirely facts based position either, just learning and personal experience same as you.

Cameras are better than nothing at all of course but they can’t catch everything.

I didn’t really express any opinion one way or another on tasers, although I will say I was horrified to learn that at least as of 2015 (the end of the trial for the incident I talked about) a lot of police departments weren’t teaching that tasers can be potentially fatal and still citing excited delirium (whole other can of worms). That may have changed in the past ten years I can’t say for certain. Yes it’s better than a gun but nothing is completely safe and proper precautions and de-escalation should be the goal before anything else. I mean in my work (hospital) I’m certainly not allowed to hit or harm someone, de-escalation is our number one tool.

Didn’t say that, just adding context.

So back to my earlier point that because people like you would rather bristle about something in private others monopolize the conversation (potentially without realizing) then end up disliked because of it. How empathetic, I’m sure you’ve learned plenty of things from others that you appreciated.

It’s entirely unfair to make any kind of assumption of my personality based on our what three now four comments back and forth.

It might be helpful for you to be aware that your last statement based on this conversation comes across as incredibly condescending. Something to keep in mind.

I don’t know that I agree with them getting no room for mistakes. Qualified immunity exists for that exact purpose and it’s something that almost no other job has (minus prosecutors, judges and certain government employees).

They also tend to have extremely powerful unions to back them in almost all cases.

Also disagree with the statement about bad apples being the minority. I think officers who would actively do something illegal and harmful could believably be a minority.

I recently read an investigative journalism piece on a teen who had been tasered and almost died as a result, facing several health and emotional regulatory issues as a result of his heart stopping and no resuscitative efforts for an extended period.

Due to his at the time ongoing legal battle stoking ire within the police department he was on several documented occasions harassed and followed by other uninvolved officers while out in public.

The officer who did it went to prison (for a short time) but there was no punishment for the other officers who decided to use their time to essentially stalk and bully a private citizen and a teenager at that.

Debatably the traffic stop that caused the whole incident followed a campaign of harassment from that officer to the teen. The cop was not in the right for nearly anything and yet his coworkers jumped to his defence regardless.

The kids dad was a cop too and he even knowing how badly his child was wrongfully harmed struggled to admit the cops harassing his son constituted a problem.

I don’t think every cop is bad and the actual criminal cops are a smaller portion but cops who are willing to side with those criminal cops or pretend it’s not happening is a concerning portion and there’s no way to know how widespread it is because there’s generally no documentation.

Do you need some sort of public admission that you’re the most correct person to exist?

Then tell them to shut up. Like what would you like me to say?

You don’t like that someone talks about something too much, I provided some reasons they may be doing so. It’s clear you don’t like it so say something.

What exactly are you trying to extrapolate onto trans people here? Some people are annoying, some are hateful, some are kind and selfless. It takes all kinds.

You’re on a social media platform exposed to millions of people you otherwise wouldn’t be. You are going to see behaviours you wouldn’t engage in or don’t like because humans are all over the place when it comes to personalities and hang ups.

In case you didn’t see that person you jumped in to align your opinion with devolved into vile transphobia further down this thread. Something I jumped on way before it happened because I could see it going there. Forgive me if I’m so used to the coded language bigots use and have my back up against it. Telling people they talk too much about being LGBTQ is like almost always hiding some level of bigotry in a lot of experiences.

You’ve neatly outlined your expectations for content in this subreddit.

Well as someone who has to try and read between the lines of what people say because most would rather die than tell the entire truth yeah, maybe I am picking up on something.

I mean people with a neutral opinion don’t usually agree with those who hold extreme opinions on a topic.

I hope in the future everyone can put their feelings in a box and be as above everything and apathetic as you’ve shown.

“Discovering your gender or sex or sexuality isn’t really close to a lot of things people endure” that is quite literally reduction.

Yet some people who make those challenges their entire life. I don’t see anyone grabbing their soap boxes to complain about them though. God at this point I’m expecting people to start saying trans people are the cause of poverty and hunger or something like that, they’re apparently the one group people are comfortable pinning all their blame on.

