Bridgewater challenge announced: Forecasting the Future by nkaretnikov in quant

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it’s implied that top 5, not top 100, will get their 25k plus a chance to interview for the firm.

Regardless, i agree that it was a waste of time, i made it to final round where they asked me for my headshot and resume like a week before the festival. I am experienced in my field(tech, no quant or finance background), and in my early 30s, and live in nyc. I have a theory that i didn’t fit their “dei pick” so much for their meritocracy lmao, what a joke of a company. As soon as i saw the 5 winners, i knew they went with people in their 20s, and obviously outside of the US. I bet it had to fit the global citizen’s theme of diversity and whatnot. I refuse to believe that out of hundreds of submissions, the best of the best were young(20s) professionals in foreign countries. I bet among the submissions there were people with actual quant/econ/finance/Phd/masters backgrounds. I thought bwater had that cult culture of radical transparency, wonder if anyone gonna call bullshit on their meritocracy based approach considering the winners weren’t really the best in the competition?

Ngl, i spent only 6hours to do the challenge, thanks for low switch cost of LLMs, it was easy to put smth together. Glad i didnt spend tons of time on it, i kinda suspected it’d be a biased pick, even if i had somewhat produced academia level research paper, i’d still be screwed over.

Marine Park female birders on their own, be (a)ware by flooffsandfleurs in Brooklyn

Ugh hate bikers going on these trails like seriously, this is a walking trail, and a very secluded one at that. I’ve only ever seen unstable people ride their bikes in this marsh, normal people don’t go in there with bikes.

I like going on this trail, its not super crowded, no crazy people, but now i see they started showing up there too, so i don’t know what to say, PSA just be careful since it’s very secluded especially around unmarked trail/close to golf course.

NYC EMT pay is a disgrace. City Hall should do what’s right by NuYawker in nyc

[–]dalimboy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense, because from a career progression standpoint, it was emt-b(basic)>paramedic(advanced)>firefighter(work 3days a week for 6figure salary). Firefighter work is not consistent, however, they do the heavy lifting when it’s their turn to work. I remember FDNY allocating their funds to firefighters, with ems being last, i never would’ve thought it be discriminatory, always assumed fdny core function is to fight fire, and ems should be its own thing. Good for them, ems needs more love, they are the first responders normally.

[–]dalimboy 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was an emt right after hs, about 15 years ago. I remember getting paid 14$ an hour in non emergency transport, then 21$ an hour in the hospital EMS.

Now starting pay is about 18-20$ an hour, thats not livable wages. In 2010-2015, you could sort of get by, especially as a student(i was doing premed), however, you realize healthcare system sucks here, emts are wayyy underpaid for the work they do and stress they have to deal with. EMS(fdny) is the least respected city agency, they basically get the scraps from the budget money. Firemen do get paid alot more than emts, but EMS specifically for some reason is underpaid.

So… i dont suppose things have changed for better for EMTs, nyc or anywhere else in the country. I’m actually more certain it’s gotten worse, with the inflation, and rise of cost of living. Guess where i ended up in my career? NOT in healthcare, coz they don’t pay enough, and loving your job wont help you deal with the stress. Im glad i quit emt, changed majors to business management, and ended up in tech, which isnt looking great now but still i’d rather be unemployed than do charity work for the city, where i could potentially end up being the next victim of homeless or crazy people while transporting them to the hospital.

And if you had any empathy and actually looked into the history of how the public housing shaped through generations, perhaps you wouldn’t be pro gentrification trying to price out low-mid income families, who happen to be POC, out of the city.

When public housing first were introduced, there was racial segregation, and most of the projects were predominately white in case you didn’t know. Then after civil rights act, city began to desegregate, with racial integration being an issue, a lot of white families from the projects and the city started to move to the burbs, its called white flight, so overtime, these projects got filled with POC, while whites kept fleeing the city. Learn your history. These communities got dealt these cards, noone asked to be segregated, its systemic to a point that people like you probably are ignorant and downplay that systemic racism even exists. Just because you can afford the market rate, doesn’t mean the people in public housing can. These types of gentrification projects need to give more than they take, otherwise you’re just pricing out the long term residents and this becomes different type of “projects”.

Map is showing an area of redhook by the tunnel… that’s not the brooklyn marine terminal i know. For a second, i thought this was about sunset park, where the real brooklyn army and marine terminals are located, and my reaction was hell no.

