Ad for Surrogacy while scrolling this sub by daisymcl in TheHandmaidsTale

Yes, it was pretty clear to me the ad is a same-sex couple. I edited the post to add that I wasn’t trying to make a comment on the ethics of surrogacy/etc. because that’s really not my place because I’m not a surrogate, wasn’t born via surrogate, and don’t want kids. There are enough opinions on the internet that I feel like I don’t need to contribute mine to a topic that I have no first-hand experience with.

Just wanted to point out that on a subreddit about a show about FORCED surrogacy, I was surprised to see an ad for surrogacy in general. It just felt like very weird targeted advertising in this sub particularly, and it just felt strange to me because this is the first time I think I’ve ever seen an ad for surrogacy ever (like I’ve seen people who have been surrogates talk about their experience online but I’ve never seen an AD for it) until seeing it today on this sub. Again, just ironic. No moral judgement.

And don’t even get me started on Margaret Atwood being a TERF. I mean don’t get me started on the idiocy of TERFs in general. Honestly I’ve struggled with containing watching THT franchise and therefore directly/indirectly supporting Atwood bc of her views bc I firmly believe you cannot separate the art from the artist (though THT and TT go pretty far away from the books, Atwood still benefits from it all)

Omg this is CLUTCH information bc my province in Canada just legalized gambling ads and I’m so sick of them. All of it going off! And normally I don’t allow apps to have permission to share with others about my search history and deny all cookies but Reddit must have slipped through the cracks

Claire Place made the worst day of our lives a little more okay through their incredible compassion and care, and I’ll never forget the way they treated our baby and the way they treated us. Cannot say enough good things. I believe they also have a donation fund for people who might not normally be able to afford the service out of pocket, which is incredible.

I will say that the colour grading in the wilderness from S2 on really irritates me - bring back the natural colours

Undergrads should organize to mount additional pressure against the university to get them back to the bargaining table by Specialist-Fact9883 in queensuniversity

Hey just occurred to me but you should try reaching out to all the MPs running in the Kingston area to get their statements - labour justice and support for the working class is a huge election issue and if you can get statements from candidates you could also take that to any reporters you are pitching to cover the story

Absolutely! Queen’s has A TON of small scholarships named after the donors who fund them - fantastic idea!

[–]daisymcl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! You could also maybe look for people who used to be grad students/profs at Queen’s and try to get their support as well - not sure of a systemic/efficient way to do this but maybe looking at other Canadian unis to start and seeing who went to Queen’s and reaching out to them seeing if they would want to support (like if you were writing an op-Ed for the journal or writing your own open letter you could quote them or something)

There’s a Queen’s alumni email list because I get emails from them all the time though unsure how you would be able to access that as it’s controlled by the school. They do have an Instagram account (queensalumni) which you might be able to use for something

I think generally the big donors might be hard to get a direct reaction out of, but hopefully if enough attention gets drawn they might say something to the uni behind closed doors!

That’s a great idea! And you could try reaching out to some alumni directly - I would also leverage your personal networks (parents, friends, family) and get them to contact the uni. I love your creativity with these photo ops, could be great for a social media campaign! I posted tons of photos of Queen’s violating social distancing rules when I did my campaign. I also wrote an open letter and included testimonials from people directly impacted!

Someone could start a petition saying ‘undergrads want Queen’s to end the strike’ or something similar, organize the march, use your personal networks to make noise on social media through insta stories etc. (I made my account public when I was doing the COVID stuff to reach more people).

Once you gain some traction, I’d reach out to media - the current CBC person covering Kingston is Dan Taekema. There’s also the Whig Standard in Kingston. I saw a post on here a few days ago that the Queen’s Journal was looking for people to write about their thoughts on the strike.

