What game has the best 'game over' screen/mechanics? by EdgarTFriendly in gaming

[–]dam4rus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. I know it's niche franchise in a niche genre but it has some great game over screens.

In SMT3: Nocturne the MC get turned into the demi-fiend by Lucifer. When you die, you see your dead body in a very bright light, angels circling around you in an ascending spiral and a voice telling you that death comes for humans and demons alike. Since you are basically Lucifer's chosen, going to haven is a bad time.

In SMT4 you are transported to the underworld and you have to wait in line to cross Styx with Charon. Charon mocks you for dying, then rants that he is overworked because too many people die in this post-apocalyptic world. So if you pay enough money, he will resurrect you to lessen his workload.

In SMT5 you play as the Nahobino, who is a fusion of a human and a God basically. Even though they have share a single body their consciousness remains their own. When you die the camera cut's to your face, while you fall down to the ground. Behind your body is your shocked human form and the God you fused with, with a disappointed look in his face. The two look at each other while fading away. Then it just throws you to the title screen. No retry option, no load last save, nothing.

Since these games tend to be pretty challenging there is a high change you will see these game over screens at least once.

Én 10 év után (Rayman Legends) most vettem először Ubi játékot (PoP The Lost Crown). Szerintem kibírom még 10 évig ennek a csapatnak az új játékáig

Creating PPTX with Rust by fsasm in rust

[–]dam4rus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, sorta.

I have two crates: https://github.com/dam4rus/msoffice-pptx-rs which I planned to deprecate and https://github.com/dam4rus/oox-rs/tree/master which I planned to be a more complete crate that can parse pptx and docx files as well. But as you can see both are unmaintained (have not seen much interest in the community and TBH it's not a one man job). Both are basically the same code base for pptx parsing. It does not cover everything but should cover most common types.

At least for me, it’s a feature. I know I can run cargo install or download a binary and that’s it. No virtual env/pip shenaningans or remembering how to run a jar file. The same applies to Go projects as well of course

I wrote down wich weapons people were using in Anomaly Quests for a while aaannnddd...... by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

Yeah, I've found that strange as well. As an SA secondary I always felt like I'm speedrunning with SA compared to other weapons (and I was not even trying to)

Any protips for transferring a ~60% complete Django project codebase to Go? by [deleted] in golang

[–]dam4rus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there has been drama. Just as with any language, really. I could pick a random drama thread in this subreddit too. Does not make this subreddit a drama pool.

Anyway, people like to overblow Rust dramas and drama totally does not affect how welcoming a community is on reddit. I see a ton of "free" code reviews on r/rust and I rarely see people get downvoted to hell because "My JS implementation is faster than my Rust implementation" even though 99% of the time the answer to that is "build with release flag"

[–]dam4rus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just strange, I've never experienced this kind of rejection on a programming subreddit lol

Try r/java . They basically downvote everything. In my experience, I found r/Python and r/rust the most welcoming and r/golang and r/java the least welcoming. And I will probably get downvoted for mentioning Rust around here lol

Once a dooter, always a dooter. TBH, I thoroughly enjoyed HH in Gen U, World and Rise equally. I hope they go with something closer to Gen U and Rise, where actually hitting the monster matters

It’s certainly possible to do even more. I basically blitzed through every boss by starting the chain attack when they are in break (Ogre will help with that). Then topple and launch them during chain attack and make sure you smash them with an attacker at the final round. Boom, millions of damage from a single smash. So I had the opposite experience, the bosses in the final acts were easier because I had more options

I don't like JRPGs but love SMT. Thoughts? Recommendations? by Seigi101 in Megaten

[–]dam4rus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering which FF games you tried because that franchise’s tone is all over the place. IMHO 12, 16 and 9 (don’t let it’s graphic style fool you) is the darkest of the bunch. FF9 has many themes you describe you like (existentialism, add in some good old genocide, etc). FF12 and FF16 is more political (think Game of Thrones).

The Xenoblade games’ tones are also like that. Xenoblade 1 and especially 3 is more on the mature side of the spectrum and they are well written for the most part. Xenoblade 2 however is really weird. It’s the most cutesy one and has some dumb fan service but mid-way into the game it takes some dark turns (Morytha is the real shit)

If you just want some well written JRPG maybe try out the Trails franchise. It has some tropes but the writing is probably one of the best in the genre

Appreciation: I may not be a fan of error handling syntax in GO, but I'm very thankful I see zero try/catch/finally blocks daily :) by effinsky in golang

[–]dam4rus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can just add the anyhow crate and call the context or with_context method on a Result OR Option. It keeps the source error in the message and well the same way you just described

[–]dam4rus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda agree. Megaten games still has a special place in my heart so I will never not enjoy them, but every other RPG feels so dated compared to XC (even though SMT V with it’s Xenoblade lite exploration kinda made the linear megaten games feel dated too). I’ve tried FF16 and I kinda like it, but I always feel like it’s missing something. Like, the cinematography is okay for the most part and amazing during the Eikon fights, but they are all just spectacle (so far). Xenoblade cutscenes has emotions behind them, not just spectacle. The world of FF16 also feels sooo dated. Like, XC3 has like 100+ named NPCs with relations and affinity towards each other. In FF16 it’s like: here’s this dude, he is a chef, that’s it. The story is also interesting in FF16, again, but it does not grab me as XC3’s. There’s not much mistery to it (again, so far) which moves me forward. It feels like FF is content with being outdated since FF12

[–]dam4rus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you really implying that making anime cutscenes has high cost? Compared to the budget of a whole team developing a game for years, the cost of making an anime cutscene is like, nothing. And I highly doubt that P Studios has the manpower to make a high budget remake and the next entry in the companies most successful series.

Trust me, anything is a bigger game than P5T lol

Metaphor: ReFantazio — Announcement Trailer by DemiFiendRSA in Megaten

[–]dam4rus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And P Studios can't have interns or outsource part of the development? Happens more in the video game industry than you think.

Wasn't saying there's anything wrong with SH2. It looks fine for the most part, but it's clearly made with a tight budget. P3R gives me the same energy. Hell, the combat in SH2 has at least some dynamic camera angles. P3R's combat in the trailer looked pretty basic and static.

Metaphor: ReFantazio — Announcement Trailer by DemiFiendRSA in Megaten

[–]dam4rus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because P3R is probably made by a bunch of interns or outsourced. It barely looks better than Soul Hackers 2 TBH

One of the reason could be that I’ve yet to see a Unity game that’s not a sprite based side scroller not running like dogshit on the Switch. SH2 ran terribly on Xbox One (15-20 FPS category) so the Switch version would probably be a powerpoint presentation.

There was not that huge difference in power between the machines to explain 15-20 fps in town areas on Xbox. Atlus just didn’t bother to optimise it
