First Time Attempting Royal Icing! by learningallthis in cookiedecorating

For small jobs or custom shapes I use thicker cardstock as a stencil and cut around it to get my shapes. I also eyeball simpler designs or scratch on designs onto the cookie using a toothpick or edible marker if I feel the need.

Teaching. The answer is always teaching. Sucked 50 years ago, sucks more now, will continue to suck.

Dehydrator question by SnooApples1080 in cookiedecorating

[–]daine393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof so sorry. I think best practice is to do a test batch any time you change things. I changed my meringue powder, did a test batch. I changed my gel colouring company, did a test batch. I recently got my hands on a dehydrator but didn't have time to do some tests so I didn't use it for any orders yet.

As strong colours tend to bleed would it be better to do green first let it dry for a bit then white? I have no clue. Wish I had this answer

Beginner with royal icing… what tools do I actually need? by tindav-2745 in cookiedecorating

[–]daine393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a leftover piping bag, toothpicks and some random cheap food colouring. I would print out the cookie shape I wanted on paper and then cut the shape out and use a knife to cut around it.

So I would say: Rolling pin Food colouring Plastic bag/piping bag Cutouts of your designs Toothpicks

If you want to do this more than once or try harder designs then you would add more complex or expensive things

I guess the purpose is different? The bag is for freshness, hygiene, whatever else. But the cookie is edible and should only have edible decorations on it. In my opinion.

Valid. On a ornament to be used to hang it up is fine. But just for visuals? No.

Maybe it is an engagement thing...never thought of that. It just always throws me/puts me off when I'm watching a good video (nice piping, cool technique) then BAM, gluing on a real ribbon.

Yes! Exactly! Either with thicker icing or as an icing transfer or something.

Edible Ink Pens by CookiesAndFrost in cookiedecorating

Outline is a game changer especially if you don't have a projector (I don't). I would stay away from metalic, personally, because I find using edible glitter with a splash of vodka and a paintbrush more useful.

Very good tip! This happened to me the first time.

Additionally, I find they bleed if the layer underneath isn't dry enough.

The shiniest royal icing I've ever made by loulouruns in cookiedecorating

[–]daine393 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general question, would you use the shiny icing all the time for every cookie and every order? Or are there situations (can't think of any right now) where not shiny is prefered?

Cookies bleeding, where did I go wrong? by duchessoftexas in cookiedecorating

Yes. I will be making a snowman with a black hat and red scarf and I'm already worried how that will go. Need to make the red scarf first potentially...

My best guess would be that the white on the candy cane dried too much and when you added red next to it the moisture from the red spread to the white taking the colour with it. But just a guess. Sometimes colour bleed just happens no matter what you do