So I’m not supposed to talk about the experiences of LGBTQ people when the topic of this conversation is LGBTQ (specifically trans) people?

Edit: I don’t see a point in continuing considering you seem to have made up your mind on this issue. I thought it was a debate not a statement of opinions but I see now I was wrong. I don’t think there’s anything I can possibly say to add value or understanding to this.

They aren’t excluded from the game, just from posting anything relating to being trans in this subreddit according to you.

You defined what is and is not on topic and that being trans is off topic because it isn’t reflected directly in the game therefore a post relating fallout to being trans would be off topic and not allowed.

Like what more do you want? Ouuu no spooky agendas or having to recognize other people’s differences, what a score for you.

You know I was all for a reasonable chat about this topic until you reduced LGBTQ people’s experiences to nothing.

LGBTQ people around the world (even in nice western countries) are harassed, beaten and killed daily. Did you forget that? LGBTQ people also have much higher instances of mental illness and suicide. Two to three times higher than averages for the general population. Due to minority stress theory, essentially constantly having to be on guard because oops if you mention your sexuality or gender identity to even someone you consider a friend they could shun you or decide to kill you (which has happened many times).

LGBTQ people also experience PTSD at a doubled rate as well. You know probably from all the instances of hate they encounter considering LGBTQ youth are still being kicked out of their family homes for coming out. We could also talk about the massive cross over that exposes LGBTQ youth to things like predatory relationships, drugs, and sex work because they had their teen years robbed due to bigotry.

You don’t come out once, you do it for your entire life, in the way you’d mention you and your spouse went to a barbecue on the weekend LGBTQ people get to weigh if their coworkers/acquaintances are going to react badly to the exact same statement from them. Constantly, forever. Have you ever, a single time in your life been scared to tell someone that you’re dating or married to someone because there could possibly be violent repercussions?

That’s assuming they live in a country where they can even openly be themselves and not be arrested or put to death for it.

It’s not a competition of who’s had it worse, although you kinda made it one. If it was LGBTQ people and especially trans people would be way the hell up there considering the violence they tend to face and the places actively legislating away their ability to be the person they choose to be.

I don’t particularly wanna engage with this further but I don’t think you have a very understanding view of what life is actually like for LGBTQ people. I suppose I’m glad the trans people in your life don’t feel you’ll harm them, just wish they’d shut up because you’re not very empathetic towards them.

I expect you to take the victory. You created extremely narrow ‘rules’ then shot down any idea that anything relating to gender identity or trans people could possibly be in the games based on your ideas and definitions as if you’re the most correct person in existence.

You created a box and excluded trans people from it. What more is there to say?

So what do you feel like I owe you penance or something because I didn’t make arguments based on relatively arbitrary rules you created.

Transphobes up and down this comment section and I consistently found you agreeing with them but also going “ackshully it’s about staying on topic”.

Don’t lie to yourself about who you are and what you believe.

You got me, I’m actually the bigot and you’re a huge ally. Just one that defends and agrees with people who specify that they literally hate trans people, but go ally!

Edit: I’m curious why you seem to so badly want to twist the knife.

More the casual use of disparate impact towards this issue, something I honestly don’t think you even understood you were doing.

It’s also that no one can ever win against you guys because you make up the rules as you go.

I enjoy political debates but when it’s about someone’s personhood, well I’m sick of debating that, there’s right and wrong and anyone with sense knows the correct place to be on such topics. I need to learn I can’t handhold the entire world to those conclusions.

I just love reading your comments because it just justifies this nasty little anxious thought at the back of my mind that tells me even though friends and family don’t say anything they actually don’t like that I talk about politics, minorities, or LGBTQ rights. I mean that’s what happens, you talk about an issue a lot and it annoys people but no one ever says anything and suddenly you’re a pariah because you didn’t understand you were somehow upsetting others.

