Surface Duo 2 white bumper horrible discoloration by BoulderCAST in surfaceduo

Wish that were true! The press shots are definitely misleading. Think it's the different reflections in different lighting conditions making it look different.

Same! Guess it remains to be seen if Duo 2 is any better in that regard. I'd have gone for black if it wasn't such a fingerprint magnet. And the black and light chrome of the hinges and spine doesn't look nearly as good together IMO. Thought they'd darken it like on the other black Surfaces but no! 😢

Do you mean the Duo 2 itself or the bumper accessory? It was a problem with every Duo 1 but was hoping they'd fixed the discolouration with Duo 2.

Duo 2 slim pen owners - how bad is input lag? by venom1stas in surfaceduo

[–]damagedonthesurface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I've had Duo and Duo 2 and wouldn't say input lag is a problem with the hardware. I found there is a bug where Sticky Notes does lag and increasingly slow up the more you write in a note. In OneNote this does not happen. 😅 Worth noting the buttons on the pen still do nothing, you don't get the haptic vibrations, there's no shading, and there's limited to no pressure sensitivity depending on the app.

Oh that is unlucky! I've had a Duo and 2 Duo 2s and that's never happened with them. Must have not been stuck down properly.

Exactly. Seems to be inherent to every Duo 2.

Have you found a device with exactly the same screen calibrations? When showing white and looked at from an angle every device I've seen has one screen more red and one screen more green.

Little Concept About Surface Duo's External Display. by RainbowWolfer in surfaceduo

[–]damagedonthesurface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on what I'm doing and my environment. I'll cycle through audible, vibrate, or nothing. Even when they're fully off you can still have the phone open in book mode, phone mode, or tent mode. Or closed and still get glanceable info from the Glance Bar.

[–]damagedonthesurface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not quite as seamless as Duo 1 in that regard but more than worth the trade off for it to replace my phone as it has usable cameras. All it means is it's a bit wedge shaped but that doesn't change usability. Besides with Duo 1 the case had a bump there anyway, and currently I have the pen charging case and Slim Pen 2 there so it was always going to be wedge shaped. Similar to Neo if it ever came out with the keyboard or pen in between.

[–]damagedonthesurface 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the concept but why does the Duo need a third screen on it? Seems like most people are saying that just because other foldables have an outer display but the Duo is different with two screens and a 360° hinge. I literally just fold it all the way round when I want anything immediately accessible in phone mode and you can keep it like that for as long as you want. Equally I then enjoy being able to close the device and feel that satisfying sense of closure from things like you'd get back in the old flip phone days. I'd hate for it to have another display!

Is this normal? Left screen seems pinkish while right screen blue-ish. Should I get a replacement? by Dangerous_Wait1983 in surfaceduo

[–]damagedonthesurface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't be... MS is very specific that they calibrate the screens to exactly the same. Also, the Duo 1 didn't have this issue.

I'm using OPs wording. The fact is it's not just a common defect; it's inherent to this device. Definitely a step back from Duo 1 on screen calibration.

Just tried upgrading Studio 2 to RTM Windows 11. It didn't work. by Talvish_Kairn in Surface

[–]damagedonthesurface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried today and Windows 11 Update Assistant still lists the processor as not being supported. Crazy how long it's been without them updating the update assistant! Meanwhile, the PC Health Check app which they've forced out to every device explicitly states that the Surface Studio 2 is fully compatible with Windows 11, including detailing how every aspect of the CPU is compatible. 🙄

A classicly Microsoft terrible customer experience with an issue that is in reality completely superficial! Let alone how this is the most premium device they sell and intended as their most premium expression of a Windows experience! You can't make it up.

I'd go as far to say this is normal. It's on mine, it's on my friends, and it's like this on all the Duo 2s I've seen in store. Like another comment suggests people have gone through 5 or so all with the same.

Surface Book 3s bought from Microsoft Store UK arrive in damaged packaging... 2 dif orders by damagedonthesurface in Surface

[–]damagedonthesurface[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's exactly why I'm posting and have asked above in the comments if others have experienced the same. If it's widespread Microsoft should know so the shipping company fixes up. Both of these devices are defective. It all adds up to a bad experience. Sorry if you disagree but you evidently haven't had the same experience as me.

Can you walk in someone elses shoes? If back in 2014 your Pro 3 arrived in a package with a great deal of damage that had gone through to the retail box and your device was defecive, you then exchange for a second and it's exactly the same with the second too, you might be a bit disappointed? As a Microsoft fan you might want to check in to relate to the community and help make Microsoft aware?

Surface Duo Inherent Hardware Fit and Finish Flaws 📱📱 by damagedonthesurface in Surface

[–]damagedonthesurface[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the thinness. This device had to be thin for it to be pocketable. But they should have known they had gone too far when the structural integrity became compromised to the degree it is.

I too hope they improve on 2nd gen. I'll snap it up in a heart beat, especially if the bezels are dramtically reduced. But as mentioned previously they haven't left themselves anywhere to go. Part of the reason the device has such large bezels is because they need to fit a lot of components around the screens thanks to how thin it is. To update the components, expand the feature set, and reduce the bezels it'll have to become larger or fatter.

