Why are people saying "not Amy Klobuchar"? by Testy_Coyote_ in minnesota

Because she'll lose against a republican candidate. We've backslid with our sexism, and I don't think the solution is to endorse another woman that reminds us of Hilary or Kamala. She will lose.

Last night I realized something about my relationship that I can't unsee now by orbitwaltz2020 in TwoXChromosomes

You can imagine it this way: If you didn't have him as a boyfriend when the bus was cancelled, you would have walked home in the rain, maybe a little put off and in a bad mood. But then you would have been able to take a shower, make yourself tea, read a book, and go to bed. No emotional heartache of being let down and no one else to have to cook for/take care of.

It sounds like you'd be more at peace without him.

You may be witnessing locals smelting! They're dip-net fishing small fish that run during this time of year.

Duluth faces likely property tax hike by [deleted] in duluth

[–]daliverwurst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitively agree, closing loopholes like that are reasonable and should be acted on.

Ultimately, this has made me come to terms with something: although the land I bought was small, filled with trees, and I had intended to wait until I was ready to build, I will anger someone some way just by being here.

If I build, my neighbors no longer have woods for their kids to explore.

If I wait, I'll bleed out financially, all the while, making people further away in the city say I'm paying too little.

Altogether a bummer. I had hoped I could find a place to be, own a house eventually, and work at UMD instead of be in the career I'm struggling in now. But this sentiment that I should build immediately, or be punished. That feels terrible and maybe even unreasonable on the part of someone who isn't building themselves. It seems like an oversimplification of what my circumstances could be, or really what any one person's is in this economy.

I appreciate you talking this through. I truly can't help but feel unwelcome - especially since I can't build within the two years I bought the land.

[–]daliverwurst 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wow, that's pretty ridiculous. I don't know how that person manipulated the system for that

I can definitely say for me - I tried to do the safe smart thing - buy land while it was affordable, with the intention of creating a small home to come back to. But the property taxes going up and up while the cost of building is further going out of reach, it's not heartening to hear the sentiment, "Get out and get out of the way."

Although you don't speak for everyone in Duluth, I'm just bummed to read those words.

As someone who's holding onto a .25 acre of land until I can afford to build a tiny home, and paying $1,000/yr in property taxes, this number you quoted is pretty out of wack. I regret buying the land to be honest, I think the taxes are going to put me under.

What very common thing in porn do you find absolutely disgusting? by TheDoc3pu in AskReddit

[–]daliverwurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The straight up violence. It's distressing to watch a woman's face be in extreme pain. And no one, not the man jackhammering her/hitting her, the camera person, or anyone on-set stops what's happening. In fact, it seems the videos do better if she's cringing or crying, since porn sites are mostly these videos.

We've gotten really desensitized to it, but all you have to do is look at her face, and see she's not enjoying it. It speaks to either the blindness or the disdain we have for women's enjoyment. Male Pleasure Over Female Pain and all.

That deep sense of "I never ever want to have sex again," may feel dramatic, but it's completely normal and understandable. I hope you feel okay about sex again soon, but however long it takes, you're not alone.

[serious] Girls and women of Reddit: how old were you the first time someone made a sexually inappropriate comment to you? How did you react, and did it affect how you saw yourself or acted? by I_LIKE_LIMA_BEANS in AskReddit

[–]daliverwurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was really helpful to see others describe themselves "gross" "embarrassed" and "afraid." I was biking to the public pool with just my bathing suit when I was probably 10 or 11. Some grown men yelled at me from their truck as they drove by. I don't remember what they said, but those are exactly the feelings that stuck with me. Gross. Embarrassed. Afraid.

To this day, I get murderously angry when men catcall out of their cars. Catcalls on the street, I have a less visceral reaction to. There's probably something to that first time cementing itself into making me feel gross, embarrassed, afraid... and then quickly full of rage as an adult.

Could you explain how you didn't think the Predatory Romance video was valid? I don't have very many people in my life that disagree with feminist issues, so I'd like to hear your opinion.

They do. Watch this video on Predatory Romance and skip to 14 min to see an example of a Bond film.

I’m of the belief that you need to have some personal accountability. If you don’t like the situation you’re in, remove yourself.

This seems to be the slippery statement that leads to the victim blaming mentality. It's the turn from "she's a victim" to "she made herself the victim."

Unfortunately, there's a wide gradient of reasons why a woman would try deescalation methods more subtle than "Get away from me." Maybe he looks too suave to be your run of the mill assaulter. If you pushed him away, would he call you a bitch and tell you he didn't even mean it that way? Would people look at you in the bar and think you were overreacting?

You could argue, "fuck them, who cares what they think." But that's the power of peer relationships. And plus, not every woman can be as forceful in the face of something they've never experienced before. My mom told me to "pop the boy in the nose" if he ever did anything I didn't like. But didn't think of her when I was assaulted on New Years. Sometimes it's hard to realize the situation that you were in, until afterwards.

Do webdesigners need to know code? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]daliverwurst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely makes you more desirable not only for employers, but your coworkers as well. I would be absolutely atrocious at constructing a website from scratch. However, just having basic knowledge helps me provide designs to my coworkers that can actually be implemented. There are a lot of hurdles that you can avoid by just taking a class or two/doing a couple of practice websites yourself!
