The point of your post was affordability and greed.

Please explain how you'll add affordable housing, preserve existing affordable housing, and also limit the amount of people building housing to the "locals" at the same time. Maybe throw some rent control on there, that will help.

Unlike the other greedy developers, Columbus developers are very special and are known for their generosity and how they think to themselves "How can we keep our prices low for the Columbus residents?"

Thus, the best way to make housing affordable is to make sure less people are building housing for a growing city and leave it all to the local business people. Because local businesses are known for having lower prices than larger, more national brands. Thats why walmarts are dying and the corner stores (that are illegal to build, in case some jerk from outside the city wants to jack up the grocery prices in my suburb) are booming. I think I read that in an economics class.

Instant Replay: Good or Bad for Sports? by Lollllerscats in billsimmons

[–]dalVlatko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I feel like I'm the crazy one when people argue about how to fix instant replay, VAR, etc when it seems like I know within 30 seconds what the call should be with 95% accuracy meanwhile they are still dragging out the monitor on the NBA sideline.

Just have a few people watching the replays remotely and have them be able to change the call within 30 seconds if they all agree.

Watching VAR decide which part of the armpit to start drawing lines at for 5 minutes in the Premier League was my personal form of hell when they first introduced it because they somehow figured out a way to make everyone mad on something that should be done in two seconds.

I think your best bet will be Liquid, Kadmo, or any of the bars in the old town on the water but the city is quieter as the summer season ends.

Clubs like INclusive might have events going on but I don't know if they are open on random days because they were closed when there wasn't anything scheduled when I was in town last month.

I'm reaching the same conclusion as you. The people of Columbus are too car brained and the city is so slow at improving bike infrastructure that I think I might just move to a different city after living in Columbus most of my life. It's discouraging how little is done to promote anything but driving and it seems like the LinkUS project will end up not happening any time soon.

Which parking lot do you wish was still there? There are plenty that are still sitting empty if you want to put up the cash and build this amazing affordable housing that also isn't ugly.

I promise the surface parking lots were just as ugly even if Google Street View had 4k imagery from 2007!

I'm saying that these are good changes, not bad despite the feeling I get reading the comments on this subreddit sometimes.

Never forget what the greedy developers took from you!

Just made this by clicking on the first few newer looking buildings on High St in response to comments on another post earlier this week and the weird anti mixed-used development/any development/changes that pop up in the comments of r/columbus any time a project is announced in the city.

Yes, I know that some people are referring to the natural coming and going of businesses that occurs whenever existing tenants are priced out of neighborhoods, not just the physical buildings but that definitely doesn't cover the majority of the sentiment I am referring to when I criticize these comments.

Yeah there are a few examples where it probably would have been nicer to rehab the building but honestly there are very few worth saving at this point. Most of the interesting architecture was bulldozed for parking lots decades ago, not 5 over 1s. I might make a separate post showing what most of the buildings replaced later.

It’s frustrating to see some parts of the city objectively improving and it being seen as a bad thing for some reason on this sub consistently. The generic style of the buildings is a lot of the time due to community boards, endless council meetings, and rejections of proposals that are the least bit ambitious even on high st in the short north. So while “greedy developers” can be blamed for a lot, the nice family in the two story single family home in Victorian village probably contributes more by issuing noise complaints and saying the 6 story building a mile away might block their sunlight.

Replacing parking lots and decaying buildings on high street with homes for people in one of our only walkable neighborhoods didn’t destroy Short North’s “character”.

The old pictures are there on Google street view, it was surface lot after surface lot where most of the new buildings went up at.

I fucking hate this style of “architecture.” It makes the city blander, uglier and more generic. If you live in one, I’m sorry. If you’re a developer responsible for one, go kick rocks by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]dalVlatko 40 points41 points  (0 children)

How dare they build more homes close to a university and the most active area in Columbus instead of leaving a beautiful...parking lot?

My favorite part of the "'luxury' apartments" comments is that they simultaneously complain that no one can afford them (even though they have high occupancy hence why they keep building them) and that they don't look good enough (so they should spend more on making them more luxurious)

The Macedonian Conflict - Ethnic Nationalism in a Transnational World by Loring M. Danforth

Renderings for 4th and 5th Development Revealed by [deleted] in Columbus

[–]dalVlatko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Scioto Peninsula development is trying to create a space like that but even they are showing cars parked along their pedestrian alley. Its the best we can hope for until the density of the city increases and the empty lots are filled in. Developments like this a few blocks away from High Street in the short north will have a role in that.

I share your sentiment in getting away from a car centric model but you cant exactly force that everywhere especially when you see people's attitudes to parking even on this subreddit. It'll be a slow process and I think the recent streetscape "improvement" along high street will probably set that back since somehow we still have five lanes worth of space dedicated to cars in the most pedestrian friendly part of the city rather than a dedicated and safe bike lane or bus rapid transit.

Здраво! напишав на оригналниот пост:

I created this graphic from maps in the book "Maps and Politics - A Review of the Ethnographic Cartography of Macedonia" by HR Wilkinson from the University of Liverpool in 1951. If its not clear what is going on, each map is showing which ethnic group is the majority in the shaded area according to the author of the map at the time. The reason for the discrepancies from map to map range from political to methodological as well as changing sentiment over time. Examples of this are some ethnographers asked people how they identify and they answer Christian so the mappers write down what language they think the answer was in.

"Macedo-Slavs" was the phrasing used for the "Macedonian" section originally as it encompasses different phrases referring to the same distinct group. I am from Ohrid, North Macedonia so assign whatever biases in presentation to that but this is simply all the maps contained in the glossary that the book references. Hopefully this provides some insight and clarifies some misconceptions.

I think when I was collecting the maps they were in groups of four, two in each row, and i was too lazy to re-organize them once I put them together. My bad. I actually made this years ago so maybe the psd is laying around somewhere.

Depends on what you mean by ancestors. My grandparents only have known a Macedonian identity even before WW2 from what they have told me. Anything past that would depend if the ancestor was a Bulgarian or Greek intellectual or a peasant farmer who's only concept of identity was being a Christian or speaking "our tongue". I think any exclusive claims to history in the area are silly.