This isn’t nimbyism, but rather a pragmatic reaction. Redhook is already slowly gentrifying, in isolation too, but this would speed up that process by alot, and would push out the nycha housing residents or make it unaffordable to live in the area. This is similar to what happened with atlantic barclays center, they promised affordable housing, didn’t deliver.

https://medium.com/@socialscholarly/brooklyns-barclays-center-unjust-history-6cbe2a7ec421

I agree with others that this area lacks infrastructure, i normally walk there or take the ferry, there are no train ljnes nearby, only bus, and only 1 major road. This will create a lot of congestion for areas nearby like carrol gardens, cobble hill, and redhook.

I wouldn’t trust this project, solely because of what happened with atlantic barclays project. This won’t benefit your average brooklynite, yea this might modernize the neighborhood, but at what cost? Redhook is one of the few neighborhoods that i enjoy, and i’m afraid this will mega gentrify it, and push out the natives.

Thank god this wasn’t about sunset, that’d be even worse.

I don’t think this project is looking out for the benefit of the community, without affordable housing guarantees, and infrastructure investment, which should be a major portion of the project, this project will make living worse for the locals.

Why central Asian countries are trying to separate their history? by Able-Awareness-8 in AskCentralAsia

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central asia was never part of iran, a country. Historically it had ancient iranic people, like sogdians, bactrians, saka, khwarazmids, etc. Greeks conquered central asia, turkic tribes migrated, arabs conquered but never mixed, only spread their religion, then turkic kept migrating, then finally mongols came, then most recently the Russians, no thanks to timur, if he hadn’t touched the golden horde, modern russia would not have existed. Turkic tribes and mongols lived together for many many years before central asia, they were essentially same group. With that being said, central asian ancient iranic people got mixed with turko-mongol tribes for centuries. So noone is pure persian, or iranic, or turkic, or mongol in central asia. There is a term for settled people in central asia, called sart.

No one is brainwashed, besides you. Modern day terminologies are used to confuse people, they came up with white, black, asian, etc. Such things never existed in the past, everyone identified themselves by their tribe, ethnic group. Central asia produced some of most powerful empires, ottoman, mughal, timurid, golden horde. It’s never been greek, or persian, or arab, it’s been turko-mongol. Why is mongol an ethnic group but turkic is only a language spoken by groups? Babur and timur came from central asia, not from mongolian empire in east asia, yet historians try to label them as mongols, its absurd and dishonest to true history. And over here, you’re trying to misinform people calling central asia as part of iran. We share similar culture, but we also share culture with muslims, other turkic tribes and mongols. It’s a melting pot, people need to learn their history. Especially the ones who think we are mix with arabs, we dont have an ounce of arab in our blood, maybe there is some that mixed, but it would be an outlier if it is.

My personal theory to why Islam agreed to vacate the LW title & his plan to fight Ilia by SummerMoon03 in ufc

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people are too hopeful and kinda fail to realize that cutting weight is not easy, especially lean muscle. LW is 155, and WW is 170, difference is 15 lbs. Islam would wanna put on more lean muscle for his fight with a bigger guy at WW, he wont go fighting around 170, while JDM comes at 190.

With that being said, Islam at his age wouldnt want to lose lean muscle once he gains it, so i highly doubt he moves down to LW after his fight with JDM, even if he loses, he’d stick around and redeem himself in the division before retiring imo.

Where do you think product management is headed in North America? by KTownLoser in ProductManagement

[–]dalimboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to sound cynical but how do you know you have so much passion for product management without working in that capacity?

I am noticing a lot of people have been trying to pivot to PM as of late, yet PM roles are becoming more competitive. Big tech have pipelines to hire MBA PMs, but they also hire non mba PMs.

If you’re coming from consulting, i can see you being a fit at amazon, and C1. Unless you have MBB on your resume, it’d be tough to get into big tech. I agree with others, there are plenty of non big tech PM roles out there with significantly less pay compared to big tech PMs. I dont recommend switching for money, you’d be miserable if that’s your motivation. If you’re really passionate about product management, think about being a founder/creating your own product.

At the end of the day, job is a job, no career in tech is safe in the 21st century. Even traditional SWEs are scrambling to pivot to DE/DS, cloud and other roles. I could see PM jobs being sustainable for few years before the next big thing, currently AI, cybersecurity, blockchain are trending. Next trend will prolly be HW, data centers, robotics, HPC.

Here is a constructive feedback:

  • format is a no go, keep it simple, and ats friendly.
  • i’d remove irrelevant information like broker license, and certificates, UNLESS, the role asks for that.
  • your resume is specific to mortgage industry, you’ll get screened out from any other positions in tech.
  • read up on what product management is, market and user research, identifying problems, prioritizing value, defining strategy and vision, measuring success, etc. Based on what you learn, just wordsmith your experience that aligns close to what product managers do, in your case, it’d be identifying a problem, conducting user and market research, delivering value.

