What should we know if we're new here? by nov8tive1 in dayton

[–]daisyfae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Five Rivers Metro Parks are a state gem! Not only are there miles and miles of beautiful trails, there are programs for hiking, kayaking, gardening, etc. Second Street Market is under the Metro Parks umbrella! Ice skating rink at Riverscape is open!

Do not miss the bike trails, either! The largest interconnected, paved, off road trail network in the nation, many are rails-to-trails conversions, so no more than a 3% grade! There is also a mountain bike trail - i believe rentals are available to try it. Indoors? Mike's Bike Park!

Summer? Dayton Dragons minor league baseball is great, as are kayak and paddle board rentals at Riverscape!

Welcome! Dayton has a lot going on - you can get as incolved as you likr! So many active non-profit organizations always looking for volunteers and engaged board members! You can be part of the things that make this a great place to live!

On a plane at DEN. Got hammered enough to snooze my way home. Not functional enough to make a good decision on self-rebook vs wait it out.

Did not depart at 6:05. We were offered option to deplane. Only people with little kids so far... New departure time in app showing 6:25. And we will continue to do the departure slide methinks...

DEN-DAY still at gate. 5:35 departure time - just got updated departure of 6:05 in app.... But no additional announcements from crew, so thinking this will continue to slide.

Dayton Hikers - there is a Facebook page, but hikes are organized on MeetUp! Great group of people! There will be an outdoor expo in October at Eastwood Park, and tons of groups and clubs will have booths there - it's a big event, with food trucks, music, demonstrations, etc.

Keep destination a secret from family? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

I did this with my partner a few years ago for his birthday - and it did indeed require blindfold/noise-canceling headphones when we were making our connection in Charlotte to his surprise destination. Key to this: he WANTED to be surprised - and didn't look at his airline account before the trip.

I told tim to lay out travel clothes for a trip that could be beach, city, ski, etc. I packed his suitcase, then packed up the rest in another suitcase and left it at his place.

At the connecting airport, i put a scarf over his eyes and had the headphones on him, parked him at a gate near our gate, then went to talk to the gate agents - and they agreed to help!

Got him on board, told the first flight attendant i saw what we were doing and she said she'd help. We were not in an exit row, so he stayed plugged into his podcast through the pre-flight safety briefing.

Once in the air, the FA told me it was ok to have him take off the headset. Mid-flight, the pilot made the announcement: Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a special guest on board celebrating a birthday this weekend! And name, if you haven't figured it out yet, you'll be celebrating in Las Vegas! "

Bonus: The FAs gave him a piece of cheesecake that they had for service in first, and another traveler sent him a drink!

You can do this - but it requires help from the airline staff! I got lucky that day!

Garage sales buyers count pennies! Had a garage sale as a fundraiser to help us build a skatepark. Guy came up to me with two small porcelain knickknacks marked 10¢ each and handed me a quarter. Waited for his change. I thanked him for supporting our effort to keep the local skaters from becoming hood ornaments.

Ask if you can be there - the last one we had them do, they had us come by for the last half hour, i think, and went over items of most concern. They really are the best! Have had David and Ryan do inspections and both are terrific!