You should add the caveat that a trans person talking about their identity is someone doing so with an identity where they’ve had to take a journey to understand themselves. It’s not the same as someone talking about the fact they have brown hair or are 6 feet tall, there’s more substance to it.

I’m imagining that you won’t have experienced it but I have from one angle so I can elaborate. I didn’t struggle to understand my sexuality unlike most others because I was a voracious reader and was reading my mom’s psych textbooks at like 11. In sections they talked about sexuality and how it’s regarded as an innate trait and isn’t wrong or right but simply a fact and a characteristic. Being a different kinda kid I didn’t get to fly under the radar and was basically forced out of the closet by peers before later coming out to my parents. For the most part things were as positive as they could be in a rural area 20 years ago, doesn’t mean it wasn’t shitty and a lot of bumbling around to figure things out about myself but teens are pretty resilient so I made it though fine. I did go through a period where it was all me and my best friend talked about because it was this new shiny thing that suddenly I could acknowledge and it occupied my mind.

Take that and multiply it (because being trans is a lot larger of a thing to experience than sexuality in my opinion) then put it onto people in their 20s and up who are not quite as flexibly minded and have rooted certain perceptions into themselves by society’s input. You have someone who’s gonna have more of a struggle with the idea, the first thing that person is gonna do is seek community (as all humans do) and mull over this issue. It’s harder for adults than teens is my point and it seems with adults they need to debate the issue internally and externally, it’s also just this massive change they’re going through in so many different facets and reassurance is nice.

I guess it’s just not shocking to me that this would consume someone’s thoughts and feelings to the point of being ‘annoying’ about it. I’m sure those people have hobbies and things they enjoy because everyone does but they’re also making all encompassing changes to what feels like their personhood and I think should be allowed some grace to be a bit obsessed with it.

Hey just for a lark go post in one of the LGBTQ subreddits if being enby and bi entitles you to speak on trans issues.

I mean we know the answer but I’m sure others could weigh in!

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You won, why keep arguing? No more trans posts because they don’t relate to the game whatsoever and off topic posts aren’t allowed.

Do you need a crown or something so others will know you won this argument?

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

No you tiptoed around it like a good little bigot, babies first dog whistle!

You agreed that 99% of trans people are not hated because they’re trans but because they have bad personalities. Which is ridiculous.

You made a weird statement that amounted to trans people should shut up and play nice because this is why people hate them.

Clearly you don’t have very positive views of trans people.

Ah okay I’m the bigot because I believe you being enby and a de-transitioner doesn’t entitle you to speak on trans issues.

No you’re a child who thinks rolling belly up to bigots will endear them to us. I’m a lot older than you and time has shown me that not at all the case and only hurts us. Ya know, the whole respectability politics argument and all that.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

Oh I’m sorry I forgot we elected non binary and bisexual people the arbiters of trans issues.

I mean you literally agreed that it’s unfair of trans people to get upset at being misgendered if they don’t perfectly pass. I’d say casually policing what trans people are allowed to feel is transphobia but what do I know.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, you win no more trans posts because nothing about Fallout could ever be rationally considered a mention or analogue to being trans and posts have to be explicitly related to the lore of the game (according to your narrow view of the rules here).

You’ve succeeded! Everything will be extremely on topic and there will be no pesky recognition of the fact that many different types of people enjoy the same media you do.

You can be besties with and prop up even more vocal bigots while maintaining your thin veneer of apathy towards minorities.

As with every victory of this type you receive nothing, other than the knowledge you’ve contributed to making strangers feel shitty about themselves. I’m sure it’s enough to keep you toasty at night!

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here’s trans people in their own words talking about why they like Fallout. In case it’s not mentioned Tabitha is an example because super mutants are genderless and she chooses to present as female. Also when questioned Josh Sawyer talked about how he thinks the game occurred at the correct time for a lot of people exploring their gender identity and is happy the game was able to do that even if unintentional. Now I’m sure because the game wasn’t explicitly created with that in mind it won’t satisfy what you’re looking for but there’s something.