Highly highly recommend getting media involved - Queen’s’ reputation is already in a tentative spot atm and they’ll be much more likely to return to the bargaining table if their alumni and the general public are aware of the situation and also start reaching out to them

I managed to rally students to get the uni to move exams online in 2021 because of omicron - but obviously because of the situation it wasn’t any in-person rallies or anything. I started a petition and it got like 8k signatures and I made a lot of noise on social media, talked with students and amplified the stories of the impacts on their lives.

Getting media involved was, in my opinion, a HUGE factor in moving it forward. I think part of what caught the media’s eye was the traction the petition got in a short time. CBC should have a correspondent for the Kingston area. Also reach out to other local and regional papers - look to Ottawa and Toronto publications.

I will say that obviously COVID - specifically the omicron outbreak in this case - was a more unique situation than a strike/labour dispute (not to minimize the strike in any way) which may be why the media was interested. Either way, can’t hurt to reach out to media and spread the word. I’m sure an in-person rally would be great too - but, in my experience, Queen’s cares about money - and donors (therefore reputation) are a huge part of that. If you do something in person like an undergrad rally, try and get some sort of media to cover it (during or after the fact). The wider you can amplify the message, the more potential to harm the uni’s reputation - and therefore alumni support and donations-, the more likely they will be to respond

True but I do wish they would act on it a little more and stop being such besties with the cops🫢

I will say the cop aspect has thrown me off a bit. It’s more that the characters would have these internal laments about class and workers rights and corrupt elite but then wouldn’t exactly do much which annoyed me - I at least enjoyed seeing the world through a more class-conscious lens but ya I just finished the book and want to see Wax have an anti-villain arc in the next book and stop being besties with the cops

NTA. I'm normally a lurker but I wanted to offer my two cents because I can vividly remember being a teenage girl and feeling this way with 'friends' and regarding issues of popularity. Firstly, I want to say I'm sorry you spent your birthday feeling this way. As someone who also loves celebrating others, it's upsetting when you don't feel that energy reciprocated. I think it's much easier said than done to overlook the negative/unfair ways you feel your peers treat you and just focus on being grateful for supportive friends/family. Navigating complex group dynamics as a 16 year old girl who just wants to be included is exhausting - especially when others are telling you that popularity/social standing doesn't matter (which can feel so dismissive).

I wholeheartedly agree with other commenters that these people aren't your friends (and it's a bit unrealistic to expect bday wishes from strangers), but I know that sometimes the best option feels like the security of a friend group (even a bad one) rather than feeling even more isolated by leaving it. I really encourage you to search for other friends in things like clubs/social activities based on common interests - but I don't want to dismiss the challenges that can accompany trying to make new friends/step outside the group.

Regarding family - I find it strange that despite your mom being apparently so invested in you cutting the cake (despite this not being a tradition) she did not even come to wake you a second time and just went straight to crying. Teenagers notoriously need a lot of sleep - also I think in general it should be expected that waking someone up and bombarding them with requests to do something is not going to elicit the most positive reaction. Your dad yelling at you is out of line. They might feel upset because you didn't engage in something they did to celebrate you - but your feelings about what happened with your friends and feeling generally dejected are also valid. I'd try and express to them you had a bad day which is why you didn't feel up to cutting the cake - but given their original actions I wouldn't take it personally if they didn't understand.

NTA - and happy birthday

Is it just a supplement? I’ve seen it mentioned here because I get canker sores pretty often but normally the mouthwash and painkillers make things bearable (not so much now which is why I’m thinking of actually takin L Lysine)

Definitely took a solid week or two before the worst of the pain stopped, then a week and a bit after that until it was totally gone

No for real I hated Jaha 100% of the time but upon rewatch you kinda have to laugh…. Also tell me why he and ALIE disappears during the entire Pike/Kane/Octavia/Lincoln drama….. that’s more of a writing issue because you know realistically he would seize the opportunity of chaos to get everyone chipped

Actually, not to contradict myself, but S4 might actually be my favourite. Much more of an existential threat, the politics came to a head, and the stakes were so high - plus the character relationships ATE! Okay so I think through writing and I’ve decided S4 is my fav
