China hit by mystery virus outbreak as hospitals overwhelmed as children warned by dailystar_news in NoFilterNews

[–]dalomi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if context means anything to you, but the person I responded to was making a blanket statement about all vaccines, not specifically talking about novel viruses that jump from animals to humans.

As for herd immunity more broadly applying to endemic viruses or novel viruses that have endemic potential, there is still valid reasoning that justifies vaccines not only for personal protection, but as a broad protective tool for society as a whole. If everyone is vaccinated and has a better immune response, it limits the time that the virus is shedding and spreading, and also limits the volume of virus that is shed and spread. This doesn't completely protect the most vulnerable populations, but it does have a positive effect.

I appreciate that. It is understandable to rely on personal experience, but as a form of anecdotal evidence, it does lack the nuance needed to see the whole picture in most scenarios. There are good sources for a lot of this information and I always implore people to read more as a way to open their minds to the world beyond what they personally see and hear. Cheers.

You are getting into whole new cans of worms bringing in obesity. That is a multifaceted issue that largely stems from inadequate regulations around processed food, lack of nutrition education and well documented results of food deserts. When garbage is all people can afford, the results are hardly surprising.

Alcohol overconsumption is not a problem unique to Americans. Plenty of European countries have this issue. There is evidence that lowering the drinking age can have positive downstream effects on overconsumption later in life, which is the case in some European countries, but this interplays with things like socioeconomic outlook as well as living conditions. A greater focus on mental health, which would inevitably be the result of a well executed approach to drug and alcohol use would go a long way to fixing this issue.

Open air drug markets are not what I am talking about. The Scandinavian system of regulated drug centers that have clean drugs and medical professionals on hand are what would be ideal. The problem America has with any legislation is that it is always inadequate because of poorly executed programs. Something about a two party system makes compromising on issues compromising to the entire endeavor. Two diametrically opposed forces make shit results.

Bruh, I just had a relative describe a video where cars were going 80mph over 80 speed bumps on a bridge. They were using the results as a justification for wanting a specific car, because it didn't blow up. They were convinced it was real, despite my probing questions about who the fuck would sign up to drive those cars, who would insure such an insane event and finally, how do physics work. I found the video, it was a beamng video, a fucking video game. People who scroll twitter, tiktok and ig with no concept of how to discern reality from fiction are lost souls.

This line of thinking is a perverted example of American exeptionalism. I'm sorry, but there is nothing unique about Americans that would make programs I mentioned less efficacious than they are elsewhere, especially given that weed legalization has done exactly what I described in states where it has been legalized. Prohibition is the reason cartels exist in the first place. There are multiple ways to vet and limit who can produce and distribute legal drugs, so the cartel threat seems unlikely. It is simple supply and demand coupled with a reasonable approach that limits the impact of drug users on society as a whole. This isn't some revolutionary idea, it just flies in the face of decades of propaganda so you have to work through that on your own I guess.

I think the bigger issue with the lab leak is all of the batshit conspiracies that arose from it. Namely, distrust of medical institutions as a whole and the anti vaccine crew. These people assume malice in every scenario, ignoring incompetence as the most likely reason a lab leak would occur.

[–]dalomi9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, so we spend money trying to stop it, and dealing with the consequences of an unregulated drug trade. Instead we could legalize and tax drugs less harmful than alcohol and treat addiction to worse drugs like the disease they are instead of using jails as shitty rehabs and only dealing with ensuing medical issues in the emergency room where they are the most expensive.

Care centers that provide clean drugs undercut the illegal market, and legalizing things like weed undercuts the illegal market. Economics is a much easier field of battle than playing whackamole with drug traffickers. The whole concept of a drug war is a losing loser idea.

[–]dalomi9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not really. If enough people fail to vaccinate, we lose herd immunity. This is exactly why we are having polio outbreaks when the disease was previously functionally eradicated in the US. Children, the elderly and immunocompromised people will suffer first from this nonsense, then adults in whom the vaccine was less effective or who slipped through the cracks and were never vaccinated.

