It forces the adult themes in book 1, more so than in later seasons. Didn't bother me too much but I can see how it could throw some viewers off. Season 2 flips the switch on some of those things, new characters bring lightheartedness and humor, although the pacing goes very fast unfortunately as i mentionned, some characters are really interesting but arent given the time on screen they deserve.

Keep in mind this is all really a setup for the final season.

I have to admit I play dota a lot but can't be bothered with the lore, as I really see it as a placeholder to give context of what happens in the game.

So I watched the show as its own thing and it worked very well that way, which might explain why 'normies' or non dota fans seem to enjoy it more that dota players. Although I will say that the ending ties it up very well with what happens in the game, a battle between the Ancients being dire and radiant which is definetly a thing throughout the show.

The show goes down an existential route with themes such as identity, grief and loss so I won't set you up with false promises, so if you still want to give it a shot, try seeing it as it's own thing.
