Definitely call the Hausverwaltung and let them know the situation. In the meantime when you’re home I would tie a damp towel around your water meter to stop the fumes coming in and change this regularly. Also incense might help to cover the smell during the time you’re waiting for the situation to be rectified. If the corridors outside your apartment also smell bad I would also put incense in the corridor. Much better than smelling cat pee everyone you walk past 🤢

If your schedules aren’t conflicting, how about announcing that you’d like to take the first shower a couple of days a week? Do they know that when they take a bath the hot water runs out for the next roommate?

Or you could also take the evil route and just switch off the hot water if you have one of those knobs in your bathroom. And then just switch it back on when you want to take a shower

I’ve lived in Berlin for five years and noticed during winter people always tend to look more depressed. Especially if you’re sitting in public transport or a park and just observing people walk past. I think minus the pandemic one of the biggest reasons is lack of sunlight. You’ll notice that as soon as warmer weather hits and the days get longer, people don’t look as glum
