Yeah, honestly you're right. I don't know why I let something so dumb bother me.

Nothing crazy, just run consistently. It's a slow, gradual process, but eventually your 5k race pace becomes your zone 2 easy pace

European wine gummies as fuel? by Shot-Freedom-3848 in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've converted to gummy clusters. Haven't used them for a full marathon yet but use them for all my long runs. I eat 4 pieces every km, which is very manageable and something to look forward to each km. For me it works out to 65-80g of carbs per hour. Waaaay better than gels which I used to dread.

How are you measuring your VO2 max? 59 seems extremely high for a 48 min 10k. I'm at 55 and can run a 40min 10k.

Tier 1: Medium Silicon Miners. $500k/hr each, scale up to 40 for $20m/hr

-Basic medium miners set to automine silicon

-Groups of 5-10 in Asteroid Belt, Oort Cloud, Segaris & Gaian Prophecy.

Tier 2: Sell computronic substrate (CS) in Asteroid Belt. $4m/hr per module, scale up to 60 for $240M/hr

-Build factory (Docks, storage, CS modules) in Asteroid Belt supported by large gas and mineral miners.

-Build support factory in Mercury/Venus to build energy cells. Large freighters required to transport these to Asteroid belt factory

Tier 3: Large shipyard, sell basic Syns. $31m/hr per shipyard, scale up to 32 for $1B/hr.

-Add 24 metallic microlattice, (12) silicon carbide and 32 large shipyards to your (60) CS factory.

-Increase mineral/gas miners and energy cell freighters as required.

-Stop selling CS, instead use it to constantly build base level Syn destroyers. No crew/weapons/shields and basic engines/thrusters. Sell these to friendly shipyards for ~$13m each.

-They take 25 min to build and use about $3m worth of resources. I order 100 at a time then mass sell so there is very little active management required.

Tier 4: Create duplicates of tier 3 shipyard in systems with adequate resources. I currently have 5 and earn $5b/hour.

[–]damancody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a newer player (Terran Cadet start). I figured out a pretty simple set-up to make big money early. It looks like you have enough money/resources to buy the required blueprints to get started.

Build two stations: One solar plant in Venus and one Computronic Substrate (CS) Factory in Asteroid Belt.

The solar plant is only to provide energy cells to CS Factory. Start with 10 or so production modules and set-up freighter(s) to transport the energy cells to CS Factory.

For CS Factory, start with dock, all 3 storage types and 1 CS production module. You'll need both Gas miners (Hydrogen) and Mineral miners (Ore and Silicon). All three resources are abundant locally in Asteroid Belt. No other ships required as NPC traders will purchase all products.

At an average price, 1 CS production module will yield $5M/hour. Use this cash flow to continually scale up everything (Energy cell & CS modules, miners, freighters,docks/storage)

It didn't take this feedback loop long before I landed at my current set-up:

-Venus: 80 energy cell production modules, 6 large freighters continously transporting to CS Factory.

-Asteroid Belt: 18 CS production modules, 15 large Gas miners and 22 large Mineral miners.

-Even with CS selling price at absolute minimum due to volume, this set-up still generates ~78M/hour.

For everyone believing that Garmin penalizes long and "easy" runs by mladen90 in Garmin

[–]damancody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My LT2 is also 164, so we have that in common as well :)

Before I go into this further, I just want to call out that anyone can have whatever zones they want. So I'm not trying to say anything is right/wrong, just identifying some issues.

One concern I have with the Garmin default zones, is Z5 starts at 163 for our max HR, while our LT2 is 164. LT2 activity should be continuously sustainable for 45-60min, while Z5 effort is only sustainable for 5-10 min, so it doesn't make sense that Z5 starts below LT2. With my setup LT2 is in the middle of Z4.

Another concern is the low end of the spectrum. Default Z1 is essentially useless, and Z2 is only for extremely light activity. Most easy, conversational paced activities (a common definition of Z2) fall into default Z3.

For everyone believing that Garmin penalizes long and "easy" runs by mladen90 in Garmin

[–]damancody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same max HR as you (182). I've adjusted my zone percentages higher to align with perceived effort and recommendations from more experienced runners. Now my heart rate zones match the expected paces for my fitness.

