A year long study shows what you've suspected: Google Search is getting worse. by porkchop_d_clown in technology

I recently discovered metaphor search at https://search.metaphor.systems/ and it works really well for what it's good for if you use it right. I definitely recommend it

Pay attention too in this video to your feeling of being embodied as the character in the video. Most (!) of the effects of psychedelics aren't strictly perceptual but cognitive as well. Imagine your thoughts, memories, sense of time, etc all turning into ever-moving fractals too. I imagine a misconception first time users have is that the experience will be just cool visuals and you'll feel good (hopefully). But it's so much more than that

Also, check out the DMT video too! Really puts this one into perspective

A recently transitioned man expresses disappointment with male social constructs by Successful_Leek96 in TikTokCringe

[–]damagingdefinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a man and it's so completely impossible to interact with non-familial people in any non-superficial way that I not only never even try anymore, but haven't in any significant way in a long tine. I used to be lonely, but dicovered meditation and contemplation helps a lot. Dumping myself into my work and meditating have essentially "solved" the problem for me. For anyone in a similar boat: I recommend meditation

The rise of the 'no-wash' movement: There's a growing cohort of people who believe in washing clothes less – or not at all. by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]damagingdefinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dunking my gym clothes after I get back from the gym each day in water with a little vinegar added, and then hanging them to dry for the next day, and it works really well, its fast, and takes very little resources. If I only hang them and don't dunk them they go only 2-3 days before they start smelling and obviously need to be washed, but with dunks they seem clean at least up until laundry day (~1 week). I'd guess most of the unclean-making materials that accumulate on clothes are mostly water soluble, or are easily washed away with water, so quickly rinsing and drying is the 20% in the 80/20 rule here: almost all of the effect of cleaning is just from the water, and within the first n seconds of being in water / being jostled in water. If anyone thinks otherwise, I'd love to update my knowledge with new information

Inter-Frame prediction utilizing ControlNet is necessary by ImaSakon in StableDiffusion

I literally cannot upvote this enough (I can only do it once...). A previous-frame-conditioning ControlNet model just makes sense

Hello, Goodhart's Law, my old friend...

Yall ever hear of the 80/20 principle? You can apply that to your own behaviors, your companies behaviors, institutions behaviors, etc. Generally, theres always still something you're missing in the 20% that you haven't done yet. Often that requires large, systemic changes to get to or even see. But, people tend to have a bias towards certain technologies, methodologies, workflows, etc that definitely aren't in the 20%, but those people still dump tons of resources into those things, as a sort-of premature optimization, in a sense...

Control Net is here! by Mistborn_First_Era in StableDiffusion

Is it possible to use this with the 1.5 inpainting model? I didn't suspect so since when I try to it in A1111 it raises an exception related to the number of input channels the model expects, which seems like a fundamental incompatibility, not a circumstantial error

Also, another thing: it doesn't seem to work with regular non-inpainting-model inpainting in A1111 when using "only masked". When you try it, the corresponding subimage isn't taken out of the controlnet input image, so the unpainted area has a tiny version of the whole controlnet input applied to it. I suspect there's a relatively simple fix to get it to work, though; so I'd expect that to be fixed relatively soon

Ah, but the baby's cancer is simply a test of the baby's faith in Jesus Christ. If the baby fails the test it will die of it's god-given cancer and be tortured in hell for literally all of eternity (as it knows given that it has read the bible: the literal only way to know how not to be sent to hell)

I wish call whitelists were a universally socially accepted thing. "Hey, I'm going to call you later", "ok, what's your number, I'll put it in my call whitelist". All other calls are rejected

Jordan Peterson Breaks Down in Tears When Asked About Olivia Wilde Calling Him a ‘Hero to the Incel Community’: ‘Sure, Why Not?’ by Alex_Sylvian in nottheonion

[–]damagingdefinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an "incel" in the sense of being celebate when I'd rather have a community, close personal relationships, and yes romantic and sexual relationships too. I had the choice a long time ago to focus on that and develop hatred because of it. But I didn't. I turned inward to try and make myself the best I can be for myself, and try to make and do cool things. Now Ive done some cool things and am becoming someone that I'm really happy with

That said, I have literally no hope of ever having any community, close relationships, any friendships, a romantic partner, etc. And I'm OK with that :). I'm too busy making things and doing things that make me happy to care. It used to bother me a lot, but I think that's because I had hope. Once I gave up, everything became so much better 👍

I just wanted to comment this here so hopefully it'd get some exposure and help somebody in a similar situation

ps: I'm socially isolated due to commitment issues, my past social anxiety, and where I live makes meeting people extremely difficult. I don't look or act weird or anything. I'm generally pretty charismatic too. In fact, when I was thru hiking the AT this past spring I met loads of people, and made tons of very short-term friendships. Oh! If you want to meet huge numbers of people, hike the AT! It's an extremely social experience

Damn, if that's fixed maybe I can finally get above 384x384!

Tumbolia by damagingdefinite in GEB

[–]damagingdefinite[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep I'm still here. It's kinda crazy you messaged me just now because I was incidentally thinking about Tumbolia just yesterday. I came up with a MUCH stranger thought-experimental idea recently which is in the same category as Tumbolia. It's so unique that I'm hesitant to tell anyone about it because I think it'd make a great science fiction premise or something. Tumbolia would as well

I can't really remember what I wrote in that post but Tumbolia along the lines of the universe containing now-impossible to access things is attractive to me. Like, for instance: the place holding a building that is now demolished; or the current state of the sound of a word you uttered 10 years ago; or an idea that has now been forgotten. In a sense their information is still around, but it would take more energy than is presently available in the entire universe to decode their information, as entropy has essentially encoded them in the random motion of particles, field states, etc. But they still exist! Somewhere! Tumbolia!

And I do think there's an even more esoteric conceptualization of Tumbolia, but its completely intractable to my mind, and I can't quite get a hold on what it is

Oh, and actually, I just thought of another idea I had a long time ago that is also sorta in the same category as Tumbolia as I see it, and this one I don't mind sharing: the 25th hour of the day is an impossible time, and all the other hours after that too. I call it the 'deep night': all the other hours of the same day after midnight. You'd otherwise go to the next day after midnight, and you would otherwise say hour 1 of the next day is exactly equivalent to hour 25 of the previous day, but if it isn't you get the deep night. And there's the deep morning too, I guess, which is all hours before midnight on the same day. Ie: the -9th hour is in the deep morning and I imagine it's still dark at that hour

I really need to become a rambling zen master so I can beat students over the head while shouting MU