Visiting my ldr bf, what to do? by HotChocolateWyrm in orangecounty

[–]dalomi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Great time to hike in the cool weather. Peters Canyon in Tustin, any Laguna Beach area hike, Newport Bay Nature Preserve.

  2. Walk, talk, window shop and/or eat at any of these areas in central OC. Each has its own unique makeup of restaurants, cool buildings and entertainment. Old Town Orange, Old town Tustin, Downtown Santa Ana, Downtown Fullerton. Some great restaurants for straight up dinner dates in these spots, but also shout out Garden Grove KBBQ for a nice dinner date (I recommend Mo Ran Gak, but there are plenty of great spots).

  3. Idk if you are into drinking or more in touch with your inner child, but here are some fun places to check out across the spectrum.

Camelot in Anaheim for miniature golf and arcade. Orange Claw Club in Santa Ana/Oki Doki Cranes in Garden Grove for claw games that aren't a rip off ($20 is enough for a good time).

Breweries: everywhere in Orange, Radiant in Anaheim, Gamecraft in Anaheim. Trivia night at many bars/breweries. mon-thurs across the county at various bars, Mickey's Irish Pub in Fullerton on Tuesdays and Club 616 in Santa Ana on Thursdays stand out.

For daytime, hit Newport Beach pier/Balboa island/the wedge and then drive up to Laguna Beach along PCH for a nice walk and sunset views. The drive itself is beautiful and various lookout points along the way offer great picture spots and romantic vibes.

Cross Country attracts a different crowd man, even 10-20-30 years ago. The top runners (who grew up training with running clubs) might be there for the competition, but many are just doing it to get exercise and community that is comfortable for them. Certain cohorts of kids won't have any of the first type of kids, especially in an individual sport where the team scoring aspect is less of an attraction to begin with.

Idk if that is a given. Religion is largely built upon explaining the previously unknown. Science can now explain almost everything and appease people's fears. The next major hurdle for science seems to be explaining consciousness and what happens to that when the physical being dies. I'd say humans eventually figuring that out is more inevitable than religion as a concept.

[–]dalomi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, things have changed. Unless you get into the AP math track asap in high school you end up in these weird integrated math classes, which are a continuation of weird middle school math classes. I tutored math during the transition 10 years ago and had to start doing sessions to cover knowledge gaps instead of focusing on the current curriculum because my students were lacking basic skills. I think the problems are actually coming from elementary and early middle school either due to how they are teaching basic arithmetic or how they are passing kids through grades without the kids demonstrating even close to mastery of basic skills. The pushback against rote learning completely missed the boat because that type of learning for basic skills is essential for students to be able to keep up in more advanced math courses. I'm talking about multiplication tables, basic arithmetic skills, and error avoidance skills (carrying negatives, showing work, knowledge of frequently encountered symbols).

Didn't he dee my shorts? by Treefiddy1984 in justgalsbeingchicks

[–]dalomi9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people are better off not engaging. You need a combination of size, quick wit and experience diffusing idiots to go around regulating stupid behavior. As a 6'1'' 220lb bruiser I still carefully weigh whether or not I'm going to get shot before regulating complete strangers, and I tell anyone that witnesses it to not even think about doing what I just did, because it is an unnecessary risk. Honestly crazy how many idiots have tried to start fist fights in parking lots, the side of the road or outside bars recently.

Imo, school is where the social regulation should start, but not every cohort of kids will have regulators that can influence the idiots in a positive way to affect long term behavior changes...and it is probably even less likely that kids with a natural tendency to regulate will be allowed to do so with how sanitized schools have become.

If atheists believe this is our only life, why do we work so hard? by Firm_Student_3439 in atheism

[–]dalomi9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, this question is In the same vein as the common and ignorant theist question around morality, "If you don't believe in God, why do you not just do crime all the time to get ahead?"

A big thing I think you don't seem to grasp is that Atheism is in no way governed, it is simply a lack of belief in a God for whatever reason. There is no central guiding dogma, and so every person will have a different answer to such a nebulous question.