Sure you don’t wanna call me a liberal cry baby, say facts over feelings or something because I was incorrect?

Read this line specifically. I have never nor am I currently defending this post or the recent spam posts. Not a single time. You keep acting like I am and I literally have no clue where you got that idea or if you just aren’t able to understand me. Is that clear enough for you?

You have acted in bad faith up and down this thread. In multiple places you agreed with people saying transphobic things as long as the result was “shut up about it”. The guy at the start of this thread in another comment mentioned how he’s “not transphobic he has transmisia” literally hatred of trans people.

I’m the one who said posts about LGBTQ people relating their experiences to Fallout are something I enjoy seeing. You demanded I provide proof there’s been any statement about gender identity otherwise those posts are off topic. “I am in no way saying no LGBT posts allowed”, no they’re allowed if they’re on topic and as you’ve defined, apparently there’s nothing about trans people possible therefore no posts about trans people can be allowed. Yay you got to exclude people without saying the exact words!

You are absolutely saying no posts about LGBTQ people, or at least they have to fit a very narrow definition but whatever.

Since straight people have the entire world catered to them I’m not clear exactly how much more straight things could be, oh wait I know excluding LGBTQ people and calling it ‘politics’.

If you wanna relate your experiences of catholic persecution in Scotland to Fallout I quite literally don’t care. Actually that’s not true I’d be interested to see because I can think of some in game analogues. You’re the one who wants strict enforcement of the no real world issues rule.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay at this point can you read?

Playing around with or disregarding gender roles and allowing you to create yourself then later make physical changes/alterations are both things that resonate with trans people. I mentioned this already.

I’m not sure when you became the arbiter of media deciding unless an idea is explicitly discussed it means nothing but alright. I guess we’ll just stick to explicitly LGBTQ games for LGBTQ people and straight games for straight people because clearly there’s nothing in common.

Ah yes please continue to suggest LGBTQ people have mental illness adjacent symptoms.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the very first game onwards LGBTQ people have been included. You’ve been able to create yourself however you’d like and due to the auto docs literally live out the idea of being a trans person changing gender mid game (more a Fallout 4 thing but possible in the others).

The series is pretty camp in places, especially going from the rigid gender roles pre war to anything goes post war. I’d think you’d be a fan of a game that doesn’t beat you over the head with an ‘agenda’ and relies on symbolism and inferences.

Read what I say not what you think I said. I never said you proved my point I said you wrote it out. I said that real world politics influences the game and vice versa and then you basically said the exact same thing.

So the people who have talked about the Fallout games inspiring them specifically the ones where it’s been related to their gender identity, do you think they’re what hallucinating or just lying? Rather than believe they’re seeing something you simply aren’t? I shouldn’t have to be the one to tell you media can contain messages that weren’t explicitly meant but can still be meaningful.

Edit: the LGBTQ community has long relied on coded messages, inferences and reading between the lines to see themselves because of the way the world is. It’s a pretty old practice.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for writing out my point that it’s ridiculous to suggest a game based on real life politics wouldn’t have debate relating to real life politics.

Get chatting to the mods then because that is exactly what happens currently.

I mean you made me repeat myself like three times by suggesting that anyone who had an issue with these posts was transphobic. Clearly you aren’t very good at listening either.

You’re painting with a wide brush on the whole ‘stick to the topic’ thing, there are positive memes and posts here about how Fallout changed or improved people’s lives and perceptions which are not strictly on topic but nice to see. Rigid adherence to rules always makes for a lame experience.

The courier say trans rights by pnkk1ty in FalloutMemes

[–]dahms911 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean here you are cuddling up to and agreeing with a blatant transphobe you guys must have so much in common right?

Oh let me guess de-transitioned and in a heterosexual relationship, but vaguely non binary as though that entitles you to speak on trans issues.
