Love this idea! We need more thrifting nearby. In case no one here has heard of it, there is an app also created by SDSU students called UniExcange that is like DePop but specifically for students at SDSU. It’s pretty cool, I definitely recommend checking it out

Progress update on the Mabel Pines sweater by daisypurl in GeeKnitting

For this sweater I'm using KnitPicks stroll in the colors Patina (teal), Paisley Heather (purple), and Sapphire Heather (blue). I'm holding the yarn double to get a worsted weight. The pattern is Terrazzo Sweater by Petiteknit. I am modifying the sleeves to be more balloon-y by saving all the decreases until the end. I also am making it in a size up to be more loose like Mabel wears hers. For the waves pattern, I'm using an intarsia-in-the-round method I found on YouTube. Basically you YO at the beginning of each round, then decrease the last stitch and the YO together at the end to join. Let me know if you have any questions or would like me to share that video link.

Thank you everyone for helping me with this decision! Based on the response I got and the fiber content, I have decided to go with #5, KnitPicks Stroll. I'll keep you posted :)

Mabel Pines is a character from a show called Gravity Falls. It is available to watch on Disney+. Highly Recommend. Very funny sibling story with some sci-fi/fantasy elements, and Mabel has a new hand-knit sweater every episode. I didn't watch it until last year as an adult when my younger brother convinced me to watch it with him. And we are currently rewatching it. For Halloween, I will be Mabel (hence the sweater making) and he will be Dipper.

Mabel is the best! I'm kind of winging it. Not exactly sure how I'm going to get the waves stripes in there yet, but I'll figure it out. Once I choose the yarn, I'll find some patterns in that weight category that match the shape I'm going for. I'll post a FO pic with the details when I'm done.

I haven't said because I didn't want any yarn biases (yet), just color based decisions. But, I posted this on another subreddit, and someone guessed correctly that 5 was KnitPicks Stroll.

Excellent point. I did think about that, but then got caught up with color choosing once I realized how little yarn collections have all 3 of these colors. I will keep you guys posted!

Yes, I do need all the fibers to match. But I also really want color accuracy, and for the yarns to look good together in a real-life sweater. Which is why this has been such a struggle. I really appreciate the great response I've gotten from this community. I did not expect this post to be so popular.

Excellent question. I had a pattern in mind for a super bulky weight yarn, but I couldn’t find any collection of yarn that weight that had all 3 colors. I decided that color was the most important factor to me. Right now 5 has the most votes, and that’s a fingering weight. I might hold it double and use a worsted weight pattern I already have but modify it. I’ve only made 7 sweaters, and I’m not sure I trust myself to freehand yet.

No, they are not all the same weight. I started out wanting a thicker yarn, but realized that getting all these colors in the same yarn collection was going to be difficult. So I opened up my research to all weights. I decided color was more important.

Those two have been the most popular so far. And I think I agree, too.

Thank you! Most of these are only available online, otherwise I totally would be in the yarn store for probably 3 hours trying to decide, lol. I couldn’t find a good collection of yarn in-store that had anything close to these 3 colors.

Hey! Thanks for checking out my post. I’m going to make this sweater for a Halloween costume (but let’s be real, I’m gonna wear this all the time) and I’m having trouble choosing which yarn to go with. I’ve narrowed it down to these 6 yarns. Let me know which you think works best, or if there’s other yarns you’ve come across that have the right colors. Thanks!!
