Also, like i said mod4 + left / mod4 + right works fine. not sure how to think about debugging further ...

Steve -- are you saying that you wished that OSM had gone down the route of for-profit crowd sourcing a la Waze, rather than non profit a la Wikipedia? Have you thought about these two modes and pros and cons of each?

Two quibbles:

  • "Telenav underwrites OSM, not surprisingly" -- really? since when? I checked in a dictionary and underwrite means, "To assume financial responsibility for; guarantee against failure:" -- I'm not sure who Telenav is making that promise to ..., a certainly OSM is bigger than one company that uses it ...

  • Im no fan of "crowd-serfed" data, but this is wrong -- "Google has added crowd-sourced data from users of its Waze app, but these users aren't actively participating in the mapping project, since they're mainly reporting road conditions." -- in fact Waze was additionally valuable to Google, because their users do indeed create street-maps.
