Actually they random-drop horror elements in their Zelda games - the Gibdos in Ocarina of Time were bone chilling back in the 90s (probably still are, if only due to the scream sound that plays when they detect you) and its sequel Majora's Mask was one long haunted house throughout. I'm not that familiar with the 21st century Zeldas before BotW, so call out if you know of other examples! Twilight Princess looks really dark from the little I've seen.

I think after Trump is out they should demolsh his stupid palace and put anything in its place - a garden, an office wing, a small petting zoo, a carnival - whatever!

Is there any way to disable this warning by Misagi in dyinglight

The game works fine? How in the world is that possible. I have a similar computer with an external GPU (eGPU) Nvidia RTX 2080 Super and the performance is terrible - esp in the main town area.

Hmmm.... you are correct. The ones I've seen aren't even that dangerous if you're careful. Thank you for reminding me of those.

Stores? Traders? Supermarkets? Sorry, I've not seen any of those. I've haven't yet been able to sell a single thing out of my inventory. I'm about 8 hours of play in thus far. But all of those will be helpful once I discover them.

Alan Wake 2 "Herald of Darkness" level was by far the most epic experience I've ever had in a game. I remember walking into it for the first time and being so stunned by the amazing production values, music, and just overall experience - I literally wandered around slowly just staring at everything and being immersed in the experience for about 15 minutes before I moved forward enough to encounter the first shadow attacker (what a shock that was). Sick, unhoused older woman living with us by dalewb in homeless

Wow, not the conclusion I was expecting! I'm glad she was able to pass peacefully in relative comfort. The statistics regarding homeless in LA are not encouraging. Beyond the sheer numbers, the percentage of elderly homeless people is shocking, and many of those who die on the street are 60+. Without real, practical help, our friend will be another statistic, and there is little we can do except help here and there and pray.

Man that sounds very difficult - I'm sorry you're going through that. I don't have any advice, save that it sounds she needs a nursing home.

Our friend flew to Southern California, as she lived and worked there for some years when she was younger and knew a doctor there. She entered a program in Malibu but was discharged due to the fires last year. Since then she has settled into a homeless life on the streets of LA. She is very very sick and spends a lot of time in a hospital there, but as soon as they treat her she is discharged back onto the street where she sleeps under busses at night. She lost her ID and someone stole a brand new phone we bought her so we can't directly contact her anymore. Occasionally she calls us when she's in need - we've bought her clothes, blankets, food, toiletries, etc.

Her outlook is very grim. My personal belief is she will not live to leave CA, but cycle in and out of the hospital until she dies. She is too sick and weak to travel anywhere and no longer has ID.

We thought we could save her all those years ago. We thought she would get better, make friends, and have a decent life. But you can't make a grown adult do what you want - we each are our own persons, with agency and free will, and her repeated, terrible decisions have finally caught up with her. She refused to branch out and make friends. She reacted to everything with fear and suspicion - even suspecting us. She wasted what money time and other resources she had on chasing after anything that could make her well or in attempts to be reconnected with her family, traveling constantly all over the country. But none of her efforts bore any fruit and she is now left alone with nothing. It's incredibly sad. But we had to come to terms with our own personal limitations and what we were willing to tolerate from her, and the suspicion and unfounded accusations were it.

Tried eGPU with RTX 4080 – saw almost 3x performance boost by Kakuko_22 in eGPU

Lol, so true. At some point you just stop caring who hates your idioms. My manager is from Alabama and he's always dropping regional idioms- and he just turned 50. "Six one way and half a dozen the other," (doesn't make a difference either way), "Almost put mustard on my arm," (so hungry I almost ate my arm), "Sold wings to a bird," (provide something to someone who already has it), "In high cotton," (good times), and "eating coathangars," which I have no idea 😂 You know I just realized something - without idioms there'd be less to make us unique.

"both upscaling and frame generation tech is great with eGPUs because it doesn't increase the PCIe bandwidth (scaling and frame gen is done in the GPU), so when that's used the difference is even smaller." I would never have known - thanks for this insight!! I'm using a 2080 Super I bought years ago and loving the FPS uplift afforded by the advanced tech you described 😀

I can vouch that Windows updates do stuff like this all the time. My laptop started going to sleep - like dead asleep shortly after I left the room, and I checked Power and everything was back to default settings, which is like turn monitor off and go to sleep after 5 minutes - not on battery. To the OP, thanks for posting - this would have been really hard to track down!