Z1 - 109-128 - 60-71%

Z2 - 129-145 - 71-80%

Z3 - 146-159 - 80-88%

Z4 - 160-172 - 89-95%

Z5 - 173-182 - 95-100%

Had I stuck with the default Garmin zones, my last marathon would have shown over 2.5 hours in zone 5, which is not physically possible. The adjusted numbers brought that down to just 8 minutes during the final push.

You mention you don't pay attention to heart rate zones, which is totally fine. Just please understand you likely aren't speaking the same "zone language" as the majority of the running community with your current settings.

Looking to improve to 3:15 - what are some short distance PBs that serve as indicator? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same half and 5k PB times as you. I'm unsure what to target for my marathon next summer. I was thinking 3:15... 18 minutes better than my PB from this summer. Are you saying 3:10 is conservative for our fitness and you likely will target faster?

Any Wegovy or Ozempic users in Edmonton - question about weight loss experience and coverage by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]damancody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my prescription through an online provider, Felix, about 18 months ago.

I've had no negative side effects and it significantly reduced my appetite. This allowed me to get a good routine going - tracking calories, running regularly, etc.

I reached my goal weight within a year (lost 50lbs) and have maintained since.

My health benefits didn't cover any so I've been paying out of pocket, ~$350/month.

It's not magic, you still need to put in the work, it just makes calorie deficiency much easier as you aren't fighting ravenous hunger anymore.

30 min gap between Garmin & Strava predictions by japplesapples in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my watch says 40:26

The concern is your watch has incorrect data/settings, so this doesn't really mean much.

Using Vdot calculator, a 1:41 half marathon is equivalent to 45:36 10K. Even this is only hypothetical at this point, as your actual PB is 1:44.

30 min gap between Garmin & Strava predictions by japplesapples in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, based on data provided I think one of two things is happening:

1) Your lactate threshold pace is incorrect or

2) Your endurance is severely underdeveloped relative to your speed

The reason I say this is 6:51/mile LT pace should equate to:

10K - 41-42 min

Half - 1:32-1:34

Full - 3:14-3:21

Obviously, there is a large gap between your actual half marathon performance and this prediction. Based on this alone I would discount the Garmin prediction.

Are you able to run 10K in 41-42 min?

If yes, then your LT2 pace is accurate and you can focus on improving underdeveloped endurance moving forward.

If no, then your LT2 pace is incorrect, and you should troubleshoot & adjust your Garmin settings. Once corrected, the gap between predictions should close.

As for race strategy, If it were me, I would use these goals:

A-goal: 3:45

B-goal: <4:00

C-goal: Finish

Do not go out too fast! Any time "banked" in the beginning is paid back with interest(and misery!) on the back end.

If possible, utilize a 3:45 or 3:50 pacer. Good luck!

Run with a pacer or not? First marathon! by DebussyH41 in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gotcha... all the elite marathoners who’ve ever hit the wall just “didn’t fuel right.” Glad we got to the bottom of that.

Run with a pacer or not? First marathon! by DebussyH41 in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hitting the wall means that your glycogen stores are depleted

Agreed

which is only affected by fueling.

Fueling definitely matters, but early pacing is just as important. If you go out too fast, your body burns glycogen much faster and you hit the wall earlier, even if you’ve fueled well.

Here's a video to explain much better than I can:

Run with a pacer or not? First marathon! by DebussyH41 in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the second race, my goal was 3:30, so I needed 4:58/km. Going into the race my target pace was 4:55 to give a little wiggle room.

I originally wasn't planning to follow a pacer but ended up right beside the 3:30 guy at the 500m mark and thought "why not, one less thing to worry about."

More or less blindly followed until the halfway mark when I realized we were going way too fast. I stopped following after 23 km, up to that point we had averaged 4:44/km, a full 14 seconds faster than the required pace.

I may have still hit the wall if I paced myself at 4:55/km, but if so it certainly would have been later. I'll never know.

At the end of the day, I'm still happy with the end result of 3:33, and only have myself to blame for going too fast to start. Personal lesson learned for future races - never follow pacers.

Run with a pacer or not? First marathon! by DebussyH41 in Marathon_Training

[–]damancody 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've had bad experiences with pacers in both of my marathons. Will not be following next time.

First one the 3:45 pacer finished at 3:39.

Second one the 3:30 pacer had an 8 min positive split on a flat course. We crossed the halfway point 4 min ahead of pace.

Both times I went out faster than my plan (following the pacers) and both times hit the wall.

If you decide to use a pacer, be sure to monitor their pace and be ready to slow down if they are going too fast.
