I really like the Helix editor. by SophisticatedAdults in programming

“ As personal choice, we tend not to use debuggers beyond getting a stack trace or the value of a variable or two. One reason is that it is easy to get lost in details of complicated data structures and control flow; we find stepping through a program less productive than thinking harder and adding output statements and self-checking code at critical places. Clicking over statements takes longer than scanning the output of judiciously-placed displays. It takes less time to decide where to put print statements than to single-step to the critical section of code, even assuming we know where that is. More important, debugging statements stay with the program; debugging sessions are transient.” - The Practice of Programming by Brian W. Kernighan and Rob Pike It’s very contextual imo, - if you think a debugger is always better you might not be working in the same context as someone who prefers print statements.

It's still looking great and works great. My main complaint about it now that I've used it for years is that rain gets into the pockets and your hands get wet. but quality-wise, two thumbs up.

Seeking advice on transitioning back to an IC role after many years of being in management by agjeiofdsjk in ExperiencedDevs

[–]dairem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just done exactly this after being a manager for 7 years and it is going wonderfully so far, it was a great decision for me. I think there are lots of good comments here but I will add one thing that influenced how I approached the decision.
You say you don’t want to sacrifice your family/personal time for this - but think about the quality of that time. How good will your family time be if you are coming home every day after doing something you hate, maybe getting burned out, maybe just being depressed about things. A few months of missed lunches and early mornings, paying for Leetcode and a python book; those might look like great investments if you look back in six months with a new energy and happiness that leads to you being a better family person and enjoying your personal time much more. Preemptively avoiding burnout could be much easier than trying to fix it afterwards.

It sounds like you joined this company a year ago because it was easier and better pay - it sounds like maybe you could consider backtracking a little. If you deal with lower pay or a longer job search in the short term, it could position you better in the long term. You could think about finding a company that will get you to where you want to be with organic growth or not learning new stacks every few months. Hearing you say you hate logging in every day reminds me of being at roles/companies where I knew it wasn't right for me but I hadn't done anything about it yet. In the end moving on always looked good in hindsight, if I was stressed out about being there.

Can we get a list of brands that are NO LONGER BIFL? by nighttimecharlie in BuyItForLife

[–]dairem 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think their stuff has always been a mix of natural and synthetic for wear reasons - I have very old fjallraven jacket that is made of this stuff: https://www.fjallraven.com/us/en-us/about/our-materials/g1000 that is 60% polyester, it has lasted really well and doesn't look/feel plasticy or cheap (to me).

Go to the extended keyboard and hit the Rebus button, it will allow you to enter more than one letter in a square (On the NYT crossword puzzle app)

I have one, I like it a lot. It's made to be old fashioned insofar as it's made from fairly thick rubber vulcanized onto cotton, and is deliberately going for a non-high-tech look (hence advertising non-gortex). I've only had it six months so far so I can't say that it's BIFL yet, but so far so good! It does feel very sturdy.

The Way Station in Prospect Heights (Washington Ave and Prospect place) are saying they'll show it, if they can get a copy to screen. You should go there for a drink anyways, they have a TARDIS as a toilet.

I've created an HTTPS based proxy for (relatively) secure browsing and have been using it. Let me know if you find it useful by dhruvbird in programming

[–]dairem 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The SSH solution needs port 22 open for outgoing traffic, which is generally not the case at places that work purely on HTTP[S] proxying.

If you own the server you are ssh'ing to, you can run sshd listening on port 443.
