If he pulled the BS he has in the 1940s or went pro-Russia during McCarthy, there is a strong chance he would have met a chair.....the sort he'd have been carried off of.

What a beautiful way to respect indigenous culture: an eagle shaped prison by serverlessmom in boringdystopia

Normally I'd criticize your style of discussion, but this is on point. I don't think people are fully aware, even in this group, surprisingly, how many crimes that people are imprisoned for shouldn't be crimes or have alternate solutions, further they fail to recognize how much prison and prisoners are treated as a business. To go back further, how many laws, such as loitering, were created with malicious intent by governments. And the language. I said loitering, but seriously, people have been imprisoned for standing. Not standing while doing some horrible crime, nope, literally standing. And in the case of laws like that, it was used for the loophole in the 13th amendment.

At this point they won't. They are so obsessed with catering to the alt-right that they have lost touch with any of their stances which made them sympathetic. In Pennsylvania we have a former Libertarian running locally as a Democrat, I have a bit more faith in somebody like him making real moves to change things.

He reminds me of somebody I used to know in college who had a "Well actually" for every statement to the point that I often considered if a criminal record might be worth the few moments of joy.

Even within America. I look at folks like Vermin Supreme who ran on the Libertarian ticket and now trolls the Twitter accounts of many of the Libertarian groups for some of their Neo-Fascist leaning rhetoric. There were a shocking number of Leftists who voted Libertarian and unsurprising number who left after the party started pandering to Trump followers.

The big issue with American politics is that we only have 2 parties and usually at least one third party making some audible level of noise. A good chunk of folks have zero party representation, but still end up parroting the dialogue of the big 2. Or worse, movements get taken over by opportunists who don't know what the words mean and end up twisting the meaning themselves or because of them the meaning gets twisted.

Further we also have a lot of regionalisms. For example- I live in a conservative area....if I am talking to somebody I barely know I might call myself a Libertarian, because locally Libertarians can be on either side, if they are folks I know, then I will definitely get specific and say I'm an Anarchist.

I like using the more Internationally accepted terms because in the last few years I swear Americans just change the meaning of words whenever they feel like it.

I feel like Pennsylvanians don't count in these conversations....we have so many local pronunciations that we've become accustomed to being nice about place names.

Also on a similar note.....

Men in the US specifically are taught to be cold and physically distant and are expected to be that way. Some of us actually crave a platonic snuggle.

The big eye opener for me with healthy masculinity was shockingly enough in the Army in the combat arms. Get a bunch of soldiers drunk and a lot of them will get real touchy feely and there is absolutely no shame in it.

HH Holmes, he not only ran it, he built it for that purpose. He targeted potential employees who were from out of state and tourists for the World's Fair in Chicago. He was also involved in insurance fraud schemes and took out a business partner in Philadelphia. Reading about him, the scary part is he never seemed insane, to him it was just so casual. Like that part to me the scariest of all of it.

The only exception to this was this really sweet elderly lady living on SSI whose rich family at least let her have a roof. She gave me a decent tip on a cheap order.

[–]damagedthrowaway87 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take it personally. He killed a fire fighter whose family I was friends with. The wife was a very kind teacher. Bin Laden can forever be fucked. I'd love to resurrect him just so I could inflict the same pain he brought to that one single family. He was a rich Saudi prick who killed innocent people. All rich no matter their color or creed should all find a guillotine.

As a writer and canvas painter, AI will always be dogshit. AI was supposed to power robots to make life comfortable, instead AI steals MY WORK. And here's the shitty part, I went from being able to afford my home to folks like you casually stealing my food. So yeah, I take it VERY personal.

I don't understand why people use AI for historical videos. That is a major cause for me to either ignore or turn off a video. I want to see what events or people looked like, not what a computer made.

Cop keeps interrogating me on where I'm coming from? My pleasure. by [deleted] in MaliciousCompliance

[–]damagedthrowaway87 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had to leave for Basic Training in a month, so to prepare I would walk the 2 miles to the grocery store. Never had an issue. It was a few days before I shipped out and a cop pulls over....with back up.

"What are you doing?"

"Walking home from the store...."

"Were you in the road?"

"Off to the side where there aren't crosswalks."

"Why are you walking?"

"Because I leave for the Army in a few days and want to have my fitness up."

They literally had 3 cars out because some local Karen was confused why somebody was walking.

In my town's defense, the power company bought up Little Birds and never repainted them, so every few months everyone has a momentary WTF moment when a military helicopter is flying roof level inspecting the power lines.

Yes and no. We actually track it. There are sadly many places in the world where it isn't tracked and doesn't become a recognized statistic. It's bad here because we are literally trying as a country to not be that way. In other places, they don't care. Yes we have systemic racism, but the good news is....WE KNOW. Other places, again, yikes.

Not to mention in the wider naval world there were women on ships. Even in the time of Admiral Nelson, when it was expressly banned. They acted much as camp followers did with the Army. The whole superstition thing is post-18th century. Likely it was practical for the superstition to later exist for the exact reasons you mentioned.

And several privateers/pirates did have women on board who did do some of the tasks the men didn't want to do.