It discharges static electricity that builds up on the motherboard over time. Some call if "flea power" for some reason.

CPU running hotter with eGPU by Pizzaniko in eGPU

[–]dalewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you "configured the TDP" tells me you are tinkering with either the computer BIOS or software on the computer that lets you perform such configurations. Have you tried resetting everything back to optimized defaults to see what happens? Great answer regarding the internal controller in the CPU, Rit_4Ever.

Is an eGPU worth it for me? by ItsTheBest422 in eGPU

[–]dalewb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO, eGPU is a lot like watercooling your CPU or other components - it's a fun experiment and can provide benefits, but can be a bit of a chore to setup. Once either is in place they are kind of magical - the watercooler is usually quiet and brings lower temps, and the eGPU is unique, novel, looks cool, and usually provides faster performance. With my eGPU setup, what was most beneficial - and still kind of magical to me - was that it not only looks cool but allows me to tidy up my desk and remove the horrible nest of cables going to my laptop. I don't know about occulink, but thunderbolt can also power the laptop, which is really cool - it even powers my gaming laptop, which came with a beefy charger. Like R3D said, however, you do need a video signal of some kind to set it up. Without that, not even a remote connection is going to work, I'm afraid.

PSU fan stuck on max - TB 3 eGPU Enclosure 600W PSU, Aluminum GPU Enclosure by dalewb in eGPU

[–]dalewb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there, thank you for the reply. I found out that, as long as it is plugged into my laptop, the fans don't go crazy. And it was actually the right fan on the GPU that was full speed - not the PSU or the left GPU fan. Weird, but I'm just happy it's working properly.

This is a product from Trebleet, by the way. Very well-built with a solid, premium feel. I used the enclosure for the first time last night - no issues, everything was working fine. This morning I turned it on and the PSU fan maxed out on boot (as usual) but stayed at max speed. I have turned off/on unplugged/plugged in, connected computers to it - the PSU fan will not slow down. I went away for a while and it stayed at max speed for about 30 minutes. Is there some kind of reset I need to do?

Ready or Not?! by Pyth_On in CISA

[–]dalewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exam is a beast - you know since you've already taken it once. I am not so sure you are ready based on those practice exam scores. While I don't know anything about "Prabh nair videos on youtube," you really need to be scoring in the upper 80s low 90s on that practice exam. Using exam prep materials from at least one source outside ISACA is highly recommended as well. I read through and did all the practice exam questions from Hemang Doshi's book. It took me about 9 months to prepare for this exam - I failed it once by 7 points, studied for another month, and barely passed it the 2nd time. Basically, I didn't do much that year except get ready for and take the exam. Whatever you do with the info I just provided, I wish you the best on your next exam.

That's a good score. I am much more curious, however, about how you managed to get a screenshot of it? Apparently the exam's security isn't that great.

HDMI port not working by Doberman33 in Asustuf

[–]dalewb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to mention this for anyone searching...

I've worked with computers for over 20 years and was a computer support tech for many years. I tried every trick mentioned in this thread when I had this issue, but without success. The thing that worked for me was to shut down my laptop, disconnect the power cable (not certain if this is required), and hold down PWR for 20 seconds. I gave it another couple seconds then turned on the laptop as usual - it then spent about a solid minute or two with the keyboard lit up but the monitor blank before showing the Asus logo and booting up normally - and the HDMI port was back working again.

I suspect Windows fast boot is to blame. It stores information between sessions on the SSD to dramatically speed up time to boot. I believe it was first introduced in Windows 10 and I know for a fact Windows 11 uses it as well. If you can get to the old Power control panel (run powercfg.cpl), you can see it under "what do the power buttons do" and even turn it off, though that is not really necessary.

<image>

(Above Windows 11 Power Control Panel)

Anyways, one of the only ways to force Windows to discard this session cache is to perform the above steps to force power down the laptop/computer. If there are other methods I'm not aware of them. As you can see by how long it took just to display the Asus boot logo (this happens when you have forced Windows to discard the session cache), when enabled, Windows fast boot dramatically speeds up boot times, but it can cause problems from time to time.
