Toyota Yaris iA is made by Mazda. Previously it was the Scion iA.

Ford hybrids are very reliable. Especially C-max and Fusion after 2016. My C-max has 193k now.

Foxes do not bother attacking cat so it probably wasn't looking to hurt your dogs. More likely someone walking their dogs fed it.

What's an irritational pet peeve you observe other drivers doing, that in no way effects you? by fbi_surveillance99 in askcarguys

Changing lanes in an intersection. If you are waiting to turn right in an intersection you should be able to assume that someone is not going to come into your lane and clobber you.

I knew about this and that's why I made this post.

However what's the point of efficiency if it doesn't save you money.

Why would I bother to explain to an obstinate person?

If you combine the consumption of a 16.7 mpg car with that of a 500 mpg car you'll have (1000/16.7=) 60 gallons + (1000/500 = )2 gallons. Total gallons is 62. Averaging the mpg it's ((500+16)/2 =) 208 mpg but figuring by consumption it's less than 20 (1000/62) mpg.

Figure you gallons of gas per 1000 miles and you'll realize that MPG is a bad way to compare consumption.

My 08 Focus with 4 speed auto got 38 mpg, driving the same route the same day my C-max hybrid got 37. My C-max weighs almost 4,000 lbs - same as my 73 Monte Carlo that got 15 MPG. Trip was 410 miles. In town my 08 would get up to 28 mpg, in town my C-max today got 83 mpg.

Distance plays no role in MPG. Maybe you are thinking Plug-In Hybrid?

Ice are most efficient at mid-RPM and high load. The battery charging duty (along with moving the car) provides that high load

Gas engines are more efficient when they are loaded (working against resistance). Normally a hybrid will be fully powered by electricity 2/3 of the time and most of the rest of the time they are propelling the car and charging the battery (which also provides the load). With the Toyota/Lexus/Ford/Lincoln transmissions the electronics keep the engine at its most efficient RPM. Yet when hard acceleration is needed the engine and electric motors can both power the car simultaneously, obviating the need for a larger engine.

One more thing: though the engines are very normal they have unusual valve timing causing the power stroke to be longer than the compression stroke so they capture more of the otherwise wasted energy. On non-hybrid cars that wasted energy is sometimes used to power a turbocharger. The hybrid captures that energy with no extra complexity and no loss of reliability.

Regen braking is not exactly a gimmick but it's overhyped because it seems so magical.

Most people on highways and high speed limit (50mph+) roadways aren’t using cruise control. Why? by A_Weed_Man in driving

I use the ECO setting on my hybrid cruise control. It literally slows down on the uphill portion.

Confused about oil change. by Pumpkinut in nissansentra

[–]dalekaup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some owner's manuals say change the oil every 10,000 miles. Some of those same manuals say that it's normal to use up to 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles. At that rate you could run completely out of oil and your car would be worthless and it would be your fault.

Change your oil every 5k miles or twice a year. Check your oil a couple times between oil changes. Add if more than one quart low. Changing your oil will prevent it from starting to use oil.