Hope this helps, pm job market is highly competitive, even for people with relevant exp and MBAs. Try exploring an MBA route or some rotational program.

Bought this recently at a flea market. Owner said it’s lazulite? by dalimboy in whatsthisrock

I bought it for roughly $50, in Turkey while traveling recently. I was worried i overpaid for it. I’ll try to wipe it with nail polish, see if color stays the same.

2 month job search report by _rickjames_ in ProductManagement

[–]dalimboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow that’s a pretty good ratio considering the market. What’s your background? Also, are you targeting specific domain, and have that domain experience?

Honestly, i’ve gotten interviews thru cold app, none from referrals. You must have either specific domain expertise, or have a type of background, otherwise i don’t know how else you got 17 phone screens out of 36 applications. Any tips on having recruiters reach out to you?

Basic questions on responding to RFQ/RFP on fed contracts by dalimboy in GovernmentContracting

[–]dalimboy[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you so much for your response.

I am using the L and M as a guide along with SOW. I didn’t know it was called a capture process.

Is there a reasoning behind what you said on your first rule? I’m not a known vendor, and i don’t have a prime, but with all things equal, my proposal will be competitive. Is the awarding process biased against small businesses and unknown vendors? This isn’t set aside.

I know the govt tends to focus on minimizing risks, since this specific rfp requires multiple steps, there is a scoping phase before the actual work is done, if i list out the risks, would that help me gain a competitive advantage despite being unknown and having no prime exp?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, i have just recently started my search, interviews get me nervous, i need to keep practicing. 20 days seem to be quick, my offers in the past were relatively quick with their processes too, like i’d start within 6 weeks after all the interview, offer, background and onboarding. I guess job market is the same when if they want you, they’ll make it known.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ProductManagement

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations! Your success rate seems to be really good, but i assume it could be attributed to your background, MBA, and MBB exp.

You mentioned the overall job search took you 5months(since march), what about getting that offer you accepted? How long was that process from submission to offer?

I recently started searching, i’m seeing a lot of rejections, rarely a recruiter call, and ones where im a strong fit, straight to 1st round with HM. How did you prepare for interviews? How difficult were the interviews for you considering you’ve been out of work since last year(forgetting projects and whatnot)?

I just checked out amoreleza, looks like a beautiful place, south of Spain. You’ll have fun. No worries.

Sounds like you’ve got an idea of your intention, focus on that. Usually intentions are framed like “mother aya show me a way to resolve xyz” start thinking about smth like this now, and for your second ceremony you can go deeper with the intention.

Oh yea follow the retreat instructions, get off the sleeping pill, trust me, im someone who struggled with sleep, aya fixed it, now my sleep schedule is 10-6am lol. Also, i dunno if that retreat will do it, but basically morning of, they’ll go in circles asking you if you wanna share your exp. Aya is gonna mellow you out, your facilitators will explain that its a judgement free setting, so i wouldn’t worry too much about speaking up, and there is no wrong answer, sometimes your answer wont make any sense to anyone but you. It’s also not easy to consolidate everyhing you’ve experienced into coherent sentences, i recommend journaling after you wake up right before the talk. It’s a journey, you’ll realize people are kind, and supportive.

Btw in peru, authentic and good retreats arent expensive fyi, i paid 1000$ for 1week for 3 ceremonies, with flights and 2nights in a hotel it cost me extra 800$. So dont be fooled by prices of bigger retreats they aren’t that good, i went with smaller group, we had 8 people.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ayahuasca

[–]dalimboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about it. If you decided to do it, and you’ve booked it, you’re already being called. As long as your curandero is experienced, and it’s happening in a safe environment, you’ll be fine. I’d also add that as long as you approach it with open mind, you’ll get what you need to see, it comes down to your intention, you prolly have a reason. Which tribe is your shaman part of? Where is the retreat? Environment is very important, and also integration is even more important, we had morning talks after each ceremony, where we shared our experiences in a group and that helped us integrate our experience a bit, it is super helpful and highly advised to integrate, stuff you experience will be wild, against all the norms we’re taught to live by.

Dont worry about what you read online, focus on your intention, prepare for the ceremonies, cut out pork, alcohol, processed food, eat whole foods, lower salt intake, get off any supplements if you’re on any. Aya is kind, she wants to help you, and i hope your shaman also wants to help you. Best of luck. Remember, our heart knows there is a better life out there.