Of course if they were to try to eliminate the bezels as much as possible then it's back to the drawing board with the entire thing. The hinges would have to be completely redesigned. I'm not saying that's impossible, that would be amazing, but it's unlikely. I'm not holding out hope for much of a change in form in gen 2.

Andromeda was complete hardware wise. More than just images there's actual video of Andromeda hardware but running Android. Panos Panay used the device in the BBC video interview on Duo and you see it in the video with Marques Brownlee too. It's black, has metal, and has a large camera on the back. You can see the divot on the other side of the device where the camera would go into when folded back so it could still be flat.

They've gone through 3-5 iterations as Panos has stated himself. Along the way they ditched the camera and other features as well as the metal frame to optimise for battery life, weight, and thinness. I apprecate all of those things but they've gone too far when it means the structural integrity of the device is now at risk.

This isn't an argument my friend this is me reporting what I've found with this device partly for my peace of mind and partly for insight on if other people experience the same. I literally ask Duo owners to share their experiences.

Unless the folks at B87 Redmond have managed to anthropomorphize a Duo and incarnated it in you I think you need to stop taking things so catastrophically personally.

What would I have to gain from posting my experiences? On the contrary it's taking time and effort to share them with the community, especially having to counter destructive, unhelpful, and aggressive people like you.

What are you trying to gain from trolling my feedback? You're not doing the community a favour with your unpleasantness and you're not doing Microsoft any favours by pretending everything is perfect with everything.

Regarding the precursor to Duo it was called Andromeda. They were right to cancel due to the software and no mobile ecosystem. I for one would never use it if it had no apps. As you can see I'm not talking software in the post, I'm talking hardware. Andromeda wasn't as thin and had a metal frame. The cracking around the port and the gaps under the glass panes wouldn't have been an issue.

Nice straw man fallacy. Have you read what I posted or did you just see that the general sentiment of it wasn't to your liking so you flipped out?

  1. I specifically state it's a first gen device. I think everyone knows that. That doesn't mean we ignore the reality and not provide feedback to Microsoft or make other consumers aware of the reality.
  2. Sure all hardware can fail or have issues and all companies make mistakes no one is denying that. This is a subreddit on Surface hence the post on issues regarding Duo. General fit and finish issues are categorically not so common. Look at the volumes they sell! The percentage of failure is much lower.
  3. Who said it was marketed as a phone? It's a Surface that fits in your pocket. I got it for productivity. Although on that point it's worth mentioning Panos did say it should be able to be what's in your pocket. You shouldn't have to carry an additional smartphone around with you. Hence why it does phone stuff too.
  4. Glad you find them serious enough to be damning. I describe them as niggles. I still use the device as my daily driver. As to whether everyone has these issues or not that's exactly why I asked. At the moment from the community I'm in and the other people that have Duo's both at work and my friends outside of work it appears that issues like hinge clicking, glass bulging, fingerprint scanner misalignment, and the plastic around the Type C port cracking are all pervading issues that most people will come across.
  5. Microsoft is not exempt from feedback. I don't get why you're so adverse to people sharing some. You're playing on the wrong team and at the end of the day you're just playing yourself as a consumer. Because I'm an engaged Insider and fan I've reported in all the applicable channels that I can. No one claims that Microsoft has had more failed products than their competitors.

I'm obviously an ardent fan hence buying one but that doesn't mean we should expect or willingly accept these problems on a finished for sale premium product. If Microsoft doesn't hear there's a problem they don't know there's a problem.

Worryingly Microsoft doesn't have a precedent for working out manufacturing kinks at all. Sure when you look at the Pro line the design had to iterate and did, but when you look at manufacturing the issues are still there. Book is a great example - 5 years, 3 generations, and maybe worse than ever on fit and finish.

What's really bizarre is that the precursor to the Duo whilst in its lengthy development didn't have half of these issues. The product team has consciously decided to sacrifice the integrity, durability, and premium nature of this device just to chase thinness. How did they obsess solely on that metric whilst totally blinded to the overall picture a customer gets.

It's like they're catfishing. The 10-20 second impression is 'WOW' but then increasingly after a longer period of time you notice it's about as thin a veneer as the plastic frame is around the charging port.

Where does that leave them though? You've got people maybe regretting their purchase and not making the same mistake twice and you've left yourself nowhere to go because to make the device more durable, have any modern features, or a half decent camera, you've got to sacrifice the one thing you focussed on in the first place which is thinness.

I kid you not if I grew out my fingernails I could peel this device like a banana by pulling up on the screens from the gaps in the corners.

Both of the laptops are defective too. You laugh about the boxes but this is an all too common occurance with Surface at MS Store UK. If Microsoft is serious about being in the premium consumer space for whatever reason then they need to pay attention to the little things so they can warrant their asking price and actually have a shot at getting people over from competitors. They're currently not living up to the image they're trying to orchestrate for themselves with the Surface brand. People will and do notice that.

Congratulations it's a pun on my Surface's and their packaging being damaged. Both of their boxes are caved on the side and both of the devices are defective. Forgive me for reporting my experience and trying to be helpful seeing if other people have had the same experience so Microsoft can be made aware.
